Cleaning and restoring a 1970's aluminium Trangia camping stove set the correct way

  • So over the last few years I've seen a lot of people cleaning and 'restoring' their aluminium Trangia camping stoves with a variety of methods including dish scourers, steel wool, pot scourers, sandpaper, brass brushes, rubbing sand into it and more.
    Aluminium is an incredibly soft metal and as such is damaged very easily by most cleaning materials which you would normally be perfectly fine to use on ceramic or steel.
    The method I have used in the video uses Autosol metal polish which is designed specifically for use on aluminium and chrome, but also works incredibly well on a variety of other metals, not only does it remove oxidisation and rust, but also polishes and adds protection. One of the usual concerns when polishing and cleaning utensils which are used to prepare or cook food is the risk of of harmful toxins being ingested, but fortunately that isn't an issue with Autosol, here is an extract from their website:
    "Autosol Metal Polish is certified by NSF International, a global public health and safety organization, and has been declared safe for use around food processing areas. This product is non-toxic and ammonia free, making it ideal for household, automotive or industrial use."
    Naturally it is always worthwhile giving your pots and pans a good soapy clean and rinse after cleaning them with anything, always ensure you do this before using them for cooking (the same goes for when you purchase a brand new Trangia).
    Many of you may ask the reason for cleaning and polishing using this method, the answer is simple - after frequent use your Trangia will develop small abrasions and inconsistencies on the surface of the pans and equipments, these small abrasions will hold onto food and dirt and make cleaning difficult, and will also make it far more likely for burning and foodstuff to stick to the bottom of your pans when cooking, the smoother and more polished the surface the less likely this is to happen.
    This restoration was carried out in such a way to not remove all character from the equipment and to leave dents and character scratches intact. If you needed to remove deep scratches you will need to work through various grades of sandpaper from coarse to fine and then follow up with polishing afterwards, this should ONLY be done if the scratch is detrimental to use as sandpaper will quickly and easily remove aluminium material from your Trangia, as such should only be used when absolutely necessary.
    Remember, when cooking with your Trangia, always use plastic or wooden utensils to prevent scratching your pots and pans.
    -ADDITIONAL INFO-
    Please only use this method on bare aluminium, DO NOT use this method on non-stick surfaces or to clean the surface of the red Trangia equipment or other special surfaces.

    Shines brighter than new! I got the exact same one from my girlfriend's father. It is also either from the late 70s or early 80s. Hard work awaits me when it's so sooty :D
    I love trangia because it is timeless and lasts for decades.❤️

      You'll have so much fun 😁 the old ones are so much more satisfying to polish up than the newer ones, and you'll be surprised how easily they polish up with autosol on the aluminium and then brasso for the burner 😊

    There’s something therapeutic about watching something being renewed and transformed. You’ve made it better than new. It’s like polishing reveals the beauty of usage - those dents and dings catch the light in a perfectly imperfect way. I also love the look of polished aluminium. It has a much deeper and more subtle sheen than chrome. Great video. Please polish more stuff!

      Thanks Eddie, I'm so glad you understand and like that aspect of it too, I never like removing those old dents and scratches. I could quite easily sand down until the scratches were removed and then polish back up, and I could easily take some blocks of wood and a leather mallet and completely remove those dents and dings, but it would be such a shame to remove them. By polishing up and make those imperfections shine through, it really adds character and life to it 🥰🥰
      I'll definitely polish more things up, I've got my old Radius workshop stove to fix up and get running again 😁

    Shiniest Trangia I ever saw. They don't even come out of the factory mirror polished. Very pretty. Personally I prefer the patinated look but well done on your video.

      Thanks for the awesome comment, really appreciate it. Most modern Trangia's come matte/brushed/satin, in the much older models they came fully polished. I think they look great both ways, but I especially love having it shiny in situations like this where the deeper dings and character is left in place and is highlighted by the shine around it, the blemishes and dings stand out in a good way 😊

      Thanks, it actually doesn't take too long using Autosol, all in all it was probably around an hour and twenty minutes to do it all up, then the burner which I restored in the other video, took around 30 minutes. So not so bad 😊

    Do you have to wash the cooking pots and frying pan in hot soapy water to remove the residue of the aluminium polish?

    • @rustoration4199
      @rustoration4199  Год назад +2

      Yes, I would highly recommend washing your pots and pans with warm soapy water after polishing to remove any residue from the inside of the pans that will be in contact with food or liquids 😉

    An important point made about using a metal polish safe for food. A lot of metal polishes are toxic, notably Britain's favorite, Brasso.

    • @rustoration4199
      @rustoration4199  2 года назад

      Absolutely 🙌 a lot of people don't realise the importance of using the right product for the right metal and most importantly for the right surface use. Fine to use Brasso on the brass burner, but definitely shouldn't be used on food prep surfaces.
      Another one that drives me nuts is people using steel wool on aluminium 😱🤣

    • @markperry222
      @markperry222 2 года назад

      @@rustoration4199 Which reminds me of another cleaning problem. You should not wash aluminium in a ceramic sink. Fine particles of aluminium will stick in the cracks of the ceramic glaze, leaving grey lines. This is really noticable on white ceramics. There is no health risk attached, but it is ugly.

      @@rustoration4199 it’s in pretty good shape. It didn’t come with a burner and the non-stick surface on the frying pan is a little flakey but the pots and windscreens are not much used by the look of it. However they are not nearly as shiny as yours, which got me thinking. Also, i don’t know if this is a crazy idea, but have you ever heard of people drilling holes in the old screens to adapt them for gas stoves? I like alcohol stoves but sometimes it’s good to have other options…

    • @rustoration4199
      @rustoration4199  Год назад

      @@covenantking ah shame about the non-stick surface! I wouldn't recommend using this process on the non-stick surface unless you intend to completely remove that surface back to bare metal, might be worth an attempt on the fry pan if it's already flaking loose, flaking non-stick coatings aren't very healthy (or tasty 😜).
      As for modding the old screens to fit either gas or multifuel burners, yes. I've personally got an old Trangia 27 which has been modified to do it 😊 I've also modded my Trangia triangle so that can fit the Trangia Multifuel X2.
