I’ve sea kayaked in Alaska and around active glaciers. It’s difficult to tell exactly how close they are to the front of the glacier but if the calving had happened right in front of them, the resulting wave could have easily tipped them over into freezing cold water. They were lucky.

This is the most predictable comment ever from an armchair critic. Anyone who knows anything about cameras, long lenses and perspective compression can tell you there were nowhere near as close as the photos make it look. Plus you would have noticed if you hadnt been so keen to share your 'wisdom' that the children were not in the shots where they were closer to the glacier.

These are not “prepared for anything” parents at all. They are actually quite astoundingly clueless. None of these people are dressed for cold water immersion, which requires dry-suits or thick neoprene. The water is probably in the low 30s. If one of these rubber bathtubs or all of them went over, the little ones and adults would probably suffer cold shock with insurmountable gasping filling their lungs with ice water if their heads were submerged. They at least had PFDs and would not immediately sink to the bottom immediately. They would have very limited time to organize themselves and their unconscious kids to get back into their rafts, which they likely never practiced before. Cold incapacitation would ensue and lead to swim failure and inability to get back into their little boats. Well meaning but clueless. Glad they and their kids survived their childhood.

@@adambane1719 You are incorrect to suggest that the people in the video, had any effect on that bit of ice falling, off the front. Inflatable small pack rafts, that can only be paddled at a maximum of 3mph, have no effect. They were also not shouting. However even if they were, the distance at which they are from the glacier, would have no effect on it. The foreshortening effect of the camera, makes them appear closer, than they were. They would need to be only metres away. A larger rigid hulled vessel, travelling at speed close to the glacial front, can have an effect, but not these vessels. I should know having spent a lot of time doing research at glaciers, in all kinds of vessels, from tiny packrats to 350ft ships.
It is important to separate what we intuitively and emotionally feel to be true, from actual measurable facts, on the ground. I.e. empirically and careful scientific analysis. You are right to be concerned, about glacial fronts in southern glaciers, melting at a very fast rate. However if you suggest things that are not true, all you end up doing is making people disbelieve, the other good things you are saying.
