I love that Isabella and Luisa have the exact same song, played to the opposite side of the coin. Luisa spends her whole song talking about what the pressure and expectations have done to her mental and emotional stability, with a short break about how nice it would be to drop it all and take a break. But Isabella's song is mostly about how exciting the possibilities of breaking free are, with a short break to talk about how unhappy she is. They both do something really well, and they're both so, so tired of it.

I agree 100%. I love that there is this common through-line in all three sisters' songs about what's happening under the surface. Isabella is singing about seeing there is more to her than her looks and this perfect persona. Louisa is singing about seeing that she is stressed and need some time to relax period and Maribel is singing about if you look under that surface-level you'll see she is not fine with how her family treats her she just wants them to accept her and include her.

In “All of You”, they switch their motifs in their moments during the rebuilding. It’s also when they sing about being themselves (Luisa wants to be herself and be able to express her insecurities; Isabela also wants to be herself, and be a botanist, and get her hands dirty)

Talking about Bruno, and his prophecy; one of the coolest parts of "We don't talk about Bruno" is when you realize why Isabella's part of the song is there. At first it is being framed as if she is just spoiled, since that's how Mirabel sees her. The reason she is complaining with the rest of the town though, is because Bruno promised she would have the life of her dreams; but instead she is miserable, and about to marry a man she doesn't love. It completely reframes her as a character, once you hear this song, and go back to listen to the others.

I really like Isabella's line of "how far do these roots go down" because as i watched the movie more it felt like a question that she's asking herself. To me, it was like she was asking herself "how long have i felt like this?" In relation to how she felt trapped into fitting the picture of what everyone saw her to be. It really drove home to me that the family needed to heal, because it wasn't just luisa that felt that way. She felt that she needed to be perfect in every way and , probably unknowingly, putting her wants and true feelings aside to make the people around her (especially abuela) happy, even though she (and luisa in her song) felt hurt and pressured on the inside.

I’m so glad to see someone else point out this line. It gets overtaken by Mirabel’s part there but I feel like it’s actually a part of the core of the movie itself.
“How far do these roots go down?”
How long has she felt to big for the “perfect” mold she’s been forced into? How long has this been a problem within the family? How long has she, and all her family, been holding back?

i LOVE how her vocal style changes, between songs and within this song. She starts with a very Disney Princess-Or-Ingénue voice, on the more choral and breathy side. And as the song progresses, she goes more loud, more full, more bright, and with that last ‘do’ just BELTING it. It’s such a great way to mirror how she’s breaking out of expectations to be more genuine.

one thing I always thought was really well portrayed is how different Mirabel and Isabela's struggles are. they are quite literally on two opposite ends of the spectrum. Mirabel is shunned by her family and deemed as useless when she isn't, and Isabela is constantly praised by her family and deemed as perfect, when she isn't! this happens a lot in sibling relationships. where completely different personalities will clash and they will undermine one another because of some sort of misconception they have of each other. and the best part, BOTH of them take the blame! neither of their issues are portrayed as more important than the other and they are both allowed to show their grivances and take responsiblity for their actions. its very easy to have a bias and take either side but its important to understand why the conflict is there in the first place and try to fix it.

The show has a lot of depth to it. This song really shows something about the magic in how each ability is matched to its character.
I think one of the elements of what ability each person has is actually born from the type of person they are. Here, Isabella shows that instead of being the perfect girl, she's actually the free spirited artist. Imagine loving art and being force to make repetitive commercial art? That's basically what Isabella's life became after getting her gift. She was forced to only grow they same thing over and over again because it was pleasing to others. She did this so much that she never realized she even had the potential to do more.
The journey she takes in this song reflects so many artists journey as they explore various mediums such as colored pencils, pastels, inks, paints, carving, etc. I think by the end she was getting to her charcoal phase, lol. More seemed to be on her than the surface she was working on.

She is the one that looks most like her Abuela as well they have the same complexion and they are the only people in the family with straight hair! It's the saddest thing ever because she doesn't even know what she wants, she knows what she doesn't want but not what she really wants! Like Bruno wants to be helpful to the family and he loves them and Luisa wants a break to relax but Isa we don't know what she wants she never even thought about what she wants because she has been expected to do what ever her Abuela says since she got her gift! Mirabel's part in this song is a perfect mirroring to Isabella's part in We Don't Talk About Bruno. It's the same calmness, the same rythm, and a few words are the exact same.
I find it to be perfect.

This music was my favorite, i was sometimes thinking that, "should i be a little bit perfect?" For some reasons, but when i hear this song, i always smile, and i will always keep this message in mind, "let me be" "be yourself" "you dont have to be perfect to be loved" i love those.

I wonder if Luisa felt her power coming back a little when he said they strengthened the candle when they came together… cause technically speaking, the candle was getting weak so Luisa’s powers were weak, BUT, maybe when Isabela and Mirabel made the candle burn brighter, her powers came back but just for a little bit? Idk it’s just a theory…

In 8:18 when Mirabel sings, her melody is similar to Isabela's singing part in the song "Family Madrigal". I think that represents her starting to understand and connect with her sister as she starts to realize what she is actually going through.

There's a really nifty detail here. When Mirabel starts singing about how she never realized what Isabela's life was actually like, she uses the same melody Isabela uses for her part in We Don't Talk About Bruno, simbolizing the fact that Mirabel is now progressing from only being able to see her sister's façade that she put on for the sake of the family and especially Abuela, the façade represented in that "angelical" segment of Isabela's in We Don't Talk About Bruno, to seeing her sister for who she is, thus matching her current song properly.
The sheer detail and complexity in Lin-Manuel Miranda's composition style, good grief. Layers for days.

The part when she says it's beautiful and mine, I think eludes to how she always gives beautiful flowers for everyone else. And what she finds beautiful is not what everyone expects from her. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I’ve watched this movie countless times cuz of my 3 year old. And one thing I noticed, is the sisters making up is only part of saving the candle and Bruno’s vision. Because who looks like Izzy as a child? The Grandma as shown in the flashback near the end of the video

So beautiful ^^

I've watched this clip and your reaction to this song several times, and I just noticed something. Whenever we see Isabella, she is often on a swing, or on her canopy bed, with more swing action. But if you pay attention, she is holding onto the vines of her swing (or bed) like prison bars. It's symbolic of her feeling of being caged by the expectations of graceful perfection.
It's another level of layers that I JUST noticed.

Btw there is also some sub contexts if you look up all the plants she talks about
    example
Sundew : surprise because nothing is what it appears
    This means a few things
    1. she learned her power is more then just pretty flowers
    2. She wants to bring something more then what they expect from her
The cactus at the start: endurance and strength
This means she has been powering though this and endurance
