    There are some things that are cultural appropriation, like wearing a native american headress or a bindi. But im pretty sure wearing braids and a nude matte lip isnt culturally appropriating.

      Hello Michele Phan, I remember when I was 16 or 17 yrs old , I always watch your make up video. I save it to my laptop your video so I can watch it many times . Because of you I inspired to do make up on my self. I remember that time I always ask my mom buy me some make up and try to my self while watching your video 😂. Now I’m already 26 and suddenly remember those memories, despite of many make up bloggers rise in RUclips. I just want to say to you that your the only best I watch ever. You make my teen life happier ❤️🫰🏻

    people want to talk about cultural appropriation while wearing 15,000 bundles of Brazilian, Malaysian, Filipino, Armenia hair. STOP IT. Fact is, we are all inspired by other races and we ALL "steal" things from other races. Hush up and be flattered! other people think what you're doing is cool. I'm sure we have more important things to worry about smh ... oh and btw (like it matters) I'm black :)

      All braided styles originated in Africa. But I didn't even think of her having braiding hair as cultural appropriation. It really didn't stand out to me that her was braided until I came to read the comments.

    • @nikijhonson1069
      @nikijhonson1069 8 лет назад +502

      +Lexus Locke It can't be proven that all braids came from Africa. In China it was normal (after the Mongols took over) for the men to wear a long simple braid in their hair. In many European countries braids were worn as a simple hairstyle that many women wore. For Native Americans braids were worn as a way to keep the hair out if the face, and also as a way to show the length of their hair. Braids are a multi-cultural hairstyle it's just certain types that people attribute to native African culture.

    Tbh, Michelle Phan is better at makeup tutorials than all the other beauty gurus on Instagram and some on youtube. Beauty gurus nowadays are putting too much makeup on. And by that I mean like too much foundation or too much concealer. Like chill! Just like what Michelle said. "A little goes a long way."
    I'm sure there are other gurus that don't use too much makeup either but I happen to notice Michelle very often. I've always been a viewer of Michelle fan since I was in the 6th grade. I'm now going into my junior year of high school and I still love to watch her videos. But it's occasionally because of course, I've been real busy with school and hanging out with friends.

Like you can safely have that opinion and I do appreciate Michelle for making such a simple and easy-to-follow tutorial but there was really no need to bring up other makeup artists who love their art as well into this

    • @Arienhn
      @Arienhn 8 лет назад +1

      +T Noor From my understanding, the braid isn't the only issue? And yes, of course other races braid their hair, but black people are known for their intricate braiding techniques. When someone mentions "braids", people tend to think about black hairstyles (cornrows, box braids, etc), not about Indians, lol. That's the reality.

    • @tnoor2859
      @tnoor2859 8 лет назад +3

      +Arienhn so what if she has two dutch braids in? LIke i'm honestly confused. Maybe because it's because i live in a more diverse area, but ALL cultures borrow from each other, including blacks. And she's asian, she can't really APPROPRIATE culture, she's apart of another minority.

    • @tnoor2859
      @tnoor2859 8 лет назад

      +Oana by Asian, i am referring to those from the east asian countries, such as China, Japan, etc. They ARE a minority in the US. I never said white people rule the world... My point here is that Michelle cannot "appropriate" black culture lol

    • @tnoor2859
      @tnoor2859 8 лет назад

      +Oana The whole thought of culture appropriation is that you are "appropriating" ie., making something seem right when it was considered wrong before. People claim that when Kylie wore those cornrows in her hair, she was appropriating black culture because cornrows were then seen as a fashion statement, when they were considered ratchet before. (I wouldn't know of this bc where i live, they were never seen as ratchet). In other words, It's been said by people that only whites can "appropriate culture" in America because they are the only ones that truly have a say. No one would change their minds about cornrows if Kylie didn't have them in. I'm just running with that thought. With this logic people are putting out, it is impossible that Michelle could be APPROPRIATING anything.
      Honestly, i don't even really believe in culture appropriation. I was raised in a multicultural environment, everything is cool to me.

    Why everyone say that is a culture appropriation ? If it is, what's the problem ? I mean, we can't make braids because we are not black ? We can't do a cosplay because we are not Japanese ? We can't wear a béret because we are not French ? We can't dance zumba because we are not latinos ? Just, what's wrong with you ?? Be open to over cultures is not criminal. We should stop doing discrimination. We should go everywhere around the world, share our cultures with others. This is not a culture appropriation, this is a culture sharing.

    • @naenae1964
      @naenae1964 8 лет назад +21

      +yumika43 I don't think people are suggesting she doesn't adopt the look - as always people miss the point that cultural appropriation is about acknowledgement. People aren't going to deny that berets are French but everyone is quick to dismiss the Black influence of this style despite using slang that Black people created.

    • @erinam10
      @erinam10 8 лет назад +27

      +yumika43 it's giving credit where credit is due. You shouldn't use slang and braids and imply that the look is "baddie" and then completely dismiss that you borrowed an African American term that is used widely right now...people are always borrowing and copying trends and cultures, but for some reason people borrow from black culture and never give credit or proper respect

      Thank you! If Michelle showed up in traditional African clothing, such as a dashiki, a turban, or a head wrap, or decided to plait her head in box braids or Bantu knots, I would understand (and be part of) the dissent. However, she is simply creating a look based on popular culture. I can vouch to seeing people of Asian, Arab, African, and Latin descent withe the same look on Twitter, being lauded for their "ethnic" beauty when they are merely creating a look based on modern trends. I also think people forget that Michelle is also a woman of color.

    I have no problem with cultural sharing. In fact, I commend it & wish it would happen more! I love seeing people of different cultures trying new things :D However, I do not like it when one race is bashed & made fun of for having a certain look, but when done by another race it is seen as hip. Needless to say, it is important that we love, share, & be happy. Our world will be a better place if we just learn these few things...

    right, this is for people who go on about a little thing called 'cultural appropriation'. Culture is something that should be shared between one another and was what, in the past, brought many different groups together. If we do not share our different cultures and ideas together, we will eventually become divided and, instead of appreciating the beauty of someone's culture, we will fear it. We should live in a place where ideas of beauty and love are shared as it will brighten up our world. For anyone reading this, you are beautiful - your culture does not change that.

      +Justin Rollins I indeed have watched the video and the first time I watched it I said the words "wait, so I'm not allowed to wear cornrows because I don't know where they generated from?" I think that's stupid. She states one phase in particular that I find extremely interesting; "but it's deemed funny or cool, when the privileged take it for them selves". There's so many privileged people in this world white AND black and of all cultures for that matter. That's like saying, "oh you're black but you're privileged, you're not allowed to wear cornrows then". There's probably plenty of black people who have no idea about the significance of "black hairstyles" but where them because, like most people, they saw them in a hip hop video or thought they looked pretty cool. Anyway we all have our different opinions on cultural appropriation:) x

    • @weirdzfully

      +Justin Rollins The problem here is that so many people don't know the difference between appropriation and appreciation.

    • @emilabanaszek4040

      I think there is nothing wrong with appropriation. I don't think it is inappropriate to wear for example kimono in Europe. I don't think that using features of some traditional clothing of some country is wrong. How does that make any harm? Another thing is that most of people here are talking about 'black people culture', I've never heard of race cultures. Stop being obsessive about your skin colours. This way you actually make barriers between different races, while we are all human beings and colour is just colour.

French braids aren't necessarily very African, a lot of European cultures having been doing this for YEAAARS. And her baby hairs weren't geled down like we do them, ppl with straighter hair textures tend to have baby hairs that naturally lay or wave

    I dont see the cultural appropriation?
    I can understand if it were cornrows or dreads but these are dutch braids, or a different version of french braids. French braids originated from Greek and Celtic culture. I know this video was called lowkey baddie but why are people upset about it? Dutch braids and cornrows are both variations of the french braid. Cornrows are defined to be braids tightly wound around the scalp, and in multiple separate braids, which Michelle clearly doesn't have. So why is this video getting so much hate?

    Michelle isn't wearing cornrows. But if she were and any black person felt like it was cultural appropriation, they're entitled to their opinion. Non-black individuals have no influence over black feelings. Braids originated in Africa, Nubia to be more specific and were also associated with Social class and societal roles. And black people today don't wear braids for fashion like white people do, it's to protect our hair and retain length. The more you know.

      Okay honey but thats you. Just because you personally dont get offended by something doesnt mean everyone should follow suit and not be offended. Also as you said your mexican. Do you hear people putting down latino women calling them ugly, and ghetto for their culture?No right your actually glorified and seen as a exotic beauty while black girls specifically af american girls are seen as those negative things.We are even fired from jobs and suspended from school because we wear our natural hair and style such as braids. So of course we will be a little salty when you guys can turn around and wear the same things as us thats apart of our culture but be seen as "urban" and "cool." Plus jus like you said above you and your people get credit when someone does a look inspired by your culture but when it comes to african americans we dont get credit I mean look at the people saying its a "dutch" braid when obvi her goal was to look urban "black"

      +arianna dandridge Michelle did not and will never mean any harm. In your life maybe there are bad situations but it's not like that around the world. If Michelle decides to make a whole video showing the beauty of your culture, take it and feel beautiful as you should feel everyday. That's all. Maybe the title offended you but the concept of the video and the context of it is much more important. And there is nothing wrong with it. Just be the best you can be and let yourself open up to the beauty of your culture that Michelle and many more other people actually treasure.

      +friangle this is so true. I do everything "right" as far as skin care goes, as well as guzzling water and sleeping like 9 hours a night and my skin just looks awful. I have acne, dark circles and lots of redness and it won't go away no matter what.

      @Lehmabeebi 8 лет назад +1

      +Nikki Sharpe It's all about what you eat!! You might be allergic to something you eat daily and that can cause acne. A lot of people don't know it and buy expensive skincare products. You have to know where it comes from. Could be dairy products, lots of people are intolerant and don't know it because it only reflects on their skin. Acne is not an illness, it's your body telling you that you're eating something you shouldn't be eating.

    • @MuSicPooL888
      @MuSicPooL888 8 лет назад +28

      Browns and greens are called earth tones in the color world; and there's warm and cool tones to every color. So like, a warm earth tone would be like a brown that has a red tint to it...like a reddish brown. A cool tone would generally tend to be more on the blue/purple tone side. But it is funny...it'd be so much easier to say use a brown and then point to one so we can get a color idea.

    • @jaylahthomas4174

      I totally agree so many people want to start doing Cornrows & all these other braids & get dreads because its trendy but then as soon as someone says culture appropriation everyone wants to deny it no matter how obvious it is & try to distance it for black culture or use the whole black girls wear weave & straighten their hair excuses ( which never made sense to me since straight hair or having weave isnt a cultural thing & people of all races wear extensions & straighten their hair) , & want to complain & try & say its just a hairstyle , just because now its "trendy" to other cultures now but if it was any other culture's traditions it would be seen as bad & offensive

  • @jordanelizabethlooks

    • @brianaa96
      @brianaa96 8 лет назад +9

      It's the whole look put together and the fact that it was titled "lowkey baddie." Smoothing out baby hairs and purposely framing the face with them with that hair style and makeup and the words "lowkey" and "baddie" are apart of Black culture. Culture is not a single thing or style, it's a combination of styles, manners, and values a particular group of people practice.

    • @BrittanySmoot
      @BrittanySmoot 8 лет назад +67

      +Briana A it severely bothers me that people are ok with basically saying "only black people can dress like this/talk like this/ wear this hairstyle". How does that not seem wrong? She isn't wearing it in a degrading way. She isn't saying "I am trying to be black" or acting that way in the slightest. People need to calm down.

    • @CatElectraa
      @CatElectraa 8 лет назад +28

      are you serious? most people have baby hairs. it's the act of styling them deliberately that is common in black and Latinx cultures. for years they've generally been seen as "ghetto", but suddenly its become a new trend that doesn't give credit to its originators.

    • @brianaa96
      @brianaa96 8 лет назад +6

      +Brittany Smoot +Brittany Smoot Ok. I totally understand what your saying. And although I personally am labeling this as "appropriation," like many other people, I can not speak for everyone else. My problem with this video is that it's like Michelle, and many other people, do not give credit when inspired by Black culture and that takes away the knowledge of how Black people contribute to the beauty community and it's deprives people of knowing black culture. I've seen so many videos on RUclips about "Arab makeup", Korean beauty trends, etc. I'm not saying those kinds of videos correctly represent those cultures but they do give credit. When credit is given where credit is due people can see how different cultures contribute to their style. I think that's important because everyone of every culture, ethnicity, race, etc has so many great elements and giving credit is just a simple way to show a little respect.

Black, white, purple, it doesn't matter your race. we live in a society where everyone takes offense to everything when in reality it's shouldn't be offensive at all! Do black ladies get hate when they do a "white girl" hair, make up, and outfit look? no! fashion is supposed to be universal, it shouldn't be that just because Michelle isn't black she can't wear her hair in braids or wear dark lipstick. We all need to learn how to embrace each other instead of bashing one another for wearing make up and doing out hair.

    I really like this look because it's simple and you can actually try it out. most makeup looks are getting a bit weird. of course it depends on what look you like the best, heavy or light, crazy or simple, I won't judge. but for me I HATE the makeup trends these days. Too much weird liquid lipstick colors, bake bake bake face.. It's really not my type. I wish people now stop caking their faces to make themselves "unique" but I'd rather want a look thats more of enhancing(?) their natural beauty instead of a crazy-ish trendy look. But if you like those looks then good for you! But nowadays as I just said, I wish people could stop trying to get attention with the weirdest colors they could find and blab it all their faces and people being like "SLAYY OMG LOVE THAT LOOKKK". I mean I dont care if you like it but i get a feeling they don't but just trying to.. meh its just my opinion. But anyways... Love the look!:)

      No no no no no. Unless the person claims that part of the culture as their own, it is most definitely NOT cultural appropriation. It is cultural appreciation. If they're wearing the hairstyle and not claiming it as their own at all, then they most likely have done the research and know what it means to that culture. That, or they just like the hairstyle and it gives them confidence. Why do people these days try to censor everything for everyone else instead of trying to share their culture because they're proud of it? I don't understand. Before you say I'm fully white and have no culture, I am both Irish and Native American so think before you speak.

    I like that she doesn't use all the common luxury brands like YSL or Lancôme or Mac, she's very unique just like the brands she uses

    I don't know what it is, but Michelle is absolutely Beautiful with or without makeup. Her voice is also so mesmerizing and calm. I love it.

    I can't believe people are arguing over this it isn't a race reference it is a pop culture reference... She can wear and say whatever she wants and she should be able to do it without ignorant people insulting her

      +Ronnie Lee steals it? you do realize every race in America has brought something to the table through pop culture or some other way that has attracted everyone to incorporate it into their everyday wear, speech, music style/taste, or just life in general, right? If it's not exclusive to your race(s) native culture, it's going to mix in with American culture at some point in time. Especially if it becomes mainstream. Latinos brought thick eyebrows, Reggaetón, Spanish slang, as well as influenced a lot of hip hop/r&b. Arabs and Indians brought dances and makeup styles. East Asians brought technology. All of Asia brought over different styles of physical exercises and holistic medical treatments. You really wanna get mad over the word baddie and some Dutch braids?

      +xxPhantomSoul The issue is that it's considered ghetto and trasy for black people to do the stuff in our culture but when non black people do it it's "new" and "trendy"

    i feel like lot of the steps in this natural look are so extra. she uses eyeshadow as eyeliner, then literally goes over it with eyeliner. haha personally, i feel like it's too unecessary and time consuming for a natural look >.> but i guess...
    you do you michelle

      She uses this technique in alot of her videos, it's to soften the eyeliner line so it doesn't look so harsh! :) I hope this helps

      Natural looks always require so much more time really. It's okay if you think it's an unnecessary step but some guys and girls love this sort of look and find the time to do the extra step.
