- Join me in this video while I head out in my kayak, to a fairly new spot for me, where I target Cape Cod Bay Winter Flounder. I was here briefly the week prior for the first time where I caught one short flounder so I didn't end up making a video. This day couldn't be much more opposite of the last, where I caught my limit of Winter Flounder, AKA "Black Backs", in a short span of time when I started drifting in my kayak in about 36ft-40ft of water for them. I did try my usual method using chum, but I ended catching a bunch of crabs, which were all edible and nice bonus snacks. I also briefly show you in this video my favorite Winter Flounder rig that I use when I'm in a boat or kayak. Winter Flounder are an awesome light tackle fish to go after in the spring and also are great table fare. Enjoy the video and get out there and fish!

How's your luck catching winter flounder this spring so far?
Thanks very much for the info! Very kind of you to make these videos. Fishermen should always have a learning mindset. Your rig with those smaller bait holder hooks work great to keep the worms on.
Thanks glad you enjoyed
Hell Yeah Bud 🤙🏽 Another great video in the book 👍🏽
Thanks 👍
Wow man great video, love the explanation of rigs/techniques, so great to see numbers like that.
Glad you liked it!
Love to see those black backs!
Me too. They are slowly coming back I think
great video, thanks for showing rig and techniques to catch this species, will try out of kayak soon.
Good luck!
Will be getting our kayaks out soon get some fishing going on!!!
Good luck out there!
Awesome video Dave, I have a 14’ aluminum boat I’m wanting to take out for flounder!
Go for it!
I had a 14ft tracker I used to take out in Boston harbor for flounder. I loved every minute of it
@@davedeefishing I bought it a few months ago, I think I want to take it on a few more lakes to see how reliable it is before I head offshore. Should be fun!
Hi Dave. Wondering what time of year the winter flounder bite dies off? I just saw this video and I’m trying to catch them around Portsmouth, NH. Thanks!
Great job making these videos!
Best bites I find are April thru mid june in 10 -30ft.I find it dies off from June thru September. I see them bite well in Sept again in 10-30ft. You can still get them all other time but they will be deeper like 40ft +
Haven't tried yet. Over here in tiverton ri monster tautogs in shore right now crazy catches.
I've caught some very nice tog from Grinnell before and under the bridge
Excellent spots, but I don't do crowds lol
Every day under that bridge, it's popping with people, lol. My preferred spot on weekends is jamestown, not many people where I go lol. Have fun out there.
Flounder still around?
Got a few north shore of mass
Couple questions how are you keeping your fish fresh? Are you using a cooler of some sort? With the system actually Potentially work up in New Hampshire waters/estuaries
Normally I have a cooler, this day it was 48 degrees out so they were totally fine out of a cooler for a few hours. This rig will work fine up there.
Is that fish eatable?
100% very sought after food fish in New England
Were you fishing any structure (ledge, drop off, channel edges) on your drifts?
Flat pure sand bottom
Limit per day person 2 fishes? RI or Mass
8 fish where I'm at
you're welcome lol
@davedeefishing Hi, not asking exact spots or anything but where is a good place to launch a kayak where I can go for winter flounder? I live in upstate NY and fished for flounder near NYC when I was young and would love to get out for them ASAP! Any help I would greatly appreciate
I was looking thru forums for winter flounder in NYC and doesn't seem to be a good population of them. I will look more though
@@davedeefishing Hey Dave, no i mean I'll drive to Cape Cod actually. I drive to New Bedford already to blackfish usually. I'm debating on either bringing my hobie outback or trailering my small boat.. I guess both would work fine. What I meant was I grew up flounder fishing in NYC area when they were plentiful, now there are few and far between. I'd like to come up there and try for them. If I do bring my boat I'll probably bring my kids fishing for them.
@@davedeefishing I've decided to trailer my boat this weekend. I'm trying to decide between going near Deer Island area or our out of Sesuit into Cape Cod Bay. Would ou recommend either place or somewhere else entirely? BTW, I was able to get unsnelled chestertown hooks on ebay.
Peddocks island is hot right now deer island should be too
