PETE BEST, I've Got a Secret 1964

- The Beatles were JOHN, PAUL, GEORGE, and PETE ... that is, until Pete was kicked out of the band in 1962, just as the group was about to take off into the stratosphere.
From 1964, a very special "SECRET ..."
I heard a radio interview with Pete Best a few years ago, on the Howard Stern show. Howard asked him how he felt about having left The Beatles just before they became famous. Pete said, "Howard, I played on the first six Beatles records. Because of those six songs, I never had to work another day in my life."
There you go.
6 years later but I must respond.. Pete worked almost his entire life. The Beatles didn't give him anything until around the 80s.
@@tmpqtyutmpqty4733 No, until 1994, for the Anthology 1
He did work
@@PachinhoG2024 Only... he didn't have too. JK
@@JustFunandGames He certainly did have to work he got zero from 30 years
Pete must have been horribly disappointed. But he kept on !
Then FINALLY, after 30 years... he was awarded nearly $4 million for his few appearances on the Anthology releases.
He kept it together ! Good man.
He deserved every penny because he was ruthlessly stabbed in the back. He would have committed suicide 18 months after, if it was not for his mother and brother who intervened, this guy went through hell and back, i feel the media have not given him the respect as a former beatle because of the lack of interest over his early years after his sacking. i think its about time they made a movie of Pet Best life starting from the day of his sacking i think it would make fascinating viewing.
@@yell50 most definitely!
@lucy bond I wish it will happen
“Best of the Beatles”
He did get royalties..but it wasn't that mucg
Pete didn't leave. He was fired. But I personally think that this shows a lot of class on Pete's part. He could have said how he was fired and how unfair it was, but he did none of that. I totally respect him for this.
Yes he was sacked however the program makers of the show thought it would be too controversial for him to say he was sacked (remember it was a light entertainment show) so they made up a lie for him to say on TV. Pete had an embarrassed chuckle to himself as he was repeating their scripted lie then to top it all the presenter made a belittling remark and said "well dont worry no ones perfect" this was the kind of crap he had to put up with for decades afterwards. However he did receive an unexpected wind fall of over
£ 2,000,000 royalties from the Beatles anthology album ( and this guy deserved every penny of it ) Only now in the later years of his life that the media have finally given him more respect as an ex beatle after all he has a huge insight into the years of the early Beatles.
No...it wasn't 'unfair' to finally fire someone who never improved as a drummer, and could not 'sing in key'.
By the way, he cannot play drums even now. Look at any videos a few years ago. His timing is horrible, and his "changes" of hi-hat and ride cymbal is absolutely incomprehensible and illogical. If he said he used to play "atom beat", it made me laugh. Maybe he meant "atomic disaster".
how is it more respectable to keep quiet about being fired from what was about to be the biggest band in the world unfairly? shit is unethical man
Why did he lie? I never heard him tell that version before. And nobody else has ever told that version.
I met Pete Best last night. He's a fantastic human being! He's very warm and sincere.
He was depressed as you can imagine and he tried to commit suicide a few years later. It must have been a living hell to see the boys become world wide superstars while he was doing an every day ordinary job. Just hearing then on the radio seeing them on TV must have been like a kick in the guts every time. I did read he did get royalties from the Beatles anthology album which amounted to between £1 million to £3 million it took decades and a long time coming but he truly deserved every penny.
Wow what a historic piece of TV!
Gosh Pete is so adorable!
Yeah very handsome❤
He's got a great attitude to life. He doesnt hold any grudges or resentment and was happy with his lot in life. After he got past the initial tidal wave of grief and depression of such a tumultuous event he came to terms with it and wished them all well. We can learn a lot from that.
"Why did you leave the Beatles?" "Well, there were several factors, but the deciding one was that they fired me."
I love the way he covers up his sacking by saying he wanted to start a group of his own . Youve got to still feel for him , he was pushed out just before the first recording.
It must have been truly devastating to Pete & his mum (the legendary Mona Best) to be kicked out of the band just as they were starting to take off.
Well, his life went on, which is to his credit.
This is the first time I’ve seen footage of him when he was younger. I didn’t know this existed so cool! He seems really quiet and shy Which is probably unfortunately why he wasn’t allowed in the band anymore.
NO, according to the Beatles, the main reason was that he just was no way as good as Ringo.
Yeah you’re right it’s because he wasn’t a very good drummer. I’ve heard two different stories and this one is correct I believe.
He told a better story than what actually happened lol.
A sweet lie. The man was still hurting
Heck yeah, he was still hurting. This was only 1964. Their best albums were yet to come.
@@TheIndependentLens 1964 he was just realizing how big they have become with conquering the U.S and Sullivan. He must have been at worst of his depression here. :(
I love how the emcee, when reading the names of the band he says "Paul McCartney isn't it?" OH how he will never have to be that confussed about it again!
I remember watching this episode when it first aired and knew who he was as soon as he walked in!
I always feel bad that Pete was sacked just on the eve of The Beatles' great success, but to be candid, as John so famously said, Pete was a good drummer, but Ringo was a good Beatle. Ringo's personality fit in with the rest of the band just perfectly -- and his drumming was highly intuitive, especially as they rolled into the REVOLVER/SGT PEPPER era.
John was just being nice (if he did in fact say that) because Pete was not at all a good drummer. He may have improved in later years but if you listen to the recordings it's painfully obvious.
What a heart-throb. ^^
I've never met Pete, but from all the interviews I've seen of him, he seems like a really fine person. I wish him the best!
My respect and admiration for you Pete !!!
I've got a secret was such an interesting show... hopefully CBS brings it back one day
He was nice looking.
That is what George Martin thought , but his drumming in the studio sucked .
He was not kicked out of the group "just as they were about to go into the stratosphere". He was kicked out of the group because they would have gone nowhere with him, because he didn't put in the work to becoming as good as they needed him to be.
An interesting dilemma, one that Pete Best had no choice over. Would you prefer if you were Pete Best, for it to be what happened i.e. be the fired drummer from the Beatles or not to have been a Beatle at all? Remember Pete made money from appearing on shows like this, from interviews, Beatle conventions etc. not to mention several million from the 1995 Anthology CDs. All this would be lost if he was never a Beatle, as would the constant jokes and the never ending "How does it feel?" questions.
he made his mark.
Omg!!! :O aww he was sooo handsome!!!
Yes, even Beatles spares were handsome !
Interesting concept of Pete walking down Abbey Road by himself . . . that's such an iconic photograph.
To clarify something that seems to be causing confusion, Lancashire is a county of England, Liverpool was once part of that county, now it's considered part of a separate entity called Merseyside which was created in 1974.
"Why did you leave the Beatles?" Because I was FIRED.
It was fate. It had to be John Paul George and Ringo
Also I read when they were not on stage he never hung with them, practice, etc.
Or John Paul George and Charlie (Watts)
@@merseybeat1963 Or John Paul, George, and Barry (Wom).
@@ray_ray_7112 who's Barry ?
John Paul George Stu and Pete then John Paul George and Pete for about 2 years while they got really good then..
@@merseybeat1963 It was a joke. Barry Wom was a Rutle.
His walk is so clean
Everybody in this world has thier own hell to live with. Pete's is a pretty big one.
Not Gonna Lie, But Pete Best
Was The Best Beatles Drummer Ever, They Should’ve Never Kicked Him Out, The Beatles Will Never Be The Same Without Pete Best.
How are you today,Mr Best?
IIRC, also around this time there was an episode where at the start of the show Garry Moore (the host), said something "We have big news for you tonight - the Beatles, live on our stage!" And then the curtain is pulled back and we see a poster with four tiny animatronic beetles pretending to play little instruments."
Pete Best was the original Beatles drummer. His mother gave them their original place to perform. His dark good looks made him extremely popular with female fans ( many considering him the best looking of the group). He accompanied the Beatles to Hamburg, Germany, where Ringo Starr was playing with another English band. Starr new Best and the other Beatles. When they returned to England the Beatles were discovered by Brian Epstein. Producer George Martin got them a recording contract, but the Beatles wanted Best out (many think it was resentment over his extreme popularity, although the Beatlels claimed it was his poor drumming). In this I'VE GOT A SECRET PROGRAM, Best explains that he released an album on which he played drums with the Beatles. The album was entitled BEST OF THE BEATLES. The record company was sued. However, years later, when the Beatles released ANTHOLOGY, Paul McCartney insisted recordings with Best's drumming be included. It made Best a multi-millionaire.
George Martin wanted him out, as well... the fact is Ringo is an amazing drummer and talent, and Best was barely mediocre
Yeah but he sucked
aw, sweet Pete !!!
Feels weird to watch him sporting a full set of hair and all youthful here and then jump 50 years later to his more recent television interviews. Life goes quicker than you think!
You might as well call this particular episode of the show I'll Have a Life-Long Regret.
"The job he had was as the drummer..."
And you hear someone say, "Oh my... Ringo..."
And the expression on Best's face there...
As much as Ringo IS my favorite, who CAN'T feel sorry for him there? Look at his face... he looks devestated and crushed and humiliated- all at once.
Poor Pete...
Pete was thinking, "Wrong-o is a lucky man..."
People feeling sorry for the guy are way off beam, I mean how many of us would have given their right arm to be in the Beatles for one song, never mind 2 1/2 of their formative years !
He sure didn't look comfortable when Gary Moore held up that photo of him and John, Paul, and George. Still, I salute you Pete Best and am happy you received millions from the Anthology series.
According to friends of his at that time he was absolutely brokenhearted. Just as the Beatles were within reach of fame and fortune, he was the one pushed out the door. He was reduced to tears. As a matter of fact, he would attempt suicide only a year or two after his appearance on this show (saved in time by his mother and brother). He wouldnt get his share of royalties until over 3 decades later when the beatles anthology was released in 1995. According to him, he is no longer sad or bitter.
Anti-bitterness propaganda is evil. Its entire history is as a device to airbrush oppression out of visibility + stop wronged peopls standing upfor themselves.
Ive had my own band do that to me, and there pretty known know and I felt like crap-ola. And the BEATLES are way more known so I can't imagine how much worse he felt. He is a nice guy. I met him and the Pete Best band in BENTON ILLINOIS 5 yrs ago, it was great.
Why did pete lie ? he was sacked from the group. I think he was advised what to say before the show
I remember that 1 interview when they asked him if he wished he was part of the whole Beatles thing he said, "Oh yes! Oh yes"!
@Sutter42 Not only that, but Pete Best and his mum helped manage the Beatles in the early days getting them gigs, and played with them for two days.
Man imagine how hard that would be.
strange. I still feel badly for him
Liverpool is in Lancashire.
Several yrs ago there was a show where they showed a video of him walking around his home town and his voice was over dubbed talking about his days with The Beatles. At the end he walked across the street by himself (ala Abbey Road).
If pete would have started singing solo he'd been a huge LEGEND
Pete had the looks but he was no singer.
@@yell50 Check out ‘Boys’ and ‘Kansas City’ by the Pete Best Combo which is Pete singing
@@TheMerseySound1 How do you know for sure that's Pete singing? Are you just assuming that because he sang those numbers when he was a Beatle?
Paul's jealousy,of not wanting competition in the looks dept contributed a lot. Yet, Ringo's drumming was the deciding factor.
Look lets be honest about this shall we? if Pete best was the best drummer in the world he still would have had the sack, his popularity with the female fans was huge in Liverpool he had more fan mail than the other three Beatles combined the local press was referring to the Beatles as Pete Best and the Beatles even Brian Epstein was dead set against the idea of sacking Pete but the slow burning resentment built up by the boys made them adamant, Pete best had to go and the rest is history.
Blame George Martin. He wanted nothing to do with Pete.
Here's my two cents: there is one reason he was fired and one reason only --- the others simply never really liked him. It had zero to do with his musical talent, given that Stuart and Ringo were both very poor musicians also at that time, though Ringo later developed into a fine drummer.
Pete wasn't a Beatle and he couldn't drum: PERIOD
I know Pete I have watched him play, he almost lost his stick's while playing, he has his brother on a set playing next to him for back up and cover up. The show is typical , show biz , it is fixed, Bess asked him if his secret had anything to do with his predecessor's. How did she know?..hmmm. All said Pete is a very nice man.
It wasn't fixed. In 1964, if a young man with long hair, said he was from England, the first and only thing people would think of is The Beatles.
@@JohnDoe-ol3yz Pete told me the was fixed , hey that's show biz .
Liverpool was at that time a city in the county of Lancashire
wow, thanks, i didn't know that. i was very confused as to why they kept saying that!
@@petervad - I think they wanted to make it more vague so the Liverpool connection didn't lead to a quick answer
West Derby, Lancashire - Liverpool would've given it away
he is badass
True. I think it's in poor taste that they brought him on the show in the first place -- the whole thing must have been an excruciatingly humiliating experience for him. Poor guy. The Almost Beatle.
It was an excellent act of revenge by him! It publicised his existence, which particularly at that date, was his fair right.
It is it really is, I can't imagine how he feels.
Quote: "He's a multi millionaire."
Much better than most of us. LOL!!
:-)
Great memories, thanks for sharing . . .
It was funny when Betsy Palmer asked Pete if there were 5 Beatles when he was in the band. She was technically right but I bet she thought Ringo was the 5th Beatle. It was John Paul, George, Stu, and Pete at one time in 1961. Otherwise, there were only 4 Beatles after Stu left the band in July 1961, shortly before he passed away.
"And Paul McCartney, isn't it?"...lol That was great!
Interesting, I'll check them out.
I've got Brian Epstein on "I've Got a Secret," but the quality is not very good. The moderator called him, "Barry Epstein." Very embarrassing!
That really is one for the book!
Pete should count his blessings that Henry Morgan didn't ask him any questions.
Haha it's funny how when they mention Ringo they show that random clip of him messing with a cigarette XD
He's the quiet type
Gotta be the saddest video with Pete I've seen.....
No one's perfect--except the Big Man On Campus--UPSTAIRS!!!!
Poor Pete was sacked from The Beatles. He said he wanted to start his own band and that he thought The Beatles woudnt be big but this was a fib by Pete. After listening to him I can understand why The Beatles got rid of him.Sad video of Pete Best.
The host assumed he was still connected "socially", but Pete didn't correct that. He had to say he left the group of his own accord. How could he say he was fired? Because that would require a long explanation and this show gave him only a few seconds to answer. Actually HIS predecessor left for that reason: he didn't see a future with them so quit to work in a bottle factory: Tommy Moore. By the way how many people knew (aside from you British blokes) that Liverpool is in Lancashire?
Yes, the girls screaming their heads off in Germany really cared about Pete's drumming.
He IS cute.
Of course I think the rest of The Beatles had more charming personalities whereas he is kinda shy, but Pete certainly has good looks.
Dunno about his talent as a musician, though I really can't imagine The Beatles without Ringo. Ringo was just a sweetheart. Lennon/McCartney was the backbone and without their songs they wouldn't have been legends. Harrison also had some underrated talent, couldn't imagine the band without him either.
It just wasn't meant to be...
We'll truly never know who was better. Nobody can be sure about that. I saw him peforming on Rio de Janeiro last year, and he is very good, though his age.
Such a beautiful guy inside outside.
He was the most popular Beatle the time he played in the group 1960-62.
Im not too sure about most popular
@@jerrysmith2354 Well, opinions are ok, but the facts speak :)
George got a black eye when they introduced Ringo on their gig at The Cavern. - the crowd kept shouting "we want Pete!", and Geo said something about how fine Ringo is...
Did you know Pete sang sometimes, standing by the mic in the front (there're photos).
Garry Moore at the end: "Well, he-he, no one's perfect!" (in other words - L O S E R!"
Lancashire is the area of England where Liverpool was. Smart move calling it that. By all accounts Pete is a nice man and had an alright life as a government servant. The windfall he received from Anthology sure helped a bit. However,Ringo can drum rings around Pete. Ringo is a human metronome ,Pete had a hard time keeping time.
Deberían hacer una película basada en pet Best su historia se presta para un film polémico
@WWAHP That's what he was told to say. The guys felt threatened by Best, he missed some gigs, Ringo sat in, and he was replaced.
Funny how the Beatles get blamed for PB's demise, as it was a George Martin decision. He brought in a session drummer for the please please me recording,
no..the beatles got rid of him via brian epstein.
Both Martin and the Beatles came to the decision independently. Martin brought in Andy White, who later insisted that was himself on "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me". The Beatles unanimously agreed to tell Brian to tell Pete he was fired.
No, listen to GM interviews. GM says he told them to get another drummer. Kirk out.
Interesting story starting to emerge that Ringo was not even the Beatles 1st choice after Pete Best. The drummer of local band Earl Preston and the T.T`s , Ritchie Galvin was approached by both Brian Epstein and Bob Wooler to take over, but declined as he was in a close relationship and did not want all the travelling that it would involve, and also he disliked John. The source of this is Spencer Leigh`s book, "Cavern, The most famous Club in the World" . Make of it what you will but Spencer Leigh is a local, and a well respected author who was certainly around Liverpool when this was happening.
And Lewis Collins too.
You ain't heavy, you're my brother.
from Lancashire?????..... and for all these years I thought it was Liverpool.... 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧😜😜😜😜
According to Wikipedia:
One week later, on 11 September 1962, the Beatles returned to the same studio to discover that George Martin was dissatisfied with Ringo Starr's drumming, and they made a recording of "Love Me Do" with session drummer Andy White on drums while Starr played tambourine. As the tambourine was not included on the 4 September recording, this is the easiest way to distinguish between the Starr and White recordings.
Pete really had the charisma department . The other Beatles had to let him go to be noticed and Ringo was the catalyst they needed to put John and Paul in the front and center
Looks wise, maybe. Personality wise, no. Pete certainly seems like a nice guy and all, but he just didn't have the wit that John, Paul, George and Ringo all had. Seems very quiet and soft-spoken, not like a Beatle at all. The whole thing about looks wasn't true either, Ringo was clearly the better player and got heaps of fan mail later on anyway, so it's not like it ever mattered. Sucks for Pete definitely, but that's just the way of the business. The other three just wanted Ringo more. Good on Pete for keeping his head up and carrying on, though
It is sad, but ultimately it was due more in part to: George Martin's dissatisfaction with him during an EMI audition in the early summer of 1962, George's active dissatisfaction with Pete's drumming and also a collective sense that he wasn't the right drummer for them. The Beatles were looking to conquer the world and Pete was holding them back. Still, it was a very difficult thing for all parties.
"Life is tough..." What you say is so very true. Again, I know you can't believe everything you read, and there is a lot that has been written about the Beatles, but I once saw a quote attributed to Lennon that said the Beatles were willing to walk over anyone to get to the top. I believe it was the 1971 Rolling Stone interview where Lennon said the Beatles were "bastards." And in the end of Stu's membership in the band, even Lennon was said to have been giving Stu cold stares on stage.
@WWAHP I can understand why he would lie. You never want to say you got fired from a job, rather it's best to say you resigned. Plus the Beatles PR machine had already stated he quit and he went along with it. In the end, he made a lot of money off Anthology. It would be ironic if he ended up the last member to pass away. Paul is a true coward & jerk for not even speaking with the guy after all these years.
if best was kept on as the drummer they would have been just as successful after all it was Lennon /McCartney who were the song writing force of the group, while Pete best was the drummer with the film star looks which all the girls went crazy for. Pete had a lot more fan mail also than the rest of the Beatles put together. Girls shouted Pete every time the group played in Liverpool. With Pete fired, Ringo became the luckiest guy in show business history. Thanks for your comments.
Hello AkiroXKE!
I've been wondering about that too! :)
Pete has told, that George was drunk all the time in their first Hamburg trip. And George has said, that Pete was drunk all the time... So, maybe there was a battle behind Stu and Paul as well and right from the beginning.
But after listening to all the possible Pete Best related 1960s audiomaterial and seeing all the possible tv-performances: despite trying to be objective, he's an emperor with no clothes...
All the best

I knew he was.
Ahhhh, great question ....
You propose a very interesting twist to this story. Mona surely knew the Beatles and the whole Liverpool youth scene, so she may have wanted a piece of the action . . . .
The BEATLES are my Favorite Rock N roll band of all time, however i feel horrible for pete, if he wasnt wanted in the group. help him somehow, like a new band that the beatles could helped him with, in all paul, george and john were cowards in not doing anything, after all they started the band in pete bests house.
I like the Lancashire reference
holy hell, i did not know the guy was this handsome (i am heteroseksual, but not afraid to say that he has the looks) as handsome as ricky nelson, elvis and cliff richard. no wonder they kicked him ou and replaced him with an ugly 5 foot5 tall drummer. it's all politics man. they should have compensated him long ago with 10 millions or so. fucking politics.
@tunenito No, of course, and he never talked again to any of the Beatles; in Neil Aspinall´s funeral Paul denied to attend it because he knew Pete was going to be there and he didn´t want to run into him. (Neil was Pete´s best friend during the Beatles).
@tryst0 I don't know about that as John seemed to possess the most of those qualities you mentioned, especially in the early days. George was the quiet one and Paul seemed to speak in serious tones. It was John who was the cut-up.
It's interesting. Best sang a few songs with the Beatles, but apparently hasn't sung since. One song he sang with the Beatles was Boys. His band released their own version in 1965. I was excited to get it, wanting to hear what Pete sounds like as a singer, but it wasn't him. The drumming was fine.
Was this the famous album "Best of the Beatles", where people thought they were getting a Beatles compilation instead?
Hello GeileMickey!
I know something about drumming and after listening to the Polydor recordings, the Decca sessions, the Radio Bristol live performance and the Star Club live performance from 1962 I have to say, that Ringo was a better drummer in every sense. Despite trying to be as objective as possible.
Then the main point; Pete has got his fair share from the Anthology. He has even admitted that on his own documentary! :)
All the best

" the questions is would the songs have been hits if best was the drummer... of course they would!! " No they wouldnt. Lesson to songs with pete and then ringo and you can tell the difference. Without ringo there would be no Beatles. I do fell for Pete though.. Most be hard to see beatles sky rock and sale billion+ world wide in his face..
It's too bad that Tom Everett Scott never got cast as Pete Best in a biopic in the 1990s. He would have done a good job. Oddly enough, he played a drummer in "That Thing You Do" which was directed by Tom Hanks who is a huge Beatles fan and that movie has a lot of Beatle parallels including the fact that Scott's character, Guy Patterson, replaced another drummer.
