- This Receiver was already partially restored. Here, we finish replacing capacitors, replace the speaker switch, repair and restore the cabinet and finish all the repair issues with the preamp and tuner. It was a lot of work, but the receiver turned out beautiful. Enjoy!
I found this model setting on top of a bag of trash on the curb several years ago. Never forget how heavy it was. About 52 lbs., I believe. It was cosmetically excellent and played well when I first found it, but now, needs a complete restoration. Think I'll be working on a 1972, Pioneer SX 626 (also found in e-waste) before I even think about looking into this SX 1050 monster. Thanks for this fascinating video.
I had one of these. Bought it new at Luskin's in Miami. It rocked pushing some big Altecs. Man I wish I still had it. You sir are doing a great service to mankind bringing these awesome amps back to life.
I scored an SX- 1050 today !! Woohoo !!!
I had one in my garage I'm cleaning it up now. Its a sx 1080
simply fascinating ! I just got a SX-1080 Can wait to get it !
Alfredo Ruiz
An Eico Reisitor-Capacitor Comparator and Bridge Tester. Way to go. I love mine. Very dependable. Thank you for the time to make this video.
That right there, is Beautiful ! And well done ! Your patience has really paid off. I'm starting work on an SX-737 very soon thats just not sounding great anymore. I think I'll begin with cleaning all controls, and then go from there one section at a time. It's going to take a while. Thanks for the great explanations !
I'm an electronics tech, and you still had my head swimming when doing the tuner adjustments. I've just never been in this line of work. Most of my experience is with OCR and digital signals.
Back in the late 90's when I was a teen a buddy gave me this unit. My mom made me get rid of it because it was LOUD. Damn I wish I still had it.
These units can go for in the thousands....what did you do with the unit?
You Sir are a dieing breed... Out of all the stereo guys I knew back in the day, and there were a lot of them, there's only one guy left who still knows how to work on these
I miss my 1050 awesome unit.
Nice video, thanks.
First time i have seen a tuner beeing trimmed, very interesting.
Subscribed, for hopefully more electronics repair videos :-)

Nice video, working on a Pioneer SX-1000TW currently. Just brought back the audio after a complete recap of power supply and rework of main power amp board. Preformed bias of outputs after symmetry adjust of push pull driver stage as well. The audio sounds fantastic. However I’m experiencing AM and FM tuner issues. The AM tuner has a shrill noise in it and appears dead. The FM tuner works but the audio is approx 1/4 the level of using another aux audio input source. The tuner has a max tuner panel gauge that when FM is tuned to max signal, audio disappears, half scale brings it back to best audio output and clarity. Unfortunately I don’t own nice tuner injection alignment equipment as you do. I do have a dual trace 100 meg scope, function generator and a signal tracer injector box with RF/Audio mode switch, as well as a vintage analog RF generator as well as a vintage sweep marker generator for old tv tuner alignment. However I have never needed to do a tuner alignment before. Therefore never learned how. However none of my Archaic equipment has db level set points and other precision controls as your tester does. I’m thinking of probing the audio output of IF board into the multiplexer board, and multiplexer board output to see if audio level is being lost in it. I’m hoping I can find a fault issue that is common to both tuners, or at least the FM section. I will be checking tuner boards +B voltages and the like. Hopefully I can at least get the FM section working nicely for my customer. I just wish I had the knowledge and equipment you have for dealing with tuners. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

, as you say the older equipment is much better, the closest thing I could find is my Harmon/Karden stereo amp rated at @ 120 per 4 channel and a subwoofer output. it seems to be very good at driving 4 Acoustic Research tower speakers with 10 inch woofers, 2 5 inch midranges drivers and a 2 inch done tweeter.
they sound amazing .
I'm also using a vintage 1970s ADC EQUILIZER SPECTRUM ANALYZER.
Very good quality sound, especially for a new stereo receiver.
Wish I knew somebody like you here to look at my 1050. With the TONE switch ON, my left channel has a distortion that sounds like the wind outside can make on a microphone.
Right? Wish I had somebody like this fellow to study under/learn from. I get frustrated that I cant take a skematic or repair manual, and know how to read the damned thing and understand it enough to know where to go, or what to try first
There are a couple of restoration and electronic repair shops near me, but they charge upwards of $80 an hour. to repair vintage equipment.
You shouldn't have to be wealthy, just to have working equipment from the '70's. Alot of my older gear gets sold, to keep enough extra cash around for keeping my faborite components operating properly, and keep up with routine maintenance.
Great stuff, Tony. Lovin' the vintage gear. Suggestion for a video...what are the considerations for selecting modern transistors to replace the out of production versions?
Keep 'em comin' !
Interesting video. I own 2 of these and they are great sounding units.
Soft start circuits are essential for any DIY Power Amp projects. Basically its just a time-delay (capacitor based) relay driver circuit. You can find some on e-bay but they don't use very robust relays.
Very cool receiver love your video's
I have one of these 1050s and I also call it “the big boy” 😄
Good job, I've got a 1050 I bought new about '74 which needs some work, no output last I checked. I hope whoever buys it at action when I'm dead knows what they purchased. If I repaired it, it would just sit anyways.
Hi Tony, At 2:21 in this video, I see that the phono pre-amp section has polystyrene caps. I just did a complete recap of a Kenwood KA-7100. When I did the pre-amp stage, I had to replace two of the 8200pf polystyrene caps because they were physically damaged (showed stress fractures and cracks). The only polystyrenes I could find that matched the pf were axial lead and 630V. The replacements were much larger and had to be mounted above the other components. I covered the long leads with heatshrink to prevent a possible short. When I tested the amp after repairing that section, I found I had white noise when set to phono, but total silence when set to tuner/aux. These observations occurred with no input signal and max volume. My bad was not to make the same test before I recapped that section, so I don't know if I introduced the noise by changing those poly caps or if it was already there. Is it possible that I could have made the pre-amp noisier by installing those new caps, or should I look for noisy transistors? Thank you!
Kemet makes a film capacitor, part number MMK5822J50J01L4 that should work just fine in that circuit. They are very small and rated at 50VDC. Such things weren't around at the time of those amps and the only low noise non-ceramic caps at the time were polystyrene. I would also look at the transistors in the phono stage. If they are the least bit noisy, you will really hear it down the line. Hope this helps.
It helps immensely Tony! Thank you very much for giving me this information. I am learning SO much from watching your videos. Keep up the great work.
I got the p sx-2700 want keep playing fade. out
I usually just trash the old particle board cabinet and build a new one from solid walnut.
Fantastic vid! Have a SX1050 performs suburb! Only thing is the balance pod is "scratchy" on the right channel. What product do you use to clean it up? thx in advance.
wow that was great to watch how can i send you my stuff and do you turntables
Hi
I just want to mention that I really enjoy your channel.
I just pick up the SX 780 unit from yard sale. The unit was dirty but has power on it.
I have a question, the balance knob is not working. It is just not responding well. There is no in between, when I turn the knob. It goes on and off like a switch. It should change the output gradually but it is not. I also noticed that the right channel VU meter is slightly weaker than left channel.
I do not have equipment to test it out, like pro, but I notice slight different in the sound, when I put head phone.
Do you think it is issue with balance knob or just Vu meter?
If you have any suggestion or tool that I can use like multi-meter (to check the output) Please let me know.
TY.
The potentiometers are dirty and need Deoxit sprayed into them like he did/does on every piece he restores...I hope this helps if you haven't already figured it out.
How much would you charge for this service?
Could you please advise me of what type of 10 amp fuse to purchase for this model?
I will be putting together a SX-1050 soon as my donor is currently a basket case.
Thanks!
nice how did you keep it so clean
They can be dangerous, but tube stuff is worse. I repair tube amps every now and then. You must be careful. I just restored an old turntable for my own use. I love records. Analog sound is great. It is nice to get an old piece of vintage audio gear and restore it to it's former glory. I prefer not to throw any away.
I am looking for some parts for an sx-5590 black face version of the sx-1250 .. muting switch and 2 knobs that are used on muting switch and other switches , volume knob and bass tone switch (5 position) and knob .... after that its getting a full recap and alignment I need 1 more piece of test gear a multiplex signal generator .. have lots of test gear for doing ham equipment could really use a leakage tester as well I have an sx980 I need to go through as well its in the same shape as this 1050 your working on but I can tell by sound caps are getting bad . starting to sound hollow
Hi xraytonyb, my name is ted, i have a question, i am working on a vintage 1980 to 81 pioneer sx-780 receiver i have to replace both power packs and two resistors, now the resistors that are in the receiver are square and say "0.22 ohm k" at "02 watt" with two squiggly connectors that go into the board next to the power packs witch are the stk-0050 darlingtons the ones i found are .22 ohm 2 watt Sprague they are the round type "will these work" in place of the originals please let me know i would really appreciate it, i can't find the original type that are in the receiver, thanks ted
Are you still working on stereos and where are you located?
hey got a question so I have a sx 1080 I let a friend borrow it a few yrs back and he plugged a aux cord into the phono 2 slot and since then the left side has no output. now being who I am I didnt get super pissed at him. but I was super pissed. the question I have is what might have blown on it is it a costly repair I bought this thing for like 350 like 10 yrs ago and love it
also this unit hasnt been plugged in since then
Lots of possibilities for what could be wrong. I would first plug in some headphones and see if the tuner/tape/aux/phono inputs work. If they do, then the problem is most likely in the power amp section. If no sound in headphones, I would look at preamp or tone control sections.
Would love to actually seen you troubleshoot some of those bad transistors.
Can you repair my SX1050, poor contacts on front controls, occasional speaker goes out, or gets distorted, push in the filter buttons several times and speaker comes back
Hi Tony how can I correct very stiff tuning on my sx1280.oiling shaft and standing on back didn’t help ? Guessing the shaft needs to be cleaned and polished but don’t know how. Thx
Do you have a list of capacitors to replace?
Where are you located and what do you charge for an inspection of another 1050?
Unfortunately, I don't do a lot of jobs because of my busy schedule. I like to restore equipment and sometimes will put it up for sale on eBay. If I decide to take on some outside jobs, I will put a post on this channel to let you know. Thanks for the question!
eBay name is barbandtonyb
Hello Tony:
When you talk about ideling current, you measure it in volts, instead of amps.
Why?
Thanks a lot.
It's always measure in mA across the emitter resistors
To clarify the response, you measure the voltage drop across the collector resistor. You then divide the voltage drop by the resistance of that resistor. This will give you the current in milliamps
I have this same Pioneer receiver. I also have an old Fisher receiver. What do you charge for a complete rebuild? Located in Northern Cal. I would appreciate anything you could assist me with.
Hi can you fix my same model sx 1050 no audio! .. please let me know.. thanks...
@xraytonyb I have recently purchased a Pioneer SX-5580 (the ROW version of the SX-1050 with black faceplate). Its a bit of a "barn find" and is in need of restoration. Amazingly it does work - but its quite dusty inside and I would like it to be in tip top shape. How can I reach you to see if this would be a project you would like to undertake?
Thank you!
Hi Sebastiaan... What do you mean with "ROW version" ?
Thank you in advance.
Best regards.
“Rest of the World”. - sorry, this term is used in other industries to describe models (or parts) found in equivalent products outside of the U.S.
I have a pioneer sx450 receiver that the sound is all staticky when you first turn on,also when you adjust sound controls. How can I repair this problem?
Get yourself a can of DeOxIt and spray the controls. Blueglow electronics RUclips channel has a great tutorial about using this chemical to clean dirty noisy controls. Link is below. Good Luck!

Where are you located and if I were to ship you a pioneer SX receiver would you go through it for me. I will pay for good work.
Where are you located? I’m in Wisconsin need the same unit gone through. Cuts out one side. Do you repair them
Sorry, I'm not taking any new projects at this time. Try checking with the AudioKarma and DIYAudio websites, as they quite often have folks over there that do this sort of thing for a living.
hi there, ray, i notice that you mention that you sometimes put these old amps on ebay .do you have or can you get ahold of a sx950 1050 or 1250 that you have restored, and are willing to sell me .i would pay in the region of $1200 to 1400 dollars plus any shipping costs to england .the work you do is nothing short of miracules please consider my request, regards from england.mel stenway..
Very enjoyable, pity about the music (just kidding).
i have pioneer sx 980. how much for you to restore?
Depends on what all it needs. I may start taking on some additional projects after the first of the year. If I do, I'll announce it on this channel. Thanks for the question!
Blue capacitor manufacturer pleas???
Dam to have just anyone of the amps I had during the years oh how happy I'd be, just played most of em into the ground, but it was so easy to replace with another one, usually more amps per cnl. Always able to play speakers a+b
Now they build these new ones with no real style no amps that just had that look, you no what I'm saying .
They just always seem to think they no more than us what we want. That just plain straight up sucks. I want to walk into a store and look at all the different makes and models
And just decide yes look at this one here and look at all it will do and dam it looks so nice yea this ones coming home with me.
I just want an amp/rec that looks good can plug in all I need turntable, cd and so on and yea it needs to look good as it sounds . Is that so much to ask. Oh yea I don't need to mortgage my dam house to purchase a sterio. Sorry just got a little ticked. Watching once again someone fixing an old amp/ rec that were made affordable and made to enjoy.
Why does the video looks like it's a stop motion video?
hi again, tony, got your name right this time.sorry for that. just to amend the price i am willing to pay for a restored amp receiver sx.$1500 to $2000.regards from mel stenway in england.
Hi Melvyn,
Unfortunately, anything SX-850 or bigger is getting harder to find, and when you do, the ones in repairable condition fetch a pretty high price even before you restore them. I currently have an SX-750 that I will be restoring in the future. When it is complete, I will be putting it up for sale. In the past, I've found that even the SX-450, 550, 650 and 750's sound just as good as the larger ones. They just have less power. I'm a big fan of all the SX-'50 series receivers as well as the SA-'500 series integrated amps. Some of the receivers even have a line voltage switch, so they are very easy to switch over to European power. Just install a European-type plug and set the switch to 240VAC. Stay posted, as most of the amps you see me repair will go up for sale.
Thanks,
Tony
I have two of these heavy pioneer monsters, they are so heavy i am ready to hawl them out to the trash.
I'm sure there are many here that would like you to hawl them out to the trunk of their car ;)
Sell them on Ebay
Is it expensive to let my sx 838 to repair?
pending on what needs to be repaired or do you want it to be restored so it is like new in sound and problem free for a while.
A professional restore should cost between $200 and $300, if you have it done by a qualified technician. Top shelf components can add up the cost quickly, and the labor usually takes around 6 hours. Old gear like this is worth restoring. You would have to spend thousands to get the kind of sound quality of these 1970's units today, and you wold get a lot of plastic and not machined aluminum!
( Cont'd ) you have totally disrespected this receiver . The owner needs to speak up and have you do this properly if you are going to do it it's deserves to be done CORRECTLY! You are a damn good technician but this is UNACCEPTABLE...
Just wondering what you mean by this observation? I also have a Pioneer SX-980, which has never been touched. If I don't sell it as is, I would like to have it completely gone through so it is pristine, and sound-wise superb.
