    Be sure to dircharge caps before measuring with any meter.
    Larger caps can damage meters, especially cheap ones.

    I thought a major upside of ESR meters was that you could measure capacitors IN CIRCUIT no ? A lot of hassle tracking down a blown cap if you have to yank em to test em. ?

    Great tutorial. You can also test the resistance and microhenries of the inductors with the esr meter. The reactance formula is 2𝛑FL. That would be 2 x Pi x frequency of esr meter x 100 (uH) Just plug it in.
    R=0.628 X L(uH)
    L(uH)=R(ohms)/0.628

    Hope I don’t look picky, but just a couple of points that would improve a future iteration of this presentation:
    1) If you see figures the right way up, then roll your hands over to point the component to the camera, we will see the figures up side down;
    2) I wanted to see the screen of the ESR Meter, when it was displaying each of the two results & also a clear shot of the table on the ESR Meter. A steady shot of each of those would be appreciated.

    Hi, I'm an amateur in the field of Electronics, on your recommendation I have exactly the same ESR meter it works fine but I still have a question, can you also measure SMD Capacitors with this meter or do I need a Pin measuring device for SMD components. I ask this because the SMD capacitors do not have mF ( fahrads) written on them, sometimes only Numbers. greetings from the Netherlands Akko

    Hi
    I need your help.
    I have checked the capacitors on my digital piano and got the following results in ESR levels. I used the peak ATLAS ESR70 gold.
    10000 uF 25V - ESR 0.01 ohm
    2200 uF 25V - ESR 0.02 ohm
    470 uF 10V - ESR 0.20 ohm
    100 uF 25V - ESR 0.43 ohm
    47 uF 16V - ESR 0.64 ohm
    10 uF 16V - ESR 1.01 ohm
    1 uF 50V - ESR 1.10 ohm
    I am especially suspicious about ther results for 10 micro and 1 micro F. They should be around 8 and 5 respectively. Do these results mean that I need to change the 10 micro and 1 micro D capacitors?
    Thanks for your replies.
    Tan

    A good ESR meter like the one designed by BOB Parker is good to use for in cct capacitor tests. I have made a lot of money using this type. It's the first ESR meter that come out and only comes in kit form. The meter you are using is a copy of bob parkers one!!

    If the ESR meter is measuring resistance why can’t one use the DMM to also read a capacitor’s resistance and then use the same chart that’s on an ESR meter to determine if the cap is good?

      @@ortzinator Yes I think that's where I remember reading about the advantage of an ESR meter. On the other hand a multimeter can't, because parallel capacitance is additive.

    I'm new to this and I have a couple of tv's I want to try and fix, one has a problem with the picture taking a while to come on and one of the capacitors on the power supply board doesn't have a bulge but it does have a black mark on top. I heard that means it's leaking, I want to replace it and I was wondering if there are good and bad electronic component brands or are they all basically the same quality.

    Question: I'm working on a mid 60's Electrohome that needs power filterCaps "Humming"
    ( + other value caps needed)
    Filter Cap is a two part can with 4000 & 1000 mfd @ 50V sections. (C111 on schematic)
    Where might I Find a 4000 mfd 50v Cap for that part of the filter?
    (I do see 1000 mfd 50v available)
    and others needed are, 80mfd @ 25v I cannot find.
    (there's probably other values when I come across them to replace, that are not to be found online)
    Any suggestions for substitute values available that will work?

    Hi! I have a Sony Bravia smart TV and I'd like to fix it myself. The problem is that the TV automatically turns ON when I plug the cabel and the Sony logo shows up, than after some sec. it turns black (with light, so not OFF), and 1-2 sec. later the black light fade a little bit and it stays. The TV does not work with the ON/OFF switch and reset does not work either. Can you please help me? Any ideas, what the problem is and what should I do? Thanks a lot!

    • @overnightdelivery
      @overnightdelivery 2 года назад +2

      Super late reply. I'm sure you've moved on. But just for others information, that's definitely a Transistor problem. It's a pitchfork-looking component that is supposed to only power the TV when a switch is pushed. But it's stuck in an always on position. Probably re-soldering it would fix it unless it needs to be replaced.

    If your ESR meter is reading in Ohms, why cant I do the same with my ohm meter in circuit?

    • @somebodyx
      @somebodyx 2 года назад +2

      A typical Ohm meter measures DC resistance. Capacitors pass AC but block DC. An ESR meter actually measures AC resistance (impedance). In this case by applying a 100kHz sinewave test signal. The reason for high frequency is to go beyond the main influence range of capacitive impedance in electrolytics so the only thing left to measure is the ESR.

      I am just guessing but it may be possible to have a DMM measure cap that is within 10% of nominal but it's resistance is above the threshold so it is still eligible for replacement. But one wouldn't know this until it's tested with a ESR meter
