As an Asian, I know the difficulty of saying, "I love you,” to my parents. As you can see, the parents also don't know how to react to such a statement. They downplay it or say thank you. It's not that there's no love, but it's quite hard!
In Brazil, where I'm from, it's different. Parents here (most) are loving. If you tell them you love them, chances are they'll make an even sweeter statement. If I mentioned this to my mother or father, they would shower me with loving words. This is just one of many cultural differences.
Is very interesting for me to see this perspective. As a Mexican, I can say that most of us are very warm and affectionate. I’ve never said a “goodbye” to my parents without an “I love you”. I call them every now and then to just see how are they doing and tell them that I love them. There’s not a day that goes by without my father sending me a text and telling me that he loves me. This makes me feel so grateful for all the love I have received from my parents and the confidence I have to go and give them a big hug anytime ❤
Keep trying to reach to your parents dont let their reaction be a break to your relationship because life is too short to be wishy washy in showering your parents with love even if its embarrassing lol
Here in latin america, I think that people are warmer and affective 😅 I say "I love you" to my parents almost every days and I hug them. Are cultural differences
I never say it face to face....it's so weird...and after all my parents don't say it to my too lol😂 but i want know whats we feel when we say 'ily' Sry for my English broken *~*
I’m American so saying “I love you” to my parents and my kids is an everyday thing, but my ex husband is Asian and always had a hard time saying it, but showed love in other ways. I can see how it makes the phrase “I love you” feel that much more special and touching when it is finally said ❤
I don’t know. Despite it being said all the time, I still feel that it’s very touching and special to say “I love you” to my loved ones. I don’t share that bond with anyone else but them.
I'm American but this is the opposite for me, haha. We do say "I love you" sometimes but not every day. Idk, maybe it's just my family haha but for us, it's a phrase that is more special and important for us and holds a lot of importance in our family. But on the other hand, I never heard my friends say it to their families either so maybe it's just where I'm from? Hahaha
Making I love you sentence so normal will not left with much value as before so yes we asian have a great value to this sentence we can't say randomly to anyone not even a close friend
Dear parents, just because your child is smiling at their phone, doesn't mean they have boyfriend or girlfriend, they are just watching this masterpiece
I’m not even suicidal or anything like that but I just took the train alone after a disagreement with my dad and he thought I had jumped (he had literally talked to police in the area), so I wonder what this would do to him
I love that so many of the parents respond with, “thank you my child”, or, “make sure you eat/rest,” that’s just how they know how to say, “I love you too.”
3:45 The nervous laugh after “I love you” tells you it’s not expressed often how much she loves her.. sad but also happy moment. Gotta Cherish our loved ones❤️
Yeah. We don't usually say "I love you" to show our love. We show it with our actions and how we care and treasure each other. I can't say I LOVE YOU when I really love someone (parent, friend, partner) not because I'm shy, in fact it's not my love language. I show them with my actions.
Same. Words are good but actions are better. Of course saying "I love you" to the people we care for is also good. Since it makes people happy to hear those words from the one they love as well. By the way, did you guys eat yet? Make sure to eat and don't skip meals, take care of yourselves especially these times of pandemic :>
As an American I do find it very sweet how the parents respond by SHOWING their love in some way. It seems to me that a lot of Asian cultures value acts that demonstrate love more than verbally saying it. Several of the parents made sure their kid had food to eat, asked if they were okay, or offered money, said "Make sure you come home early to be safe," or some other way to show their affection. They were saying "I love you" back, in their way.
@@pwills122 because of our culture, of course we love our parents and our parents know that very well so we don’t have say it. It’s like saying “sky is blue” to your parent, it’s sound very wired right?haha
It's sad that the children were hoping that their parents would say ' I love you' back yet only a very few actually did🥺 You could tell many of them were disappointed to not here that response.
It’s not that they don’t love them back it just that they can’t express. But their love is more deep then we can ever think. Parents love are unconditional
Yeah, same happened in the parents saying I love you to their children video. I think because they feel awkward since it never happened before and they dont know how to respond.
Not for me... I tell my mom I love her everyday and Hug her mostly everyday and not she’s soo annoyed of it and sometimes she just yell at me for hugging or saying I love you 🤦🏻♀️
It’s so hard for me to tell my parents that i love them, which i really do. Feels like you’re stuck in between, to tell them and feel awkward or to shut up and feel sorry for not telling them. Worst feeling ever
When I read your comment I was like "yeah it's almost in the end and I didn't cry but it was cute" THEN the next videos came and you know what happened
The girl crying after telling her mom she loves her made me emotional. It’s kind of heartbreaking that Asians rarely say that to their parents/kids. I know love is shown in other ways but sometimes it so refreshing to actually hear those words from the people you love and vice versa.
“Asians” is a very broad term. This is Chinese culture. Many south East Asian countries tell their parents they love them just as much if not more than western countries.
@@bellaaaahhh I am a Asian too and I kid you not I haven't nor my parents say that we love each other if I say them this they will think I am about to die or in danger something
@@bellaaaahhh your statement is kinda ironic cuz "Southeast Asia" is also a broad term. Cuz I'm from Southeast Asia and I know many families who don't say I love u to each other lol
@@goodlife1302 yeah I'm fine too. I am glad you're okay. I lost my dad when I was 3, barely remember anything from that time. So idk how it is like to lose a parent. Though, I can see the pain in my elder brother's eyes cause he was around 10 so he knows it much better. Idk what I would do if i lose my mom. Since we are Christians, we get message From God while praying and He said that our family must pray cause mom's life is short. We are constantly praying that God prolongs her life . I am keeping my faith that God will not make me an orphan right now.
THEY DON'T HAVE TO. Because they already did every single second for years and years and years.... when they gave you birth, when they fed you, when they admitted you to school, when they took you to the park, when they gave you safe shelter to live, when they bought you a toy, when they took you to the doctor when you were sick...... That's "Love" . Everyday. Every second.
Indeed the words that are difficult to express are "I love you" to our parents, I cried seeing this because I never said those words to my parents too;
If you’ve never said ily to your parents say it to them now and if you find it weird just text them no matter what they’re your parents and they are the reason you exist so even if they hate you they still are your parents. T-T
@ARMY AN BLINK Don't worry, those words will be with you if you or should you ever have children. Raise them well and fill them with the love you missed, one day, you'll be on the receiving end of those words.
2nd gen Chinese American here. No problem saying "I love you" in English and my folks will say it back. Would never consider saying it in Chinese haha. It just feels weird.
The way the parents suddenly goes silent for a moment after hearing the “I love you “ word means that they really not used to hear it more often and didn’t really expect it,but you can hear their cheerful voice after hearing it.
we express "i love you" in a different ways. like asking "have you eaten?", "do you want me to buy you something?" , "you want money?". it just weird to say directly "i love you" in mostly asian country as it means i love you as sexually. so yeah we express our love with action not by words that speak louder than action.
I never said to my parents that word but deep inside, I'm afraid to lose them. I love them from the bottom of my heart even though I know that I am not a perfect child for them.
You know I'm too shy. We always have conflict in our relationship and.. it's not easy for me. But thank you TREEMAN for this heartwarming videos! Soon I will visit China ☺sending all my support and love from Philippines!
u dont have to be shy to say "I love you" to the people who took care , bought u food , gave u everything that u needed and loved u with their whole heart , I hope u say I love you to them , They'll like it a lot
It’s interesting to see the Asian culture and the dynamic they have with their parents surrounding emotional vulnerability. This video was beautiful. You can tell it’s not something that’s said a lot and in that moment, both child and parent will always remember that call .
hm, I think a lot of Asian families do have emotional vulnerability. It's just that the specific phrase "I love you" is rare and not said nearly as much as it is in some other cultures.
@@angelinaz7292 of course … I’m not saying they don’t have emotional vulnerability, I’m saying i find the dynamic interesting. “I love you” isn’t said often which is interesting
As an Asian American, “I love you” isn’t normally spoken in an average Asian American household unless they are extremely close or it’s directed to or from your grandparents. Since saying “I love you” isn’t a norm, Asian parents assume their child is in some sort of trouble or is in need of some cash when they receive this three lettered phrase. This doesn’t usually apply to younger ages. My mother and I used to have a thing where we just randomly say I love you and then respond I love you more and so forth. I was like 6 though. This is for anyone that doesn’t understand why these people are sort of cringing before saying it.
That is so true. In Asia we express our love by doing stuff for others n not saying stuff. Maybe that is why I felt so awkward while the entire video was going on
Asians (parents) do not easily, readily show/ express their love to children... and we were never taught how to 'reciprocate' such love. This is priceless 😌
@@truelovewontwait ummm wtf that really pisses me off like what’s the point in even having kids if you can’t provide enough love for them. Like the whole idea of even having a child is to provide it with enough emotional and mental as well as discipline ofc but love must always be the number one thing in the family or otherwise it won’t work. Like how tf do you expect children to become stable adults if they never had that parental love. I swear my advice to ppl who have “difficulties expressing their love for their children” (which btw is inexcusable like stop trying to be the victim in this situation cuz that’s just basically neglect and you’re just making yourself look stupid) is that if you don’t know how to show love to your kids then you’re obviously not mature enough to have them given the fact that you’re acting like a child yourself
@@its_just_me6183 well to be fair, parents show love in many ways. Especially when it comes to Asian parents, it’s in their actions. But yeah, nevertheless, words are powerful, and it would be so much better if parents knew how to verbally send the message across as well. It makes a huge difference
Honestly, if your parents don't teach you to say "I love you" since very young, it's so hard to do it when you grew up. It's not only Asians but people all around the world.
I mean it's not like they didn't teach me but it's just so hard like i would start tearing up and that is NOT what I want (I hate crying so i try to avoid it as much as I can lol)
Its not like a thing to teach . In asia we show our love through acts . Its like saying blood is red . You already know that they love you and they know that you love them . parents also say i love you rarely .
As an American, I say, "I love you" to my parents all the time, and seeing how much courage it takes to say the same thing in another country, it makes me sad
maybe because ily is a big word for us and we prefer to express love in many ways instead of saying those three words verbally,,, and we do have the thought that if 'i love you' is normalized it would lack the meaning of it over time, its a very sacred word for us
I’m Asian, I called my mom to do this. It went like this. Me: “Hi mom.” Mom: “Yes?” Me: “am I disturbing you right now?” Mom: “No, I was making lunch. What do you want?” Me: “I wanted to say I love you” Mom: “Ok what’s wrong?” Me: “Nothing, I just wanted to tell you” Mom: “Don’t lie, what’s going on *switches languages*” Me: “Nothing- I just wanted to tell you 😭” Mom: ”If you say so, you better not be lying. Don’t forget to come home and do your chores and homework” Me: “Yes ma’am 😭😂”
A very different cultural feel 💚 brought me to tears. I tell my parents often how much I love and appreciate them. Both of them lost their parents as young adults and I want to make sure they know how loved they are.
For me (a Mexican who live in Mexico) is totally normal say to my mom and dad “I love you” or give they hugs every day. I don’t know why for someone’s it’s really difficult say “I love you” to her parents
The kids responds to the question ( Have you said" i love you" to your parents ) "No ,never " "I have not said it in years " "I only said it once " " No " "I should but I never say it " Parents need to hear that quite often 😔
FYI Asian parents and western parents kinda different though it might be normal for the western cultures but in asian cultures we didn’t say this often and if we said it both of us might be suspect to each other something must have happen
@@mishima433 not that different, some people think that it might be wierd or that they want something , and I get why . It's the same actually depends on the people tho😊
It's not actually like that. Even if we don't say "I love you" both parents and children know how much we love each other. We express it with our action. But when we express it with words it just becomes more meaningful and emotional
Me: *calls mom* Mom: “yeah hello?” Me: “I love you” Mom: “what do you mean what’s going on are you gonna hurt yourself please don’t do this it’s not the answer don’t you hang up on me keep me on call-“ Me: “I just wanted to say I love you I’m okay-“ Mom: “oh okay love you too”
Their phrases like eat more, come early, dont u need a money all of these are their love expression. They use it but, when we hear the in main words like "I love you" is so deep and heartouching
Instead of saying I love you back the parents also say come back home early or its cold outside.. Just because they dont say it doesn't mean they dont love them.. They obviously care and the love is within that
Saying “I love you too” isn’t the only way to express your love for people you know?? I told my mom that I love her one time and I haven’t said it in a while to her before that. She just laughed cuz she felt embarrassed since it’s been a long time since I told her that lol. Maybe the other parents were feeling the same way. Idk 🤷♀️ just a hunch.
i'm 15 and my mom died last year. until now, i have this feeling of regret of not saying i love you to her often. and i honestly can see that i'll bring this regret until i aged.
As someone who always felt uneasy around their parents and doesn't really know how to reciprocate affection, this made my cereal bowl full of tears instead of milk.
Saying I love you to asian parents be like: "Are you drunk?" "You need money?" "What do you want this time?" "You did something wrong?" "Are you okay? You're not suicidal right?" "Are you sick?" "Is this a prank?" "It's a lie. You better talk gracefully to me, do your chores if you really love me, your room is a mess! *endless lecture*"
How insecure are we, or how little confidence do we have that it costs us so much to say "I love you" to our parents? I also have a hard time saying it, and every time I do, I cry a little
i think because the simple word is so powerful and genuine and also because some ppl don't said it often but more than anything i think that many people around the world have problems with showing their feelings towards others because they are not taught from home how to be affectionate.
I think more than anything actions speaks louder than words. Likewise, that person will know that you truly love them even if you don't openly express it through words if you show it through your actions. I don't think it's necessarily being insecure but more of one's culture or how they are brought up. Doesn't mean that they don't say "I love you" or it's not a common thing to do but more on the fact there are other ways to show you love someone. Saying "I love you" in my opinion is just a simpler way to express how you feel about someone.
I’ve been living in this world for 18 years and in my memories there’s not even a single time I said ily to my mom and vice versa. Idk it’s just too hard and awkward to say it. But we both know we love and care for each other deeply
This made me cry. As an American usually I love you is reserved for family, however said more frequently than the Japanese culture. My mother died suddenly when I was a child. My family never leaves each other or hangs up the phone without saying I love you. I even tell my brother and sister in law I love you. Life is short.
Middle eastern and Asian don’t say “I love you” as much as Western parents, but they show it in actions. Carrying me for 9 long months inside her womb, a painful birth is “I love you”. Nights my mom took night shift to buy me things I wanted is “I love you”. Cooking for me in the middle of the night because I craved something is “I love you”. Giving food off her own spoon because I was still hungry is “I love you”. Small things they do everyday for you is “I love you”.
Watching this and looking back at the disrespectful things I’ve said to my mom is making me regret and cry but I still don’t have the courage to get up and open the door and walk two feet to my moms room and hug her. I know I’ll one day regret it but I don’t know what to do rn it’s just so hard
@@tangeriness I regret many things I did, when I realized I asked my mother for forgiveness and I said how much I love her and I think she is better now and I do too. Tell her how you feel, it's better to regret what you did than what you didn't.
I've always said "I love you" throughout my life. My mother and father also responded, and they showed it with their actions. I'm proud of myself for changing my parents' behavior
Must be nice to not be neglected in your childhood, beat on, yelled at and come out traumatized and fucked up with negative adulthood traits. I am severely jealous of people with parents who love them and support them and are there for them when they need it most. You must be doing so well in life...you probably have good social skills, a car, home, married, children, probably mature emotionally and no mental illness caused by childhood abuse. It hurts. Everything I lack.
@@BiggestHaterEVER there’s no need to trauma dump on someone bro. I’m sorry you’re going through that but talk to a therapist about it not a commenter on the internet
@@BiggestHaterEVER The day I saw this message, my face was purple. I get beaten up every time by my sister and I am always the one who is wronged by my family. But that still doesn't stop me from saying "I love you" to them, and they respond too. ( This does not apply to my sister , the only thing that binds her to me is that our parents are the same. ) moreover I am 16 years old. I don't own my car, my house, my kids, or anything for adults. Best regards, Aura.
@@BiggestHaterEVER yeah well not everyone’s life is good. I was never good enough for my parents hitting smacking screaming crying *dying* = my childhood. They are proud they changed there parents no need to tell them everything you’ve been through I’m sorry for your trauma things will hopefully get better as a person who experienced this I tend to stay on the bright side. You should too tho may be hard.
I noticed that even though a lot of parents didn't necessarily say the words "I love you" back, they said it in different ways like "have you eaten?" or "get home early tonight." Saying it in the best ways they know how.
Sometimes it's cultural. I grew up in west Africa where it's not the norm to say it like we see people saying in the west. We just knew our parents loved us based on what they did; the fact they they called and asked if we'd eaten or checked on us before they went to bed, paid tuition, fed, clothed and housed us...that's their way of saying it. Especially among men. I can't even picture a west african dad saying that to his son (or son to dad) the time I was growing up which was not long ago (millennial here). Tbh even now, I don't think it's common.
every asian kids to their parents: "I love you" also every asian parents after heard that: "how much money do you want?" . funny but this is so realistic lmao
hi i have something to tell you that you have to do. just say i love you to your parents and hug them and the more you say it the more they will think about you and know how much you love them and its really touching to them. mostly for the people who arent loved a lot, if their child says it every single day. you dont know how happy they will be. and how awarding it will be for you at the end. its all worth it.
For Asian cultures, I think it's sad that we can't even say I Love You casually. But that, in its way, is also why when it is said between parents and their children, it means so much more
Yesss! Though i am east asian, me and my parents do say “i love you” lots so i cant relate to lots of this. However i do know that we express love through different things! for example; food this may just be me i dunno
I disagree. On the opposite, I don't like those: "I love you, mom" "love you, too. Bye" kinda talks. "I love you" to me is supposed to be a very very very strong and serious expression because of the meanings and responsibilities behind it. I don't like people just use it like "hello" types of expression. Similar to, in a relationship, I would use "I like you" instead of "I love you" in most cases, unless I really think the girl in front of me is "the one".
As an Asian I think it's sad that parents in the west don't smack their kids when the kids do something wrong. Just saying.... the cultural difference doesn't mean it's good or bad. So when it comes to these kind of things, there's nothing to be "sad" about really :)
I've lost my both parents, my mom recently. I never say I love you to them. We always showed our love by loyalty, forgiveness and acts. They were always caring for me while I was growing. We were always trying to be happy. I'm still a student and it is difficult to know i have to continue without them. I hope you will enjoy every moment with your parents, because they will always be proud of you.
Stay strong, they are with you in every step that you do! Make them proud by rewarding them for all the LOVE, hard work and sacrifice they made for YOU! I know you can do it!

How Asians say I love you:
"Did you eat yet?"
"Make sure you eat."
"Wanna eat?"
Yeah. We don't usually say "I love you" to show our love. We show it with our actions and how we care and treasure each other. I can't say I LOVE YOU when I really love someone (parent, friend, partner) not because I'm shy, in fact it's not my love language. I show them with my actions.

Today was my exam result
Maybe that is why I felt so awkward while the entire video was going on
@Emilio Franco no that's not how it is

@@truelovewontwait correctly said!!

Its not hard for me I say that to my dad because I know when he needs it because he is going through deppresion
这个视频让我哭了。我妈妈已经睡在我身边,我什至不能对她说“我爱你”,因为我不知道如何不哭。

Some parents think their children say this just to get money. This makes the children to not say it at all.
eh?

I’ve been living in this world for 18 years and in my memories there’s not even a single time I said ily to my mom and vice versa. Idk it’s just too hard and awkward to say it. But we both know we love and care for each other deeply
SAMEEEE!!!
bRo samee IDK WHY
Same here w my parents :’>
I wish that was us but my mom gives no shots about me 😭😭
absolutely
Ha! That's what Swedish/Finnish people say!
No, i am Middle eastern and i almost say i love you everyday to my mom and she says i love you too even if i dont say i love you to her.
this made me tear up
Watching this and looking back at the disrespectful things I’ve said to my mom is making me regret and cry but I still don’t have the courage to get up and open the door and walk two feet to my moms room and hug her.

I’m sorry for your trauma things will hopefully get better as a person who experienced this I tend to stay on the bright side. You should too tho may be hard.
I noticed that even though a lot of parents didn't necessarily say the words "I love you" back, they said it in different ways like "have you eaten?" or "get home early tonight." Saying it in the best ways they know how.
Totally agree 👍🏽
For me it’s hard to say “I love you” to my parents
same
Same bro
Tell them before it's over
Sometimes it's cultural.
Armyyyy💜
Sons and daughters be like.
"I want to tell her I love her, but I can't."
I want to tell you that it's not that you can't do it, it's will you do it.

Children who grew up in China, do you guys know how much courage it takes to say to their parents “I love you?” It’s hard to express yourself.
But any reason ??
@@whosannieanyways5067 we don’t really express our feelings SO directly. It is pretty shy. Very shy.

funny but this is so realistic lmao
hi i have something to tell you that you have to do. just say i love you to your parents and hug them and the more you say it the more they will think about you and know how much you love them and its really touching to them. mostly for the people who arent loved a lot, if their child says it every single day. you dont know how happy they will be. and how awarding it will be for you at the end. its all worth it.

For Asian cultures, I think it's sad that we can't even say I Love You casually. But that, in its way, is also why when it is said between parents and their children, it means so much more
Yesss! Though i am east asian, me and my parents do say “i love you” lots so i cant relate to lots of this. However i do know that we express love through different things! for example; food
this may just be me i dunno
i get irritated when people throw ILY all over the place though. almost devaluing the phrase.
Same in Russian culture
I disagree. On the opposite, I don't like those:
"I love you, mom"
"love you, too. Bye"
kinda talks.
All the best for future..You'll do great and make them proud👍
I love you Argentblanc... Hear this words like your parents are saying. Smile😊
Sorry for ur loss

Stay strong, they are with you in every step that you do! Make them proud by rewarding them for all the LOVE, hard work and sacrifice they made for YOU! I know you can do it!
