Driving cross country with my elderly bird dogs are my idea of heaven. They lived till 15 and 13. We stayed in hotels, but also on back roads and dispersed camping in the Rockies/Appalachians.
Sleeping one night I was awoken by Isabella and Jasmine barking. There was someone walking around my truck. I pumped my 12 gauge and the footsteps swiftly walked away after saying I was armed. I was 25 miles from nearest paved road. If you would’ve honestly saw how remote I was, I had no idea where this person came from.

I'm convinced I got stuck behind the same small truck from story #4!! I know there are A-holes all over the world, but story is SO similar. 50mph limit, and guy in little truck is going 30 at best. N. Cal, hwy 1 has periodic passing lanes. Guy would gun it to 80+ mph to make sure I couldn`t pass, then back to a crawl. This continued for MILES. I was LOSING IT, but didn't want to crash or kill or die. Pulled over and let the guy dissappear ahead while I nursed my sanity back to a whopping 50%.

Safety tips from horror movies: always shower with the bathroom door unlocked. Make sure all your telephone lines are clearly exposed next to a pair of wire cutters. Get high! Your electric breaker box should he clearly labeled. Never, never put blinds or curtains on your your windows! Get high some more! Sharpen all your kitchen knives. Strut around naked in your home to answer the phone. When you hear a noise in the basement, always grab s non working flashlight to investigate the commotion.

Exactly. And if you're leaving in your car, especially when driving back-roads at night, make sure your cell phone battery is on 1%. Also, check to make sure your 'Fuel' light is on. Don't tell anyone where you're going & drive with your door unlocked. NEVER check the backseat before getting in.

Petrol stations are now easier to get to and open better hours, mostly, but still if driving bush I always top off the tank and stop for coffee every hour or so. Only in the last 2-3 years has phone coverage improved to eliminate those black spots on major highways, that no-signal image on my phone is burned into my brain though 😂 reason to not go “off the beaten track” …

That guy in the 4th story was a lot braver than I would be. I sure wouldn't speed up if someone is passing me this day in time. That situation could've easily turned violent, especially if the one passing also had bad intentions. I heard on the news one time where someone was going too slow and the one passing them started shooting at them. Luckily they missed but people have literally lost their minds these days. Best to not drive late at night anyway if you can help it.

I used to drive from New Mexico back to LA to see my parents after a full day's work. That drive was 13-14 hour drive and the national speed limit was still 55 mph. So I drove a lot of overnight hours. Many hours driving across Interstate 10 and Interstate 8 with many miles across on secondary highways to stay off thr Interstate and highway patrols. Lots of dark truck stops and sketchy gas stations but nothing paranormal or cryptids.

...In story #4 ---- why in the hell didn't the guy just turn around and head back into the direction he came from (the opposite direction) because a car can very easily do a 3-point turn, but a truck cannot. He would have lost that trucker for sure, and he could've at least gotten far enough away to call the police.

I'm not belittling the people in these stories. However, I grew-up at a time when there was no GPS, no cell phones, far less reliable cars, and a lot more undeveloped areas. There were almost no 24 hour gas stations and you either relied on yourself to get out of a situation or you were screwed. Rest areas were completely unmonitored You had to change tires, fix minor mechanical problems, navigate by yourself, talk yourself out of situations, or be in real trouble. I've driven from the East Coast to the West Coast many times, either sleeping in the car somewhere or in a really cheap motel. No guns, no dogs, no nothing. The worst of these stories is far less than the least of the experiences I had. I'm glad things are easier today.

I drove a semi for decades, one of my trips from Boston to Buffalo was a reg run, delivering auto parts to dealerships, I'd leave in the late afternoon after loading the trailer, it was a international cabover, about 1/2 way on the mostly empty NY thruway I nodded for a second, slapped myself in the face, once again nodded and opened my eyes to see i was drifting off the breakdown lane about to smash into an overpass cement wall, I veered quickly, almost jackknifing, 3 more seconds I would've smashed into the overpass, a cabover would've folded like an accordion, I never nodded again.

Who the fuck keeps an extra gas canister in their cars at all times? That's... not smart. It's one thing to fill up a jerry can and then transport it to your destination (lawnmower, etc), but to leave it in there for emergencies? There's a reason people who offroad/overland keep their extra fuel canisters on the exterior of the vehicle...
For what it's worth, Annie needs to calm the fuck down too.

This is why you carry, even if it's illegal. Preferably single or double action revolver as they are reliable and ready to go. Hell these criminals carry too just saying. I'm not just carrying a gun, but a crocodile Dundee style Bowie knife, a Gerber tool, extra ammo, Bobby pins (tips from SERE training for breaking out of handcuffs or flexcuffs), car maintenance supplies (self charged jump starter, socket set and hydraulic car lift for quick tire swaps). I've done some pretty risky driving at night in the middle of nowhere. Cops aren't a reliable source as there aren't many out there and they aren't going to show up out there in time. It's better to be prepared to save your own life than to wait on someone else to show up, even if it's illegal.
