I'll be honest, I think it wasn't so much voice acting that was to blame here. Alison Court did a great job (especially during the scene were Steve dies) and Chris had some good delivery. I think the real culprit is the writing.........and Steve's voice actor.

    • @SSJdavey

I'm almost done with my first playthrough, and all in all I was heavily enjoying it until I switched to Chris for the first time and wasn't prepared whatsoever. Then later the game switches again, and then for the first encounter with the final boss my Chris only had a pistol. How was I supposed to prepare myself for any of that without a guide?
I'm about to be at the final boss but man I hate how much my enjoyment of the game went down because I was constantly worried I wasn't leavign the right weapons for the other character.
The first half with Claire is honestly my favorite part of the game. Almost zero problems with it. It's just the character switching that turned me off super hard.

6:10 The game looks far better on the Dreamcast than on PS2,PS3 HD. And the graphics were sort of amazing for a time when others were still on the PS1.
I bought this on release date for thw Dreamcast and even then when the game was new and impressive for the time it was clear that pre-rendered backgrounds would have been even better. But this did give the game unique character of it's own and it still an awesome game to play as long as it's the Dreamcast version.

The frame rate issues on PAL make the game run 16% slower, getting A-Rank on the battle missions almost impossible because of this. If you're someone who wants the platinum trophy, you need to make a US account and download the US version of the game to get that sweet 60FPS... pretty ridiculous Capcom!

I consider item management most compelling element of CV and RE1. You collect items with no apparent usage, drop them in item box and then while exploring you figure out what to do with them. And yeah, you can really screw yourself up with character switching. You need to know when this happens. If you deposit all of your weapons before first Nosferatu fight you'll have Chris armed to the teeth during his part and have no problems at all dealing with all the enemies.

    • @SSJdavey
      @SSJdavey  3 года назад

RE1 does a better job of steering you with its items than CV does imo, there's occasions where you grab an item and have 0 idea what it's for (wolf and Eagle medallion for instance) but generally most items are telegraphed earlier.
The more time that's gone on since I wrote this review the more fond of CV I'm becoming. After I have reviews for all the mainline series done (on the run up to 8) I'll get to a tier list at some point... it'll be hard placing CV

Will contain spoilers... (in case anyone cares).
A very interesting game. But for me it has some pretty big problems. The first being what you touched upon regarding item management, puzzles and switching characters. I think this problem extends further through the game. When me and a friend played it (very much not veterans of the series), it felt like we were punished for simply visiting locations out of order and taking too much damage as a result (this also in a game where sections have respawning enemies). I think this was greatly exacerbated by the lack of an "easy" option on the PAL version. I agree with your general points about planning as a crucial gameplay element. As a result, the difficulty simply feels unfair if you feel like you're punished for blamelessly making the wrong decision. We always kept multiple saves and had to go back on hours of progress on a few occasions.
This ties into a point that I believe Josh Strife Hayes made when discussing Amnesia, horror becomes less effective when dread is replaced by frustration. Code Veronica has a bad tendency to drift into the latter category.
Though as a positive... I thought the metal detector section was an excellent mechanic for creating dread in the player. Just knowing that at some point it would make you defenseless in the presence of enemies.
The storytelling is also just a bit iffy. The locations were good but the plane to the Antarctic felt a little contrived, and I thought it slightly hindered what could've been a more claustrophobic feel. The Matrix-esque scenes with Claire really jar with her controlling like a tank in gameplay (not exactly ludonarrative dissonance but the effect is something adjacent to it). And the cutscene with Wesker at the end of the game just felt odd and anticlimactic. It didn't feel much like an ending scene. Comical and dragged on a little too long.

    • @SSJdavey
      @SSJdavey  2 года назад +1

Thats totally fair criticism, I can see why it would become punishing/frustrating especially if someone is newer to the series - CV is the one entry I see the most complaints with its difficulty and I can see why

    • @daniilslavandrushevych4118
      @daniilslavandrushevych4118 2 года назад

@@SSJdavey Some pretty brutal enemy designs too (mainly thinking the bandersnatches). Again, on the point of frustration, new encounters began to induce more sighs of frustration than any sort of fright. I've heard that (counterintuitively) the knife is actually a good option as a weapon in CV. We never really made use of it, though.
I've heard a fair amount of frustration expressed towards unfair difficulty in Zero, mainly pertaining to the eliminators.
To expand a little on the point of item placement (in terms of getting puzzle items before you have idea what they're for), I can't help thinking there is also something quite immersion breaking about this. Almost as if it breaks the illusion that the player is in control, since you watch your character pick up items that you see no real reason to pick up.
For the criticism, I actually enjoyed CV a lot more than RE4. I just don't think RE4 feels as refined as people make out. The occasional horror and (incredibly easy) item puzzles almost feel as of they're there to pay homage to the older games rather than serving any real purpose.

That part where Steve had to shoot his zombified dad to save Claire is something that really bothers me. How in the world did a single bullet from a fully-automatic firearm NOT hit Claire? She was clearly in Steve’s line of sight and a single bullet did not even tear through the zombie flesh and pierce Claire when she’s clearly in the line of fire. BRUH.

As someone who only played through Code Veronica’s campaign once and did a few rounds of its Battle Game mode, I remember my opinion being very similar to The Sphere Hunter’s…
Gameplay-wise, it provided a lot of what I enjoyed about classic Resident Evil, packaged in a noticeably higher difficulty. Some of the puzzles and enemy encounters gave me a harder time, in a good way. I also appreciate some of the attempts to introduce new elements, such as the fully 3D environments, dynamic camera movement, and how scoped weapons are aimed. Incidentally, those elements felt like a precursor to RE4’s camera/movement/aiming system, and I found it surreal to play the Battle Game in first-person.
However, my two most notable drawbacks were the boss fights and how item availability works, in ways that can screw players over through no fault of their own. A large chunk of the bosses encounters felt lackluster or derivative, with the Gulp Worm and giant black widow feeling like repeats of the Gravedigger(s) and Black Tiger, the Adult Albinoid being such an easy/skippable boss, the mutated Steve’s encounter being one quick run, plus Alexia’s second form being awkward to fight. Besides the issues of inventory sharing between Chris/Claire, that box in front of the metal detector felt so “one-off” and out-of-place that I forgot it existed, until I realized I permanently left behind anti-B.O.W. gas rounds and the fire extinguisher needed to get the magnum. Not to mention, I heard Wesker’s level in the Battle Game can randomly give players a joke file, in place of the magnum, despite the fact that Wesker otherwise has no guns at all for him to even hurt his final opponent.
Story-wise, I mostly liked Code Veronica for a lot of the same reasons that others do, particularly Chris/Claire being together, the Ashford twins, the overall atmosphere, and Albert Wesker’s return. However, I agree about the general voice-acting and Steve Burnside’s portrayal, until Darkside Chronicles managed to fix him. The way Claire was able to learn Chris’ location on Umbrella’s island and even have Leon contact him, so he is now looking for her after she was looking for him, felt a bit too convenient.
But the story element I have the most to say about is the seemingly arbitrary nature of the Veronica Virus, at various points. Namely, they never seemed to explain why the Veronica Virus needs years of hibernation or a slowed infection rate to properly mutated its host, how Alexia Ashford knew that was the solution, plus why some of the Veronica mutants can bleed napalm. As far as I recall, the Veronica Virus was simply a combination of the Progenitor Virus, an ancient ant virus, and additional plant/arthropod genes. How did any of this require a unique period of hibernation or enable flammable blood? If not for how much I legitimately enjoyed the climax of Darkside Chronicles, with Manuela Hidalgo helping you with her own fire blood, I would have put Alexia’s blood attacks in a similar category as T-Rex Simmons from RE6, Morpheus Duvall having electromagnetic force field powers, Heisenberg controlling metal like Magneto, etc. On a more minor note, I think it might have been neater if the Bandersnatch enemies were products of the Veronica Virus.

I have played all RE1,2,3,Veronica,Remake, Zero games 20-40 times each and i never found Veronica difficult. And i've just played 1,2,3,Veronica, Remake on the last three weeks so they are fresh in my memory.
It has a million bullets, health and ink ribbons. You can just walk and shoot everything and the bosses aren't hard at all. It is harder than usual Normal difficulties but doesn't compare at all to games that have Hard modes. (The difficulty on Veronica is called Normal because in the Japanese version you could choose easier ones and the standard difficulty is called Normal)
What makes an RE game hard is when you don't have enough bullets or health and are in constant danger and with hard bosses.
The hardest RE games in my experience (top down)
Dreamcast/PC Resident Evil 2 on Nightmare difficulty:
This is 2-3 times more difficult than RE1 with Chris.
One zombie takes 18-23 bullets to kill and most of them they don't fall down when you shoot them so they just walk up to you and eat you. And you don't have enough bullets so you have to think of creative ways to clear sections and leave as many zombies alive that you can. I would say the difficulty is 10/10
      RE Zero on Hard:
Really makes you think about where you use bullets and it's easily possible to not have enough bullets at the end. (Compared to RE2 Nightmare 5/10)
RE Remake on the hardest difficulty without transferring item boxes:
Is somewhat difficult that sometimes i kill the snakes with the knife only because it's possible to run out of ammo. (4/10 difficulty)
RE1 with Chris (original, not directors cut or dual shock):
Gives some challenge and especially for people who are new to the series it can be really hard but not really because you are still left with a ton of bullets after the game finishes (3/10)
      RE3 on Hard:
There is sooo much ammo and herbs that you can play rambo and just kill everything so it isn't really that hard but the clocktower Nemesis and a few other moments give the illusion that it's hard but still you are pretty much a terminator in the game (2/10)
      Code Veronica:
You have endless ammunition, health and saves. Bosses are a walk in the park if you try out what weapon/ammo works on them. Zombies fall down really easily. Compared to like Re2 on Normal difficulty Veronica is much harder but compared to al other harder RE games and especially the RE2 on Nightmare as reference i would still rate this as 1/10
What makes people say Veronica is hard/the hardest is most likely that they normally don't choose Hard/Nightmare on other classic RE games and since Veronica doesn't offer a difficulty selections and it's Normal difficulty is higher than other Normal difficulties it makes it feel difficult but if we are talking about the hard modes RE titles Veronica is actually the easiest because it doesn't even have a Hard mode. Just a bit more difficult Normal.

    Things I don’t like:
    1. Tank controls
    2. Door animation times as long as 15 seconds in spots you may need to replay several times
    3. Saving a game in a position that makes it impossible to pass an area. I had to start over completely in the middle because I hadn’t managed resources correctly and it was impossible to pass the section with what I had. In some other similar situations I had to try repeatedly and get extremely lucky to get past a spot, usually having to wait for cutscenes to play or skip when retrying.
    4. Not realizing to share resources just prior to the final boss like you mentioned in the video
    5. Some of the voice acting

If you’re a diehard fan of RE, then yes it’s definitely worth checking out if you’ve never played it.
But in all honesty, in comparison with the original trilogy, this game has aged the worst, and that’s comparing a 6th gen title over 5th gen games.
One problem is that both Alexander Ashford & Steve Burnside are together the worst sidekick and villains that have EVER been in a RE title. They’re both beyond embarrassing.
The other problem I have is the backtracking. Unlike the previous games, backtracking in RE: CV is a genuine chore and feels more for padding than genuine game progression.
I actually played this game last year for the first time in 19 YEARS since 2001. I have no intention of playing it again, not even for nostalgia

Loved this game, and definitely anticipate a remake with the RE Engine. I first got intro'd to RE when RE2 came out for PS1. Absolutely loved it, played it over and over. I got RE3 and thought it was cool, but the story seemed shorter and overall less creepy so I was a bit disappointed. The indestructible Nemesis seemed like a cheap gimmick... Then I bought a SEGA Dreamcast and got RE: CV - absolutely thought is was real successor to RE2 in story and also in spirit.
I kinda fell of the map with RE after 4 came out, because it was here that the story pivoted away from survival horror, and started to get the action-crnetric gameplay. Also, the lore that was being built with Birken, Wesker, the Ashfords and umbrella kinda got lost. I think I really like the idea of following along in adventures with Chris, Claire, Leon, Ada and even Sherry in unravelling the dark conspiracies of the Umbrella corporation. and how its internal competing factions did various nasty things in the pursuit of controlling the recipes of the virus strains.
I tried the demo of RE7, and was not really interested. Didnt like the FP camera angle, and the silent levels made for a somewhat boring experience. It underscored how much a good soundtrack carries tension in these types of games. I guess I just wasnt that interested in Ethan finding his wife.. honestly the whole story seemed NOT resident evil had it not been for an appearance by Chris at the end. I really wanna keep tracking Leon, CLaire, Chris, Jill, Sherry and Ada. After seeing the clips of what RE8 is gonna be, I'll probably pass on that one too...
Anyways, a bit of a ramble. I got RE2 remake, and thought it was perfect. Id definitely love to see CV given an RE2Remake style makeover.

The 2 was my favourite ever the 3rd was sooo scary for me i never finished i couldnt jsut play it because of that Nemesis soo scaryy but still i liked the whole atmosphere though and Code Veronica wa slike rpettys cary as well i just got until the private ashford residence and that house was sooo scary i never played again until i was older just recently and I loved it, I lvoed the characters, the atmosphere, the places, the story was pretty nice too, i prefer way better this kind of voices than the soo dull and repetetive and simialr ones in the newer games at least these voices get some perosnality and passion even if for many soun ridiclous or exagerated i dont care i like them and the twin brothers were scar as hell specially Aldred dressing and speaking as his sister sooo psychoo anyways the magicof the PS1 never will come back again at leats some PS4 games are starting to be nice but I miss that huge creativity and memorable scenes and characters and stories and colorful things from the 90s was sooo perfect for my childhood reallyy :)

The story is rich, the environments and atmosphere is amazing and the soundtrack is just top-notch.
That being said, if you want to buy Code Veronica for PS4 , make sure you buy it off the US store instead of the EU store. Long story short, PAL is slower, making Battle game a nightmare due to the timer remaining at the same speed as the faster NTSC version. :)

@@SSJdavey I made the mistake of doing that as well. But I don't think we were both aware of it at first, since most games nowadays are the same regardless of region. It isn't *impossible* to beat the Battle Games, just *REALLY REALLY REALLY HARD*! Claire A requires you to be EXTREMELY precise with every move and Chris required you to use a glitch which got Alexia stuck so you can kill her without her moving. Claire B and Steve wasn't bad since both required around 8 and 9 minutes respectively to finish, while Wesker was the easiest since you got an A just by completing it.
I left guides on my channel on how to complete them with tips in the subtitles if anyone needed help since I know how difficult they are and I didn't want anyone to yeet their controller like I did a couple times. Feel free to have a look if you ever want to get back into them 😂😂😊😊

I couldn’t use my 45 Grenades on the final boss because the grenade launcher was in Clair’s inventory, and because of the multiple switches at one point with no access to a box for Chris, I got to fight stage one Alicia with a knife and 7 handgun rounds. I would have reverted a save, but I had done that two other times in the game already. There’s good stuff in this game, but a blind play through is just irritating and it’s one of my least favorite games in the series that I’ve played. For the time of the gamecube/ xbox / ps4 ports the resolution is very sub par. With some decisions that ignore what re1-4 has taught us as players . While, making baffling design choices that even for 2006 was awful. There was to many where the f--ks and where the f--ks situations . Even, for a re game that's really bad . Adding in the plathera of gameplay mechanics that can result in soft locks . Re CVX is a do not play. Just play the dark side chronicles version instead .

This game even in its day was garbage. Especially when compared to any other resident evil. Even the remaster suffers greatly from wasting the players time. If you don't believe me, try playing it without hoarding ammo (skip a few ammo boxes or kill enemies that you don't know that you don't have to kill.) and see if you have enough to finish the game... you will waste that playthrough and gave to start over due to it being literally impossible to continue at certain points in the game.

Is it holds up? Certainly, if you are a fan of classic style. Is it need remake, not too necessarily but you can improve it. Like better written Steve, changing the flow, giving more depth to side characters like Rodrigo. Can they do it? I doubt about that, considering how they ruined all characters in RE2 Remake.
Sorry but for that character changing part, you should blame yourself. The game obviviously hinted you are gonna play as Chris again. The game not let you save and take any key items in that part. At least you didn't left Chris completely defenceless, I saw one guy did that, infamous DSP and it is hilarious.

@@SSJdavey I can argue for this part because it is actually a good game design for technical side. I recomend you to watch this clip: ruclips.net/video/ri6yAbi4pbQ/видео.html
You can argue about difficulty of that part or necesserity (I personally like that for being genuinely emotional devolopment for Claire) but designers didn't screwed that for not giving you saving option. They thought every outcome and didn't make mistake.
The real deadly game breaker part is actually Tyrant fight before plane. I fell for that , wasted my anti BOW rounds during first encounter and Tyrant wrecked me on plane. Luckily I had a second save point. But I can't blame the game because as a RE veteran I should have know you have second encounter against Tyrant and plane fight is hardest fight in classic series. The thing about Code Veronica is it is designed for veteran RE players. Puzzles are difficult, game is more punishing and there is no easy mode option. Before CV I beat previous games on easy mode, this game teach me how to play RE and after that I beat previous titles on hard mode.

I remember playing this game for the Dreamcast when it first came out. Even back then I thought it was overrated and outdated! First of all, it had by far the FEWEST gameplay innovations compared to the Resident Evils that came before AND after it. How can anyone rank this above the original Nemesis, a game which introduced the dodge feature, pathway choices, and using staircases without button pressing? Code Veronica's contribution was firing two guns at once, but that hardly made a difference. They also took the limited moving camera from Dino Crisis, but so what? Instead we just get more of the same switch pressing, item collecting, box pushing, and BACKTRACKING across way too many areas, rooms, floors, hallways, and corridors. And the story? A silly linear one where we get crying heartthrob Steve, cross dressing Alfred, and cartoonishly superhuman Wesker. The character lineup was a joke. I haven't played a new Resident Evil in a while, but of all the classic style games Code Veronica still remains the worst and weakest of them all. The last time I gave it a playthrough was probably 10 years ago and I have no intention of revisiting it.

as a huge resident evil fan (of the games), Code Veronica seems like shit. I’ll be skipping it.
Btw, Third person is far above and beyond better than fixed camera. Tank controls suck too.

As you don't enjoy tank controls and fixed cameras it sounds like CV wouldn't be your cup of tea, at least now you won't waste your money 👍

I’ve have been a RE fan since young. This game is trash, remake outbreak

Out of the two I'd prefer an outbreak remake too

@@SSJdavey Veronica is to simple to do, outbreak remake would bring a whole different complexity to it. Picking a character that suits you. Who you save and who you don’t. A timeline on how slow you can take. I played it at maybe 12 yrs old so it was complex compared to others. But I think in this gaming world it would make it interesting for sure.

@@SSJdavey I missed the bowgun on the first try and had to start all over. I ran out of bullets everything last night. I don’t hate this game but the door shutting and closing off access to the bowgun is irritating

Oh no that's a nightmare! It's pretty unforgiving with locking access to things, I can understand the frustration
