You should NEVER use that plastic spacer with a disk, its only to be used when no disk is installed (rim brakes) it is to prevent damage to the coating on the hub from the bolts, and to stop the bolts from going too deep in to the hub

Hey Steve I never heard of Kirby build kits so far what I seen are the best conversion kits that I've seen so far I'd sure like to try one out one day you're doing a great job Steve keep it on
Fantastic video, simple explanation. Andys conversion kits are fantastic. I was looking for a kit for my Mate bike, on Aliexpress or Ebay but, Kirby kits are the best with the warranty , great customer service, emails answered straight away by Jason Wang, thanks a lot. Going to buy fat tire 20 inch kit next month pay day. Can't wait. All the best to all of you.
Nice to see someone fitting the torque washers correctly on the inside, just file a little off the front side of the dropout then it'll fit in without a hammer 🔨 😉 ,it needs to come out easily at the side of the road incase you get a puncture .
Not sure what mean are you suggesting filling the dropout? I'd rather have it tighter and tap in with a plastic mallet. The tighter the fit the better. The mallet isn't needed for the dropout tightness anyway it's more likely the dropout width and spacers being tight filling wouldn't do anything to help that just loosen the axle fitment which isn't good! It's a gentle tap that doesnt damage anything to ensure its fully down as far as it can go. Steve
@@DudeStuff Yes you file the front end of the drop out where the most metal is 17:03 where your left index finger is,,only a few points of a millimetre /0.2mm ,so it glides in smoothly.I been fitting these kits since 2013 and if used daily they pick up punctures because of the weight even with kevlar guard tyres. 🙏 so much easier to fix a puncture at the roadside with the wheel out, Ian 🤠🤟🇬🇧
Thanks for sharing.. here in New Zealand we have no speed limit but we are limited to a 300w motor but it's not being policed & popo wouldn't know the difference if we were to stick a 300w sticker on a bigger motor..
A generally good guide. I did a Yose Power 350w conversion on a Scott Sportster hybrid bike. That has an integrated controller in the battery mount which looks a lot cleaner. I’m guessing it’s not possible to do that with higher wattage conversions because the controller needs to be bigger to cope with the extra load? I did fit the triangular bag anyway. Excellent for a puncture repair kit, a few tools and a mini air compressor for roadside puncture fixes. I personally fitted the cadence sensor to get some exercise and extend the range. Probably less likely to attract attention from the plod if you’re pedalling a bit. I didn’t do the brake cut outs though for similar reasons and because my gear shift and brake levers are integrated. Thumb throttle is useful for getting away if you stop in too high a gear and ….15mph looks like warp speed😂
Yeah that's right you generally have smaller less powerful controllers built in to battery bases. Grinn make a reasonable one but they can be a bit off with tech support and warranty on my experience. Plus you can only use their over priced displays with it, their ugly as hell and too over spec'd I don't need to programme throttle curve on my handle bars for 300 quid
Great info. I did a DIY conversation to an old junk bike and love it. I'm with you on the PAS and at first I disconnected it but later I wired a couple of micro switches so I can switch on the speed limiter and turn on the PAS and it's just right when I want to get more exercise and pedal at a comfortable speed of about 12mph, or I can turn off the limiter and the PAS for just tooling around town on it doing errands. Mine is a front wheel hub so a little nose heavy 🙄. Next time I'll use a back wheel hub with a cassette like you do 👍. 10ah batt gets me about 16-20 miles if I'm conservative so I have a 20ah coming in the mail to be the main battery, and an A/B switch so I can throw this current one on the back rack and have it as a secondary to run longer trips. Thanks for all your tips though man 😎👍
Are regular (separate) controllers better than those controllers that come integrated into the battery mount? Which is more reliable and future proof? Thanks.
Generally, separate ones are slightly higher amp output if we're talking average prices kits. Grinn do a higher power integrated controller but the plug connectors are huge and ugly and you get no display or the option of only using their own ugly overpriced display nothing basic and cheap. Possibly better cooling on extremal controller depending how you mount it.
What display is that? The one that comes with the current kit is not just a color LCD and not a full-color TFT like the one you have there. BTW thanks for the discount code 🙂

Hi, brilliant and very informative, the only thing that I would say from experience is that the bottle holder isn’t designed for taking the wait of a 3 or more kg battery. I personally think it’s better to drill thru the frame and bolt it. This is from experience of my first build, I’m on my third now and u have given me alot of tips, so thanks, so I hope maybe I’ve given you one too?. Those bottle holders just strip their own threads
Nice video Dude, although I will say why not leave the nut on the axle for protection against the mallet / floor, if the threads do become damaged you just unscrew the nut and it reforms the thread. I've been watching your uploads for over a year now after I was forcibly reintroduced to cycling after a break of over 27 years, I've converted an old Giant hybrid bike with a Bafang mid mount kit which I now use to commute 4 miles each way, covered about 2,500 miles in a little over 12 months. I have a trek marlin 5 gen 3 29in and my frame does not have that’s big place to put the wheel it’s just a circle can anyone help? Would it still work?
Steve that was a great introduction on how to do rear wheel hub. I build my first bike by watching you. But I'm going to try to do the rear wheel hub. Great information on how to build it. Keep this great work up. You are the Haynes manual on electric bikes 👍
Shame they can't spell "Manual" properly on their website, joking aside these are a good kit, bit pricey though, I managed the exact same set-up for no more than £670. All quality parts, and no it ain't a cheap battery that I bought, the battery cost the most (52v 20Ah - kit was a Voilamart, all stuff bought from e-bay). One point I think should be said, it makes sense to fit torque arms on both sides. That's what I've done anyway. Nice video, you do a good job of explaining the fitting process, for anybody doing this patience is a virtue as it's best to really take your time and do it right.
My question is (having had the kit on for a couple months) when adding the spacers onto the wheel and stretching the frame out to fit it in, is that not pulling the Caliper mount away from the hub by 10mm or so. Do you not need to space to disk further out due to this, haven’t been able to get a brake running without rubbing or schreaching due to not being aligned correctly.
In regards to the locking washer with notch. I measured my frame at 135mm however AFTER I received the kit I read elsewhere that the 2000W kit is 137mm. So I purchased based on 135mm confirmed. ( seen this 4 different places as well as the instructions). Tried 3 different bike frames and it is NEVER going in with these spacers inside the dropouts. (haven't even mounted a cassette yet) Can I use these locking spacers on the outside of the dropouts then tighten nut on them?
@DudeStuff I have a Jamis Durango hardtail 8spd and a Jamis Dakar full suspension 10spd converted to 8spd. As well as the Giant Rainer hardtail 9spd. I have it in the Giant with the notched spacers on the outside. The disk is very close to the frame but it is in. I would need to fine tune the caliper mounting . But the Jamis full suspension is the one is was destined for. There is lots of room in the rear triangle (actually fit a 203mm disk in there with room to spare) but still tight in the drop outs. I think all the frames are aluminum so prying to much is asking for future stress cracks on our crappy roads/trials. Basically the notched washer is installed on the outside of the drop out and the notch will still engage the dropout, so as long as everything else will fit/line up it should be equal results in the end? No? The wheel is actually centered in the frame almost perfect but I think getting the derailleur and cogs setup will be the next fun time. Trying to locate my spare 8spd cassette and not having much luck. I am actually messing with this right now so thanks for the fast reply. @@DudeStuff
Question would the UPPBattery 52V 1800W 28.8ah work fine with this 2000W motor ? And would the battery just run the motor at 1800W or would the motor still try to pull 2000W of power ? Maybe it might over load the battery ? and could i use a 60v battery and controller or too much for the motor ? Great videos mate!
@@joshuaMalloy my battery also tops out around 1800w of output when fully charged, not a problem for my 1500w rear hub motor. Trying to find cells that can output above 2000w gets expensive quite quickly lol. After this winter I'm gonna try upgrading my whole bike to 72v but no idea if this generic voilamart motor could handle it as I'm only running 52v through it right now.
Great job but a bit of advice is whenever you’re knocking a threaded axle put the nut on and hit the nut this will stop you from damaging the threads cheers mate 👍👏
Great video as always mate. Quick question - I have a Carrera ( one of the Halfords bikes ) so only about £400 worth of bike. Is it worth putting this kit on it ( I see it's pretty much double the price of the bike I have) or is the bike not good enough quality and I need a better bike to make it worthwhile?
I think it depends on what you want to get. I'm going to play with a $100 ful sus 'department-store' bike conversion/restoration project. Maybe it won't be super safe for the road, so maybe I'd upgrade it later. For $1000+ I think I could find some used factory-made ebikes (mid-drive and battery hidden in the tube).

So i got a weird question so i got a 29inch mountain bike with the 3x8 shifters and my derailers are trashed if i was to have this kit installed would i still need to have the derailers fixed or is there no way around that?
after riding it for 3500 kms the cycle chain seems to break and pads of disc brakes wear and fade, its best to mod to fit a motorbike sprocket and chain and full hydraulic motorbike brakes
My kits from kirby didnt come with the metal around the motor cable to protect the wires, So the wire got cut when a screw come loose, I had to get it fixed hall sensor! What can i use to protect this steve ?
Thinking of getting the kit because it looks to be one of the best looking wise one but is it generally too speed of 15 mph or is that for video purposes only👀
Hey Buddy, Im new to your channel, and I have to say that you're doing a great job in explaining things. Just a few questions to ask. 1. I can't see the £40 discount code nore the link? 2. There are several restrictive laws on ebike speed limits but surely a 2000W 20ah ebike kit can do a tone more than 15mph? 3. If I want to apply a front motor wheel hub and a rear motor wheel hub. Can I do that to a single battery and a single controller unit? 4. How much would that cost roughly because from memory, I recall you done that to one of mountain 29" black bike with a combined power of 5000w? I hope you can help me out with my questions and give me a little guidance. Thanks, buddy.
Just ordered this kit so it's great to see a build with it. Thanks a lot for this and the dudestuff £40 discount. Wiring looks much tidier than the previous kit and the controller and battery are clear upgrades. Went with the Vitus Nucleus 27 VR you did a previous build with and it's going for a steal at £325 on Black Friday deal. Can't wait for it all to arrive and have fun building and riding my first Ebike conversion thanks to the inspiriation from watching your channel. Cheers! Well worth a sub👌
Do you need a torque arm on such a setup?? I've seen on multiple sources that a torque arm is crucial on a 2kw ebike, but I've never seen it even mentioned on this chanel
I have mentioned it several times in the past but then not many people will have watched all the videos I've made. I would recommend fitting one on anything above 1000w but as I've mentioned in other videos, fitment of the wheel fully in the dropouts is most crucial for people relatively new to diy ebike the worst things I've seen are from poor wheel fitment. I see a torque arm as a secondary resort to correctly dropping a wheel fully into the dropouts.
Hi Steve, seeking advice....i have a Carrera Hustle with 27.5 wheels, 21 speed, do you think this could be a good candidate for the Kirby 2000w conversion? I was thinking buy a 29er with maybe 10 gears but don't want unnecessary expense, and then again i don't want to waste time converting an unsuitable bike. What do you reckon? Cheers
You should NEVER use that plastic spacer with a disk, its only to be used when no disk is installed (rim brakes) it is to prevent damage to the coating on the hub from the bolts, and to stop the bolts from going too deep in to the hub

So the 1800w battery just couldn't power it sufficiently @@JudeTheRUclipsPoopersubscribe
Hey Steve…great video again..what amp is the controller in the kit…?
Amazing work mate
I’ve tried clicking the kirbebike link in your description but it don’t open for some reason
Is anyone else having this problem.?
Thanks! Link works for me try another browser or device
Cheers.. Very helpful and well explained
Great build helpfull hints and yes 15mph looked fast nudge nudge 😉 😉 lol
This little detail cracked me up and made me love this channel 😂
15mph is weak
In this video you show how to fit everything but on the website there isn’t back wheel conversion it’s only front wheel any help?
Great job but a bit of advice is whenever you’re knocking a threaded axle put the nut on and hit the nut this will stop you from damaging the threads cheers mate 👍👏
Never had any issue using a plastic mallet but wouldn't hurt to fit the nut to be extra cautious

Great video. You're very thurough in your directions. Have you done a mid crank bike conversion?

Hi DudeStuff,
Hope You’re Doing Well,
I Have A Boardman 8.8 MHT
With 12 Gears.
I’m Looking to Get An eBike Conversion Kit From KirbeBike
The Thing Is, Don’t Know Which Wheel To Order
29” (7 Speed Freewheel Thread) Or
29” Cassette (8s, 9s Or 10s)
I’m A Bit Confused As I Am New To This Sort
I Was Thinking Neither Will Fit
Any Help Will Be Appreciated
And Thanks For Your Effort On Making This Very Helpful Video 😊
Order cassette you can fit sometimes 10 maybe 11 speed max, get bike shop to block off 1 or 2 gears on derailleur
@@DudeStuff thank you bro
Great information Steve. Getting one of these kits soon for a project 🤜👍
hi my only concern is my discs are a central locking ring , have you done a video of you changing one over to a new electric back wheel ?
great video otherwise
andy
Just found you and your videos are mint
Really good advice’s
24:22 why do you call it the jubilee clip??
That's what they call a hose clamp in England.. no idea why 😂
Well you're gonna say kirbe is the best battery company, you're part of their team! 😂
Nice build mate, just built one myself at home with all the kit from Alibaba and a bike from halfords, bargain for £700, so much fun aren't they
Ideal for my commute to work

Another great video Steve 👍
So i got a weird question so i got a 29inch mountain bike with the 3x8 shifters and my derailers are trashed if i was to have this kit installed would i still need to have the derailers fixed or is there no way around that?
Well it's not going to fix your derailleur lol.. but if you use throttle only and it stays in 1 gear ok you probably don't need the gears much at all
Silly question will a trek dual sport 3 2022 be able to fit this kit?
Great watch Steve
after riding it for 3500 kms the cycle chain seems to break and pads of disc brakes wear and fade, its best to mod to fit a motorbike sprocket and chain and full hydraulic motorbike brakes
My kits from kirby didnt come with the metal around the motor cable to protect the wires,
So the wire got cut when a screw come loose,
I had to get it fixed hall sensor!
What can i use to protect this steve ?
Thinking of getting the kit because it looks to be one of the best looking wise one but is it generally too speed of 15 mph or is that for video purposes only👀
Can I fit this battery on a Carrara vengeance M frame it looks to small
Love the videos what a nice bike
Great work Steve excellent video 👍
Hey Buddy,
Im new to your channel, and I have to say that you're doing a great job in explaining things.
Cant believe theres still a marked forth non integrated controllers.
The integrated onces offer a much cleaner appearance
Another honest vid , if your ever Yarmouth way I'll stand you a pint or two
Just ordered this kit so it's great to see a build with it.
Appreciate it Thanks and vitus vr rides lovely I've done a few of them good bikes.
325, how much was the total kit used including battery? i just spent 850
Watched this several times so i can be ready to fit mine when i order the kit then thought what the hell ill just join the raffall.
Good man nice one 🙂
@@DudeStuff Thanks for the super fast reply, I'll fit one just in case, maybe on each side.
Im still learning.I like your videos ,they are very informative and funny to....Thanks for teaching me,,

Hi Steve new sub here I love the content can I ask were I can pick up one of these controllers thanks 😊
No lights connector on this controller ? 😕
My kit did not come with those washers and spacers, where can I get them from?
Are there any reasonably priced MTBs u recommend for conversions? I’ve tried about 5 different ones and none had a dropout wider than 135mm
I found the 1kw-1.5kw hub motors fit easily into 135mm, so do you need 2kw if so it is harder
Brilliant,love the speed test,lol,😂
Hi Steve, seeking advice....i have a Carrera Hustle with 27.5 wheels, 21 speed, do you think this could be a good candidate for the Kirby 2000w conversion? I was thinking buy a 29er with maybe 10 gears but don't want unnecessary expense, and then again i don't want to waste time converting an unsuitable bike. What do you reckon? Cheers
