This exam is perhaps the most unfair exam of all. For people who have autism and literally would rather sit on a pin then speak in public this exam is practically impossible. Classic government not caring about the special cases. The exam system is broken.
THIS!!!!!
Yeah I’m autistic and followed this advice and luckily scraped a pass today… I feel like mine should have been higher because I used so much techniques and looked at people and was formal. I thought my responses to the questions were good too :/ in my eyes I don’t see how I did it not good enough for s merit as someone in my class stuttered and even said they lost where they were at one point and they got a merit, they used no techniques either. Also mine wasn’t recorded to my teacher can basically tick what she wants idk how it works tbh but she doesn’t get on with me
Bro all you gotta do is speak for 5-10 mins

@@JessKwart I’m doing mine in under a week and I’m scared 😂 my topic is why I think English Literature should not be a compulsory gcse, what was yours?
I got a distinction 🎉 I would definitely recommend Udoka’s tips to be as confident as u can. Always make eye contact with your audience and sound as though you know what you’re talking about. Another tip from myself would be to use ambitious vocabulary here and there. My teacher started ticking boxes when I used ambitious vocab. Good luck 👍🏼
What was ur topic
I got a distinction as well 🥳
sameee
I used ambitious vocabulary, decent range of techniques, memorized the speech and made eye contact with my audience, i did struggle in the questions part but i made a very good observation at the end which was
"we would be speaking another language if it wasnt for (the subject of the topic) and
"the moral of the story is dont assume things to quickly"
surely thats a merit and maybe aiming for distinction
2:33 this is so true because the year before me who did their speeches wrote about how tomatoes are evil and someone talked about sand and they both got a distinction. confidence is key. i dont have any confidence but ill just *fake it till i make it*
edit: this is a few weeks after i did my speaking exam and i got a distinction! 😄😄thank you for this vid i was so scared abt how i was going to speak infront of my class because the majority of my class recorded theirs and sent them to our teacher privately by email so only about 4 out of 30 students ended up speaking infront of the class and i was one of them 😩✋🏼 im so happy tho that i got a distinction. i wrote my speech revolving about climate change and how we should do something about it. Good luck to everyone doing their speeches in the future < 3
Im thinking about doing mine about climate change cause it is something thats affecting all of us rn. Im also glad we only have to do ours infront of our teachers cause my confidence is horrible but ive gotta prepare because it is after the easter break

I got my results today and I got distinction. My advice is just write a well written speech and deliver it clearly. You don't have to memorise it, I certainly didn't, but try to look up from your cards some of the time. It's really not that bad.
The tips were really good as a person who also got a distinction in the speaking too..

since I've missed out on most of school due to lockdown, i'm currently in year 9 and is doing this speech soon, thanks for the help, structuring it, questions and confidence are perhaps one of the more important ones, as they could help someone get a merit or even a distinction.

I just got told I have to do this aaaAAh thankie so much for this video!
Thanks for this mate. I just got a distinction, this helped massively in me getting that grade
dont supose you still have your speach?
My school has given us 2 days, and aswell as that its infront of everyone In my class. Idk what to write about and I'm panicking, omg I'm doomed.
Rule number 1 is don't panic. You have to tell yourself that, frankly, most of your class doesn't care what you're talking about and will immediately forget about it upon leaving the class.
What everyone else says is write about something you're passionate about, but it's very true. Might take a bit to realize but as soon as you do you'll know.
What is something in society that makes you angry? Something unjust? Imagine a group of your friends are talking about a topic. What topic would you join in on if you heard them talking about it? Mines tomorrow at 9 AM and haven't even started writing it, and it's currently 9 PM. I'm planning on writing about immigration and the misconceptions surrounding it, because hearing people talking about "those bloody immigrants" annoys me.
Just don't worry, nobody cares, and it doesn't count towards any grades or anything. Just write _something_ remotely interesting and get it over with. Be confident, and convince yourself it will go well, because it will.

Not sure about confidence, cause I lacked so much confidence and got a distinction today. Just use variety of ethos, pathos and logos in your speech and you should get that. Also write a lot! THANK YOU
this was so helpful !! i managed to get a distinction bcs of u
ahh well done!! got any tips?
@@lildoodl ofc bae,
TLDR - practice, passion, posture , powerpoint
1) If you haven't picked your topic already, make sure it's something you're genuinely passionate about ( I did mine on legalizing weed lol) If you're interested, you'll seem interesting
2) Practice makes perfect
I cannot say the number of students that never once even bothered to go over their PowerPoint or flashcards or whatever and literally winged it - one person changed their entire notion halfway through the speech (he did get a distinction but only because he was kicking it with the teacher lol)
but literally, in front of the mirror, make sure you can speak confidently until the words naturally start flowing out of your mouth
3) Be confident,
This is just your english class, and it's not the end of the world if you mess up a bit rather than take no risks and have a totally boring speech, so put on your best face and rock that stage
4) If you're allowed using slides like google slides or PowerPoint are just so much more engaging for the audience (but make sure they don't take away from the quality of your speech
5) lil bonus tip - don't drink 24 hours before the speech lol
my best friend took a shot of vodka right before his exam because he thought it would give him 'courage' or smth so stupid please don't do what he did - he passed but also passed out lol
GOOD LUCK HON
@@ragd0ll667 THANK YOUUU, ive got mine next week and ill be sure to update you how it went and then if i remember when i get my grade back ill also update you then if you want heh.

what was your topic?
Topic?
… I did these and got only “pass” I don’t know what I did wrong. I haven’t stuttered, I was formal, used a range of techniques, made eye contact and walked around. Also I had a range of statistics and thought I answered the questions good enough. Someone in my class kept stuttering and even forgot where they were in their speech at one point and used no techniques at all and got a merit so I’m thinking it’s favouritism 😔
Did you ask why? Maybe you kept lookin down or didn't use enough ambitious vocab?
I'm in year 11 and we couldn't do our speech last year because of coronavirus. Now we have just been told that we will have to do them on a zoom call because we aren't allowed in school. What would you recommend (I think we have to have cameras off).

I have my English speaking exam in few weeks. I have an accent and i m really worried if i will fail because of it.
Will my accent effect my grades? 😭
Our speech had to be on a topic related to one of the themes in the poem 'My Last Duchess' (in the anthology), and I did mine on gender inequality in the past and present. Somehow I only got a merit despite my presentation going really well. Like, not once did I have to read from my cue cards, I was confident, and overall I felt like it went better than a Merit. Even my classmates were saying that it was really good.
The other thing was that I didn't even prepare questions beforehand. I had no idea what the questions would be.
that's unfortunate. I'm sure you did well though

hi! My speaking and listening exam is tomorrow. I'm also in year 9; teachers decided to take some stress off year 10/11. I'm really worried because we are timed but when I revise, my speech comes out very quickly which makes me hard to understand. One thing I would recommend (based off my friends and my own research) is emphasising the important things. This allows the speech to be more passionate and engage readers further. It can also slow you down if you have the same issue as me Wish me luck guys!💖
Same mines in a 3 weeks and im also in y9 wish you look im doing climate change but im struggling to implement good vocabulary in my answers
@@just_moon-- goodluck with this !! if you dont mind me asking, what specifically are you doing for climate change? because if you choose to mention charities or organisations that have projects to help if it is simple you can say that it 'isn't designed to be ostentatious' (meaning it isn't designed to impress or be showy & pretentious) 'but is created in a simplistic manner to provoke people into realising they can easily help fight against climate change without being blasé or impassive.' (blasé being french for indifferent & impassive meaning to not show emotion) .
If you wanted to go further and recommend different ways to have an impact you could say there are 'copious' methods, (meaning abundant in quality or a lot of) :)
@@huashueyh Thanks for the support seraphim my speech is currently about the effects climate change already has on the UK,the ways we can prevent this and the many benefits preventing climate change will have on you and your family. I've done this to sort of try and create a sort of original speech that does not feel copied and the same as the many other speeches out there about climate I've also emphasised that you don't have to be an extreme climate activist in order to help reverse the effects of climate change in the UK
@@huashueyh If you don't mind me asking what topic did you do or will be doing for the speaking and listening assessment
@@just_moon-- your idea is really good especially if you are passionate about it and have done previous research which is most likely, i think you can definitely implement unique vocabulary into it like the aforementioned examples especially since you mentioned how you don't have to be an extreme activist ! also i dont mind at all, i'm doing my spoken language exam in a few weeks and i have chosen to discuss universal basic income and how it can challenge financial inequality but also the detriments it may have on society, therefore like a kaleidoscope of positives and negatives - however if you have time i would recommend researching climate change dissertations and collecting inspiration as they are higher tier (college level) and will provide further understanding and unique ideas for your speech :)
