Thank you. Exactly the use that should be made of this medium! This tone poem has the narrative detail of a ballet. I've not seen a CD that is tracked according to the narrative, but this is what one needs, and that's what's provided here.
James, I cannot thank you enough, for all your effort and talent in putting this together (I read the blog entry too). Dvorak's 5 tone poems are beautiful as music on their own, but the level of his genius can be appreciated so much more when understanding the meaning of the actual accompanying story. I doubt if you erred much from his actual intent, because his musical tale so brilliantly depicts the accompanying tale, that one can almost hear the music talking. One of the main reasons that I dislike most contemporary art and music is that they require the viewer or listener to imagine deep meanings that I simply do not see, as opposed to the great artists and composers of yore. Rembrandt and Matisse did not force you to look at what seems like a child's doodling and apply unseen deep meanings to it, just as Beethoven and Dvorak did not put together a succession of tuneless, cacophonous claps and screeches and force me to accept all the nonsensical interpretations that the NYT music critic will read into these so-called "classical music compositions." While I do not read music and only took a single Music 101 course in college, I've been a classical music fanatic for over 30 years and can sing most of the top concerti and symphonies by heart. THIS is music that I can understand! It is as simple and obvious as it is brilliant, magical and breathtakingly gorgeous. Thanks again.
What a wonderful annotation. I have listened to this piece of music for decades, but never really took the time to understand the themes / details. You have made it so entertaining and educational! Thank you!I am an artist. I hope one day soon I can make a cartoon with such wonderful annotations/captions for youngsters to approach classical music.
Thank you for doing this. I find the story of this one more difficult to navigate than the other Erben poems, maybe because of the sheer length. It’s very helpful to have an analysis to follow, and RUclips is perfect for it!
Thank u so much! I'm doing a visual interpretation for a orquestra presentation (OSBA-Orquestra Sinfônica da Bahia / Brazil) and this is helping a lot as I have to put all the imagery in its right place as the Orquestra performs live. Again, this is a life savior work! Thank you!
This is really great, thank you for all your research and the work that went into making this video! I discovered it while looking up pieces to play for my students on Halloween. This type of annotated score should be an industry standard! Awesome.
The annotation and highlighting of the score is accomplished. It reminds me of my music teacher. You remind me of my piano teacher. She would do an overview of a piece with me and it would support my legibility, comprehension, interpretation and the making of meaning of a music text. Thank you.
Loved the way you did this...please do more! Would you consider similar videos for the other 3 Dvorak tone poems taken from the Kytice??? Very good job on this...the great tone poems of Strauss and Sibelius would also benefit from this type of annotation...please keep up the good work and thank you!
Thanks for the kind words. I've been considering doing another one (currently thinking about Janáček's Taras Bulba) but as it takes me so long to do to make sure I get things right, it might be a while.
What a great piece!!!! Thank you so much for including the narration on the side. (as well as the sheet music, since I love to read along with music I listen to) Could you do this same thing maybe with some other instrumental works that are based on poems and stories, for instance, other Dvorak pieces; "The Water Goblin", "The Noon Witch", "The Wild Dove", ect.? This really helped put the piece in perspective and allowed me to understand it real well. Thank you so much for this. :-)
Thanks! I'm not sure if I'll do any more videos like this as I'm not a professional musician and this one took me a long time to put together, but if I do (I have some ideas!) I will probably create a separate RUclips channel for them, because in case you haven't noticed, my videos tend to be rather eclectic. If I do create such a channel, I will announce it here.
@@jtphil Hi James. It has been so long and I meant to comment back on this video. In regards to this music video on Dvorak's piece, all I have to say is... who cares if you aren't a professional!! You obviously know your stuff! :-) You obviously know music and have a great understanding of structure and the stories behind the music. I know you could do amazing content! :-) Again, I am so sorry it has been so long, but I was listening to this work again and I was reminded of you and this amazing video.
It's nice to have the annotations alongside, but difficult to read both. If you made the background darker, text lighter, and put it in the middle of the score it would be possible for anyone who wanted to. I also agree with annotating the other tone poems too, thanks.

26:30 is one of my favorite moments in music

I also sing orchestral music while I am listening to it.

James - a masterful pairing of the "poem" with the "tone"! Extremely well done. Thank you!

This is amazing! This format shld be followed by all orchestras arnd the world for tone poems!

Please, please please, can you make another "anotated" video for Vodnik/The Water Goblin Op. 107?
This splendor of words cannot attach it
I am satisfied with this footage

do you have the wild dove and water goblin annotated like this too? I'd love to see too
Sorry, no. I'd love to see those as well.
This is amazing! Thank you!
