Lea's very smart. At a very young age she new the accent would somehow help her land the role in a UK production. Remember she auditioned with this accent and she pulled it off and they chose her among thousands of aspirants in a worldwide search for Kim. In London, she won the Sir Laurence Olivier Award and would probably have had a brilliant career at West End but the creators of Miss Saigon new she was so talented that they had to bring her to NY as well for the Broadway production of the show where she later won a Tony. She also helped pave the way for other Asians to be considered for non-Asian parts having won critical acclaim as Eponine and later as Fantine in Les Miserables. Meanwhile a few of her untalented countrymen like you see here in the comments section (most likely bitter fans of some mediocre local female "stars") who have never achieved anything noteworthy in their lives continue to bash her about her British accent. Lea has made her country proud by winning the Grand Slam in theater and became a celebrated Disney Princess. She continues to make her country proud and is guaranteed to become a National Artist one day. Still, haters are gonna hate.
She landed the role because of her voice and interpretation. During her audition she used her natural accent which is American since she was trained by Repertory Philippines with theater artists using the American accent. Plus, her mother trained her to use English as her first language in the Philippines even though the mother, Ligaya, cannot speak English with the native-like accent of Lea. She used the British accent in this interview because she wanted to blend in since she can switch accents having the ear for it just like some artists who also have the ear for different accents.
actually, as a MATTER OF FACT, when the 19 year old Lea stepped into the audition, she handed a copy of something to a guy and ask for his autograph in a VERY THICK BRITISH ACCENT.
@@eduardochavacano Nope it was not a very thick British accent. However, when she was interviewed in London she switched to a British accent. Lea Salonga is a Filipino GenXer like me and I actually know her family history (today's generation thought she came from a rich family because of her English fluency, but they did not know her struggles as the daughter of a man who already had another family then). My sis was a big fan of Lea who was not appreciated by our fellow GenXers because she was seen as snooty then just like most of her fellow artists in Repertory Philippines for staging Western plays and musicals. She got accustomed to the British accent when she was in London; hence, she used it to blend in with the natives LOL. She actually admitted it in an interview because many Filipinos then criticized her for using the British accent when in the Philippines everyone knew her accent was and still is American since the Philippines was colonized by Americans. My sister became a journalist and was able to interview Lea Salonga in person.
He wasn't downplaying her but trying hard not to patronise her. She's so young and also back then, it was surprising to see a non-white person in such a role. It's not long ago in some ways but in others it is.
Lea's greatest talent is her Diction! She is Asian but she commands the English language better than the average native speaker of English. Anyone can hit the high notes. But only Lea can make it sound like she is just Talking and with the charm of a western accent.
There are numerous countries in Asia where in there are fluent English speakers with amazing grammar. I mean, I'm a Filipino and I'm in 8th grade and I'm completely fluent in English ever since I was in 3rd grade. Ergh, Filipinos are versatile just like that. When I'm in Wellington, I speak with a slight Kiwi accent. When I'm in the Philippines, I speak with an American accent. It's just one of those things... :)
I agree. It's an adaptation thing. I live in the U.S. and I'm Filipino and I've friends from other countries who after spending years here drop their accent when they speak English and don't realize it. When you assimilate into another culture, you tend to pick up linguistics and dialects through social interaction. For an outsider it can be surprising but it has a charming appeal to it to shock people. LOL.
@@queenofswords4499 Many OFWs cannot lose their provincial accents despite being abroad for a long time. It is a talent to use different accents since even Western artists do not have this ear for accents so not all can do different accents unlike Gary Oldman or Daniel Day Lewis. Lea has the same innate talent.
I worked for the British embassy, working in an environment were most of your co workers are British, I never felt the need to change my accent. It felt weird speaking in an accent I wasn't used to. Well to each their own, no hate.

I couldn't comment more on how excellent she is as a singer because without a single doubt that she really is an excellent singer. "When in Rome (do as the Romans do)" that's basically what Lea Salonga-Chien did on this interview. Same thing with her Christmas video message when she was doing "Miss Saigon" in London. Lea, UNlike most of the artist in the Philippines, has constantly set her foot on the ground and never fails to remember her roots. Lea has remained true to herself and never cease to make all Filipinos in the world prouder.

Maybe just me...
Anyone watching this video in August 2019? 😍 Sobrang ganda at witty ni Ms. Lea dito. No doubt who is she now. Amazing.
Every time I have a job interview I watch this video first so I can copy the accent and fluency. hehe Thanks Lea :)
Ms. Lea never gets old. She's still beautiful and talented until now
Ergh, Filipinos are versatile just like that.
LOL.
Essen Vicente btw the british accent is kinda weird...just speak the way you speak....
Yuni Aniceto yeah well she did stay in London for quite a while. sometimes you just adapt to the accent 😊
So PROUD OF YOU MS.LEA, YOU'RE A REAL GEM IN OUR COUNTRY. ONE OF THE PH PRIDES.
LOVE IT
It’s 2019😄, I love Lea❤️She’s a gift to the Filipinos. I will never get tired of watching her. Oozing with talents and her brother too, Gerard Salonga
damn! the smiles, her eyes, her dimples, her accents and her simplicity kills me and fall for her easily. what a lovely woman!
I like her smile 😊still watching💜
ang ganda nya
Her mannerism never changed.. The way she talks and how she emphasizes words with hand gestures.. No matter where she is.. Be it Philippines or any other country, Lea is still Lea.. She just copes with environment so naturally.. She knows what to to do at a young age! Wow.. I look up to her a lot
Beautiful Lea. 2019 and watching this❤️
Kung diko lang kilala si Lea Salonga, pagkakamalan ko talaga syang foreigner haha graveee starstruck pa rin ako sakanya 😍
WOW! Lea Salongga got BARS when she speaks! haha. Talks so fast, with the UK accent, and the voice is fire
I couldn't comment more on how excellent she is as a singer because without a single doubt that she really is an excellent singer. I love watching this interview because her reactions are same reactions on her interviews now; funny, poised and smart. Yes, the accent has changed. She is speaking in a notably neutral accent now but still very well-versed. I think she was trying to speak in British accent here. I dunno but I think so. :) Lea, there can't be another you!
This is what we called in my previous company as "Neutral Accent" the perfect accent to use for public speaking in my opinion..Truly Lea has become one of the great icon for musical & theater arts!
So innocent. That made her playing the role as Kim very special. Her graciousness and immense singing and acting talent raised the bar. NO one can surpass her. Her costar Simon Bowman was excellent too. I'm sure he fell in love with her too. But it was just acting but they were fantastic together as she was with all the other Chris's. Excellent chemistry. What's not to love about this beautiful innocent Kim(Lea). Beautiful and Unforgettable, MISS SAIGON.
This is the most adorable thing I ever saw. How beautiful she was, the way she spoke. I'm in love with a girl of 1989. Silly me.
she is brilliant and that's the only thing that should matter.
Such a beautiful smile. I have heard her sing and she's so incredibly talented.
I lover her accent and her way of speaking tho
Goosebumps and Chills! Amazing Performance indeed Ms. Lea Salonga. Philippines Pride!
🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
No make-up and very simple yet she capture the audience because of her being real and very inteligent answers throughout the interview. Your the best Ms. Lea Salonga❤️God bless💕❤️💕
she stayed here and Philippines going back and forth when she was little, her family is one of some wealthy one back home.
Loooove u LEA...your sooooo amazing😘
The 1st time I saw lea on stage was in Araneta colleseum during the sanreo production in 1982 I was 8 and she was 10 I think. Shes very talented and wity.
I think she's a VERY TALENTED performer who speaks VERY GOOD English and she does the Philippines proud!
I was born this year. 1989 😲 she is really amazing back then and now. Wow!
Lady of Passion Beauty Intelligent and Impressive Personality salute to you Miss Lea Salonga😊🙏❤🇵🇭
