Very true. The Kemper has been my go-to for a few years now and I still love it. My one gripe would be that Rig Manager is flakey, which is where I primarily spend my time.
I'm a long-time tube amp guy, was curious and wanted to try the Stage. A year into it and dozens of gigs later with the Stage, I sold all my Marshall Amps. Loving it, they really do have the tones nailed down in an 11 lbs package. There is a learning curve, but well worth it. Now i would like to see a Stage 2 with a larger color screen or even dual color screens!
I’m in love with my tube amps and also have a number of these digital alternatives. What I do like about my Kemper is it being a pretty good all in one compromise. Mine is powered, so having everything in a little unit that can be packed into a small rolling hardshell can be very convenient. Not having to pair it with a powered cab or anything is nice. I tend to go to it a good bit for certain applications.
I just bought a kemper and I’m blown away, the effects are amazing and the headphone options are really impressive too. Also low key had to learn what you were playing around 6:25- sounds awesome!!

I am VERY late to the party, but recently I picked up a power rack that belonged to The Ghost Inside and BMTH. I can confidently say, this is the best piece of gear I have used. It has easily replaced my pedal board, amps, everything. Recording is a breeze and having all my setups at the turn of a dial is very nice
I’m running a hybrid rig with the pod go and some analog pedals into a orange terror stamp or a amp in a pedal. In my opinion the sounds just keep getting better.
Just bought a Kemper a few months back and not regretting it at all! Like you said, I could buy a ton of amps or buy one that can give me very close tones of those amps. It was a solid choice and I highly recommend it!
Literally everything you said has been running around my head for ages! Even just looking at RUclips videos of professional musicians you see that most of them will have a Kemper. Only thing holding Kemper back, I would say, is a Hx Stomp style unit that would be both more accessible budget wise and could be incorporated into an existing pedalboard rig. Definitely think we’re gonna see a Kemper resurgence once that happens
Saying the Kemper is obsolete is like saying any tube head is obsolete. The Kemper was designed to replicate the look and ease of operating a traditional amp head. Why mess with that? And the only limitations to what it can sound like is based on the actual profiles you import into it. I have no plans on ditching my rack unit which I use for writing, rehearsing, and playing out.
Since Kemper sounds more like a recording, it sounds like the Fractal is better for live use if you want that amp in the room feel. We won't be playing thru a PA live, only the my guitar cabs. Maybe Helix as well.
I use Kemper since 2018 and the Kemper Kabinet since launch. I think it has the lead on the market. You did not mention it but the fact that Kemper makes the best Frfr on the market (the Kab, that works only with the Kemper Eq) is a big advantage. I'm mainly a strat player and I get my best tones with the Kemper and the Kab, mainly with The Amp Factory profiles (Tk Imperial, Bogner Gold Finger, Caroll Ann Od ... ) and some topjimis (64 Vibroverb is insane! Seriously what other modelers gives you the cranked vibroverb crazyness with speakers driven hard?). Really better that with my amps. Also I sold the Quad Cortex, that is lacking content compared to the Kemper that has 10 years of community and pro profiling, free updates etc etc. I profiled the princeton and the DR from the Quad Cortex that I liked the most, they sounded identical on the Kemper .... sold the QC! I love TAF profiles cause in some packs you have them equed for different guitars or for recording vs live settings (the way the amp was miced then equed, also it has some EQ blocs that are cool), this makes the Kemper really easy to fit your room or environment, that's not as simple with neural DSP (and again with the Quad and the Axe you won't find an Frfr that reacts to your playing as good as the Kab does). The KPA also has really nice options to tweak the amp: okay you can't change the real amp settings as well as with the QC or Axe (it's been profiled with a specific setting) but 1 : you don't need it if the profile makers made enought profiles, 2 : still it's not that bad for light tweaks, and 3: you have some settings that you don't have with other modelers: amp definition, tube settings etc ... that can even correct some of the amp imperfections. Everything feels really finished in the Kemper, even simple details as the "deep" parameter (enhanced headphones tone, actually I used in lightly withtout headphones with TAF profiles on 3), the double tracker effect, the pure cab option (to remove the mic coloration of the profile) give a real value, and you actually miss them when you switch to other modelers or .. an amp. Even boutique amps don't give me a better amp in the room sound than the Kemper + Kab. The last I sold was a Mercury V that failed the A/B versus TAF profiles ... With the last updates the effects are incredible. The vintage Fuzz really nails it, I get better sound out of it than with my vintage fuzz and octafuzz clones (sounds as good and you get more parameters). My next investment wont be an amp, but a 2nd powered Kab. Best piece of gear I bought in my life! Changed everything in my guitarist life!
I bought a powered kemper because I wanted to power a cab and the kemper was the only digital solution that offered this without buying a separate power unit. I love it, it's been very useful for sunday church service, practice and recording. One thing I don't like is that the profiler is as good as the profiles you have, you can find good free profiles but you will stumble with 100 bad ones before you find a good one. Also eq works different than in other modelers or amps, it's a doble edged sword in my opinion, the positive is that I found myself playing more and tweeking less because whenever I found a profile that works I just stuck with it and played, but if you are a tweeker and like to explore and change your tone I don't believe this is good. I somewhat disagree with the effects being great, reverb and delay do the job, they dont sound bad at all, but I feel line 6's effects sound way better, have more variety, and line 6 is miles away from kemper in the modulation effects. I haven't been able to find a decent tone with the kemper drive or the fuzz. If I need a drive sound I try to find it with another profile with more gain instead of using stomps. I also have an hx stomp that I bought with the intention to expand the fx on the kemper, I experimented with the amp modeler part and initially I did not like it, it took me a lot of effort to get a decent tone, but the more I use it, I started finding great tones, also if you're used to getting tones from an amp line 6 might feel more straight forward, in my opinion the kemper sounds more refined and more "mix ready" but the HX stomp has better tools to help you shape your tone, not to mention the form factor, I've been taking the hx stomp on a pedaltrain nano + with 2 or 3 pedals to complement and I've been having a lot of fun! In conclusion, I'm torned lol, I've been thinking of selling the kemper and relying on the HX stomp for all direct solutions, and buying a tube amp for those strange occasions when you can indulge, but I know I will miss the kemper if I sell it.
Hey David! Awesome feedback. I've thought about buying a little HX stomp too just for some variety. I personally love the Helix and Line 6's effects, modulation, reverbs, etc. I even enjoy the amp simulation but it's definitely different "feel" wise than the Kemper.
I am sure that you have seen the Tonex. Honestly I have been using the Tonex app through a set of powered monitors and it's as close to an amp as you can get. Now with that said I am using IKs Amplitube 5 for effects (which are about as good as it gets), and the results are noothing short of amazing. But I think the Tonex with the HX stomp into Harbinger V4115 you would be bullet proof. I can't brag enough on how much better the Tonex is than the Kemper. If Kemper had actually upgraded along the way, the Tonex quality would be Kemper 4.0 and the device is only $400, and the site has 1000s of killer free profiles on it already. :)
While the Kemper is great, this is where TH-U really excels, it is the best of both worlds. They have managed to (we all assume anyways) reverse engineer the RAW portion of the Kemper profile minus the effects via RigPlayer then use the built in effects of TH-U to finish out the patches. On top of that TH-U has 86 amps modeled as well that are all some of the best sounding, and best feeling modeled amps on the market, all for about $180 (when on sale). The RigPlayer has profiles from some of the biggest Kemper profile makers, featuring almost the entire Choptones and BHS libraries. Highly recommeded for anyone that cannot afford the Kemper to check out, and as someone that has had both sitting here, TH-U is my go to again because modeled amps, especially when blended with a profiled amp, blow the doors off anything else out there, and give you a dynamic depth that the Kemper could never deliver on it's own.
Anyone else think ducking is a game changer? Dry up tones with pick attack for tighter aggressive stuff and lush the up by lighting your pick attack? Also cleans them up at the same time.
I love the kemper I would like to own one maybe one day. The way I see it is which one is the easiest to get your hands on and where could you easily get a replacement at any guitar store in case of an emergency. I think they all sound good in there own way but the helix is the easiest to get your hands on it’s literally in every guitar store with a usb card and a update your back up and running in no time I also like to use a real amp so it also comes handy for just effects. That’s why I chose the helix over the rest.
Great video....concise and to the point...Just picked up a Kemper (non powered) with a foot switcher for a great price on Reverb...does exactly what I need it to...change rig settings on the fly with ZERO latency between rigs...I use a small EHX Magnum 44 for a power amp. Magnum fits in the gig bag, Kemper is light and easy to transport compared to a full sized tube amp head...sounded great on my first gig...quick question for you. You indicated the recent software upgrade allows for some better effects...what version of the software is the latest upgrade and how can I tell if the unit I picked up has that updated software on it? Thanks.

Yeah the Kemper is definitely old tech. True. However, so is a 1958 Tweed Fender Bassman, a 1965 Marshall Plexi or a 1959 Vox AC30. If something is *excellent*, it doesn't suddenly start being bad - unless you get hypnotized into believing so by the clever marketing of the latest gizmo.
That’s some excellent soloing there in some of those clips man! I really like that stuff! Sorry been on a little kick with this…but been stuck on listening to a lot of Elevation, Hillsong, Bethel and one’s that sound a lot alike…then I heard a black style gospel/praise song the other day and a few like it. Let me tell you their flavor of notes and chords is mind blowing and their solos over them! Not too mention as I was even more blown away with those guitar solos alone!! I was like where has this kind of guitar been all my life??!! I really admit the ambient sounds, delayed reverb, dotted 8th notes, etc… sounds very cookie cutter and is starting to get over played.
Thanks so much Jason! Gospel music is absolutely a blast to listen to. The complexity of the chords, melodies, bass lines, etc. all are so fantastic. I'd recommend checking out Travis Dykes or Kerry "2 smooth" as they have some awesome gospel stuff!
I just wish I could get the real tube feel you get from cranking a tube amp when you are standing in front of the cab. I don't like the idea of sounding like a recording. That's why I can't connect with one.
The morph feature on the Kemper does not exist on the Fractal or Quad Cortex products. For me, it's worth the price of admission alone. Plus over 17K free profiles available online, & all the superb profiles that you can buy. The Kemper forced all my other amps into retirement. Before the Kemper, I never thought digital could sound as good as tubes.
If anyone can point me to a video or even just some sort of website with a flowchart or something that shows how to use this more intuitively and instinctively and easily I would be overjoyed I just can’t seem to get my head around this I don’t need it for lots of lots of lots of authentic tones I just need it for a handful of sounds but can be DI convincingly it’s just there’s times when I plug in yet can’t get ANY sound down!? there’s even the times when a moved knob or pressed switch just don’t do anything… What’s the best way to Connected up when recording, even? I don’t need any reverb pedal affect time is it all just simple guitar tone Many thanks in advance anyone can help me with this because I pretty much agree with everything that’s stated in this video but just would love to be able to use it more
You are probably already using Rig Manager, but if not it was a game changer for me. I rarely use the menus, knobs or buttons on the Kemper itself. I just connect to my laptop and use Rig Manager instead. I find it way easier to get what I am looking for dialed in on the Kemper this way.

I say in my defence that I’m desperate for The whole “KEMPER experience“ to be As much like a normal AMP as possible and that’s why I shied away from the opening of laptops & the like (an iPhone version would be pretty amazing though…?) but I’ll give rig manager a try, as you say, but it be nice to be able to just reach down and twiddle a few knobs and it works, you know?
@@BeesWaxMinder when you say reach down I guess you have a Kemper Stage? If that is the case, you can use Rig Manager in your Iphone or Ipad as is. The Stage has a WiFi module that allows to connect wireless to your apple devices. If you don't have a Stage you still can connect the other models, but you need to have the Kemper connected to a router by cable because they don't have the WiFi module.

I don’t think it needs a new screen. They should just extend the iPad and iPhone apps and put them on a mic stand. Everything on the stage is perfect.

The ducking feature is a game changer for huge dotted 8th delay tones!
You can "turn off" the microphone inn the kemper i've learned

For someone needing redundancy in case of an issue the Helix is certainly the most easily replaceable!

I just wish I could get the real tube feel you get from cranking a tube amp when you are standing in front of the cab. I don't like the idea of sounding like a recording. That's why I can't connect with one.
If you gave me the option to have a room full of all the amps I've ever wanted but couldn't have my kemper stage... I'd pick my Kemper!!!

The morph feature on the Kemper does not exist on the Fractal or Quad Cortex products. For me, it's worth the price of admission alone. Plus over 17K free profiles available online, & all the superb profiles that you can buy. The Kemper forced all my other amps into retirement. Before the Kemper, I never thought digital could sound as good as tubes.
The Kemper really does do so much that other modelers can't. That Morph function is huge!

I just can’t seem to get my head around this
I don’t need it for lots of lots of lots of authentic tones I just need it for a handful of sounds but can be DI convincingly it’s just there’s times when I plug in yet can’t get ANY sound down!?
there’s even the times when a moved knob or pressed switch just don’t do anything…

You are probably already using Rig Manager, but if not it was a game changer for me. I rarely use the menus, knobs or buttons on the Kemper itself. I just connect to my laptop and use Rig Manager instead. I find it way easier to get what I am looking for dialed in on the Kemper this way.

Before you hit me (!) I say in my defence that I’m desperate for The whole “KEMPER experience“ to be As much like a normal AMP as possible and that’s why I shied away from the opening of laptops & the like (an iPhone version would be pretty amazing though…?)
but I’ll give rig manager a try, as you say, but it be nice to be able to just reach down and twiddle a few knobs and it works, you know?
@@BeesWaxMinder when you say reach down I guess you have a Kemper Stage? If that is the case, you can use Rig Manager in your Iphone or Ipad as is. The Stage has a WiFi module that allows to connect wireless to your apple devices. If you don't have a Stage you still can connect the other models, but you need to have the Kemper connected to a router by cable because they don't have the WiFi module.

Thanks for your help but it’s not the KEMPER stage it’s the “toaster“ looking thing but I mean just reach down like it was an amplifier’s controls on stage, you know?
