We used a kerosene heater my whole childhood for extra heat even though we had central heating but we always used it when the power went out during the snow storms.

If you had a drafty house, it may have been okay. Houses nowadays are sealed so tightly that I wouldn't recommend it. Carbon Monoxide is no joke
