BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The moment I heard "Hi, I'm Mathias", I went to the comments section right away. Fellow humans certainly don't disappoint. Hilaaaarious comment! LOL!
man, I was struggling with hammer-ons for YEARS! I was totally convinced you can't possibly do this on acoustic and you need lots of amplification. And lots and lots of force and I never seemed to have enough. Your instructions made me play loud hammer-ons in SECONDS. THANK YOU!!! I never imagined it could be so easy!!!
really this was an absolutely brilliant video just by how clear and slow you explained every single thing that a beginner would think to ask or be confused about. Spot on proper teaching
Excellent instruction. Learning that the key to hammer-ons is speed not strength was invaluable. I had been struggling with getting a clean sound and this tip made a huge difference. Thank you Mathias!
Ok so don't misunderstand me I'm not really great at guitar but i could actually do this from just this video you're a seriously good teacher thank you omg
What would I have done without this video. My teacher is asking me to do hammer-on and pull offs for malaguena. The most encouraging thing he said is "you'll get it". After several hundred times of trying to "get it", I became despondent. So as a last resource I went to your video. Now, I really think I will GET IT. Thank you very much.
Thanks, I really enjoyed the lesson. I like your focus on the joints and the muscles involved and not only where to put the fingers. It's easier to understand when you think of the entire motion like this. Cheers!
Anyone else came here because they felt yousician wasnt explaining both of these good enough lol. And the fact that they taught you with an eletric guitar
Yeah! Yousician was completely useless when it came to explaining this. They never said anything about plucking the string with your fretting hand when you do pull offs
Having trouble playing hammer-ons or pull-offs? Watch this guitar lesson video to make sure you are using the correct technique. Hammer-Ons and Pull-Offs Guitar Lesson
I know this is from forever ago, but thank you for this. I've really been struggling learning this technique, but after this short video, I've got it far better than I did before.
Honestly thank you so much. I've haven't been able to do this until now. Your tip about the active joint and specific placement of hammer on .. fab. game changer. I hope you see this after all this time :-)
Wonderful lesson - concisely, yet patiently explained, with easy-to-follow, and easy-to-watch techniques. Truly the best, and most powerful video I have ever seen on this topic - thank you!
I'm a noob taking an online guitar course, and while it is very good, it expects me to already know how to do hammer-ons and pull-offs, so this was fantastic. Thank you, Matthias.
I see so many tutorial videos and not one of them show it like this one. What's right an what's wrong on pull offs. Super. Thanks for this useful how - to.
tried learning this for a while and was very frustrated until i realized it is most probably because i am playing on an electric guitar that is not connected to anything XD
Man, you made this so simple. Have been having a huge problem with the note dying because I've just been "pulling-off" but this helped so much, thank you.
At 4:20 towards the centre of the tab, it "hammers on" over an entire other note? Can you maybe link me a tutorial on how to read tab music properly? Thanks!
If I understand your question correctly: It's not skipping the note, that sequence on the fifth string would be played by plucking the third fret, hammering onto the 4th fret, and then hammering onto the 5th fret. So you would pluck once and hammer twice for those three notes. If you're use to reading text tab you might see it as 3^4^5 or 3h4h5. or some other variation depending on the author. (Sorry for old response, figured I'd answer it in case someone else had the same question)
More guitar videos should use his technique of zooming in to both the left and right hands and splitting the screen so you can see both. Really helpful!
Ah thank you so much for this! I was stuck in Rocksmith which I'm using to learn guitar on a part of hammer ons and I could never figure it out. I finally know how! Thank you!
when I watched this for the first time, I thought you were just playing guitar as an intro. when I watched a second time to see what the hell this guy was talking about guitar Jesus, I knew they were hammer-ons. Good video 👍
Ay, I've been doing this technique for years, I thought it was called, "transitioning" but I just learned that it's called, "Hammer-on", & "Pull-offs". I don't know how I went by 10 years without knowing this..
6:37: "That 3rd finger of course is touching the 3erd string, but is muted by the fact that my index finger is right there so it's not sounding" is very confusing cause if your index finger is touching the string and is still sounding.
I'm trying to master progressive mathrock. A lot of what they do involves pulling off or hammering on half a step. So instead of plucking at 5 and pulling off to 3, I'd be plucking 5 and pulling off to 4. This is incredibly difficult since there is so much tension between adjacent frets. It would be like trying to pluck strings only at the bridge; they don't resonate. Is there any technique that I can use to make these sound loud and clean? I'm completely self taught so I may have been using the wrong technique for about 20 years now. Is there any way to unlearn that and learn the right way faster? Also, what is the right way for half step pull offs?

You must be an amazing guitar teacher since you literally inject the lessons directly into the student's soul with your steely gaze.
When he told me to "go forth...and rock", I knew my life would never be the same.
Such majestic hair.
A really clear and instructive lesson but whenever I caught his stare I had to punch a wall to feel manly again.

webworm13 We're glad that the lesson was helpful. When learning, knowing "what" to play doesn't necessarily say "how" to play. Best of luck to you!
