I think Shrek doesnt realize or accept how lonely he really is until Donkey comes along and openly accepts him. He's been rejected by everyone in society his whole life so he's basically embraced that image. He becomes scary and mean because that's how people thought of him. Over time you become comfortable in your own space and you accept that you're unloveable by the rest of the world. But when someone actually decides to be nice to you it throws you for a loop because you believed for so long that you were incapable of being liked or loved, but now youre being reminded of all the hate you've endured this whole time and realizing that it didnt HAVE to be that way. I'm having a hard time coming up with similar examples in fiction at the moment but if i come up with some I'll update this comment. Just my thoughts

@@walrus6429Well not quite TWO anime, if the classification is confined to Japan, but there’s the actual Stitch anime and then a Chinese series called Stitch and Ai
The series and the Stitch Movie (and Leroy and Stitch) were my *jam*. To the point where I have made my boyfriend watch them with me because I loved it.
After watching the whole thing, I wanna say two things... 1. Thank you for giving the time and attention to the nominees that are not as talked about much, especially Boy and the World and Robot Dreams. 2. It’s easy to tear down something you don’t enjoy, but I find it a lot more impactful and intellectually interesting to discuss the positives of said media. I like balance!
Paprika is actually one of the best animated films ever and it was hands down the most important movie to come out that year. But sure, throw it to the wolves. Literally three movies got nominated, that's like spitting in Satoshi Kon's face.
@@reillymcwritingpaprika is the most overrated and boring film of all time it’s sad that the guy died but that doesn’t make it deserving of a nomination
Don't watch the Oscars, but damn wish they still made animations featuring characters from the movies reacting to whether they won or lost. Think the last time they did that was 2009 or 2010.
It was quite a cute detail, but I think I prefer how they do it nowadays honestly. The fact that we get to see the faces of those who created the movies just as we do with live action directors really helps raise public awareness for animation as a valid artistic medium. It's the difference between treating animated movies as quirky products created by an anonymous team (a view Disney very heavily pushed last century as a way of maintaining it's monopoly on animation, by the way) and regarding them as pieces of art created by people with unique talents and visions. Also I think those animations just wouldn't work well nowadays given that adult and other non comedic films frequently get nominated for the category. How could anyone ever make silly award ceremony skits about characters from movies like Persepolis, Anomalisa or Flee?
@@signodeinterrogacion8361 I think a middle ground could be established, of course depending on the movie maker's own desire, but to have representation in animated form for the animated productions would be great to see more again.
@@drdewott9154 I don't believe the creators themselves are the ones that can decide that, it's usually their corporate overloads that are in charge of this kind of 'marketing stunts'. And anyway having a different format for each movie that is in the running would be kind of awkward. Even if none of these adult movies ever win the entire segment would just feel off if it only applied to some movies, only half way for others and none at all for a few of them. But I get your point.

Man I remember as a teen, during the early 00s, the depressing realization that 2D animated movies where phased out so fast all of a sudden. I remember the sadness when I found out The Princess and the Frog was gonna be Disney's last 2D animated movie. I love and enjoy 3D art and have so much respect for the people who excel in that field of skill, but I wished new technology didn't make older mediums obsolete or irrelevant or less profitable (in the eyes of executives and shareholders).
I'd say Megamind absolutely deserved a nomination in 2010, it was fantastic. Definitely my most rewatched nomination in that year. Also, my favorite winner might just be Rango. As incredible as Boy and the Heron and Spirited Away are, Rango is unbelievably next level for animation, especially for CG. It's a straight up western. Thank you for introducing me to Anomalisa and Persepolis though. I think the latter after I watch it may become a new all time favorite.
megamind would've deserved a nomination in any other year, but for some reason 2010 only had three nominees despite how strong the competition was. even _tangled_ missed.
Well I think the thesis of Shrek is more "life is more complicated than Disney fairytales, but true love still exists." Like it is critical of the absurd extent of fairy tale romanization, but it still holds true to some of its core themes. Hence why Shrek dismisses the idea of true love at the beginning of the film, yet finds it at the end. He didn't believe it was possible for himself, but was later proven wrong, hence the song choice “I’m a Believer” and the lyrics “[I thought love was] meant for someone else but not for me.” Also Sid could know that a rhino's brain is small, I don’t see how that’s a stretch. I'm sure animals had their heads cracked open on occasion during the Ice Age, and it would make sense if they had simple biological knowledge like that, especially in a world where animals talk.
Honestly your analysis is like a breathe of fresh air! I can’t quite explain it but there’s just a passion for the craft rather than an expectation, fantastic video!
@@sofsof5062I truly hate how every animated movie is now marketed with a wall of celebrity names who did voices while professional VA’s toil in anonymity.

The Lilo and Stitch part was so unbelievably based, my favorite movie of all time Truly an underrated classic, despite Stitch being one of Disney's most iconic characters
And I feel bad cause I feel like yet again it taught Disney the wrong lesson like the reason it was perfect is cause this cute figure was so grounded in this movie that everyone adored him. But instead they though oh keep making more cute marketable mascots
As a Brazillian, i jumped straight to the "Boy and the World" review (i will come back and watch everything when i have the time). This movie is easily one of the best productions my country ever made. If you ever want to go deeper about the movie, you can search things like "Ditadura Militar" or "Exodo Rural", which are both BIG parts of its meaning. They make the emotional parts hit even deeper.
it feels so great to hear such high praise for robot dreams! i really wish the movie couldve been released in the US before the oscars, it felt like the odds were very against it because of that. but im so happy you liked it!
I finally finished "ALL 99 Animated Oscar Nominees RANKED" and I hope you update us on the new nominees every year and what you think should be nominees, this was truly an amazing video.
This was an amazing video! The RUclips algorithm blessed me with an absolute banger. I love that you went into deep dives into each film, doing thematic readings and unpacking your opinions vs. simple plot summaries. I think many people who would undergo this project would likely gloss over a lot of entries, but you clearly went above and beyond giving every single entry time in the spotlight. I also can't thank you enough for going into the submissions and snubs for each year. You've left me with a whole stack of films to check out. Thank you so much!
In defense of Spirit, I think the horses expressing themselves is like. Kind of essential to telling the story? You want animated horses to just stand around and look like normal ass horses? The great thing about animation is that you CAN pull the expressions a bit and tell a story that wouldn't be told with any other medium. That's the entire point of it being animation. Sorry, not to be harsh but I think that was a very silly criticism. Do agree the narration is stupid tho.
I am probably in minority but I didn't hate shape of water. Like dont get me wrong i love get out more but i dont think it is GDT'S worst film. Like Pinocchio and Nightmare alley were more worthy best picture but i do think is it still decent film, just the comparation was better

I thought it was pretty obvious shrek was just trying to make the best out of the life he was given knowing that would probably be his reality until the day he died, depression doesn't always show, as for shrek forever after he gets overwhelmed by the things he always wanted to have but didn't know how to handle as everyone else who had them from the begining, he unknowingly chooses the easy way out of that lifestyle only to regret it instantly
Really enjoy your writing. Super positive as well as fair. I like that you say “soften” rather than “soured”. It shows that really care about these movies even though you may not love them all. Keep up the great work👍🏽
My favorite DreamWorks movie (that was supposed to be the first) is The Prince of Egypt. The film was somewhat successful and is the darkest, most beautiful DreamWorks thing ever. The first scene is slaves working for Egypt and it doesn't hold back. It's a work of art, I don't want to spoil it.
If there is a film that deserves an honorary oscar, it's this one. All round beautiful storytelling from the visuals, animation, music, voice acting. Dare I say it's the best animated film ever put out by the west.
I really appreciate your insightful approach to each review. You have a great voice and a very interesting perspective that I think so many other essayists in the animation sphere lack. Summarizing a plot isnt a review! Great job all around.
I'm currently in a very overwork time in my life but I could not resist watching this AMAZING video. Had to watch in at least 9 different sessions but it was hella worth it!!
The plot/premise of Mirai would have made more sense if the title were better translated to english (which seems to be a common issue with Japanese animated films). In Japanese, the title is "Mirai no mirai", where Mirai (ミライ) is the character's name and mirai (未来) is a word in Japanese that means "future", so the title literally translates to "Mirai's future", which explains what happens in the movie a lot more.
Thank you so much for this Mr twice celloed! Truly an undertaking to be proud of my guy. And very much respect for inviting in other people to speak on your video. Sharing is daring. Thank you

If you like Loving Vincent, I recommend watching this studio's most recent movie called Peasants. It's based on polish book by Nobel Prize-winning author, and I really think it deserves more recognition.
This was a masterpiece of a video. I’ve never seen such an appreciation for animation quite like this. From Anomalisa to the Wind Rises, I now have a ton of movies to watch.
Hey Johnny! It took me a couple of days to get through this, but I did. And man, I'm so impressed with this. I realized that there's about a third of these movies that I haven't seen yet and I really want to now. Thank you, and your team, for this! Hugs from Sweden!
Hey, I finally finished the video, and I had an absolute blast watching all six hours! Thank you for the crazy amount of effort you put into this! I think it's really clear that you were more interested in introducing great films to people, rather than puting out some "objective" ranking. I really appreciate that you did your best to express what stood out about even the films you didn't care for, in case that was something someone else might resonate with. I know I definitely have some new animated movies I want to check out!
1:01-1:02 - Technically most of the Oscars wins for Best Animated Feature up until the last two Oscar’s (95th-96th) have awarded the animated films to a Pixar or Disney film with eleven of them awarded to Pixar and four to Disney. DreamWorks only won two Oscars (or one by default) via Shrek and _Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the WereRabbit_ but not as much compared to Pixar. In fact, only eight of the animated films not from Pixar and Disney have won Oscars: 1. Shrek (DreamWorks) 2. Spirited Away (Studio Ghibli) 3. Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the WereRabbit (DreamWorks/Aardman) 4. Happy Feet (Warner Bros.) 5. Rango (Paramount Pictures) 6. Into the Spider-Verse (Sony Picture Animation) 7. Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio (Netflix/Shadow Machine) 8. The Boy and the Heron (Studio Ghibli)
Here's hoping the next year the lotr animated film or wild robot or wallace and gromit or a international choice( marcel pagnol, most precious of cargoes ,memoir of snale etc...) to ein the next since Disney was only inside out 2 and academy doesn't care about non toy story sequels
Your passion telling these stories comes through so warmly that your summaries keep bringing me to tears. I’m only one-third of the way through, but you’re gifting me rediscovery with every film you cover. Thank you

I just want to quickly mention how great this video is. Like, I've been watching for 3 hours, not even on double speed or anything and if I had the time I would fully be open to finish it right now. It's rare that something this long is so entertaining to watch, even though it's just a guy talking about movies. I haven't finished it, but already, very good video!
This has got to be one of my favorite videos just talking about animated movies ever. Your understanding for what goes behind animation, for what goes into a story, for the directors and writers and voice actors and everything else- even when it’s something I disagree with like Shrek or Toy Story 4, I feel we comprehended everything from each movie and your arguments are simply from your own understanding. I feel like there’s a lot of movies I should go out and see now- luckily I work at the theaters, so I get free movies (saw Boy and the Heron the week it released), so I try to watch as many animated films as I can (unless it’s like Minions or Paw Patrol), I’m looking forward to seeing Robot Dreams on our screens in May (I haven’t seen any poster deliveries yet, I hope we will so I can grab one)

5:37:03 Absolutely agreed. As much as I liked the first two Shrek movies and especially their humor, they felt more awkwardly paced in comparison to TLW. The humor also doesn’t rely too much on pop culture references.
I saw Robot Dreams in the cinema (it has been a while since it has been released in Spain) and let me tell you it was a rollercoaster to watch, so much joy, sadness.... and the music chef's kiss!!! It's a must watch !!!
after watching the whole thing, I can say that I really, really, need to watch anomalisa and the tale of the princess kaguya. Of course tons of others as well. Great work on this!
Trying to watch all of these - and all future nominees - now feels like a budding family tradition I'd love to invest time in. The way that you gave every movie the same chance and open mind made me realise I often haven't - both in being too part of the Disney/Pixar circuit, AND in rejecting it and avoiding it once it wore thin. The level of love and effort in this video was incredible, and I'm so glad to be able to sit here and watch it, and to learn about so many movies that passed me by, and so many movies I'd lost sight of and should give another chance. Thank you for your dedication bringing this to the world!!
I'mma be honest, people who felt betrayed by Toy Story 4 and those who loved it are the only stances I've seen on the internet thus far. It's a testament to how impactful the film was in the public zeitgeist.
I loved this video so so so much!! Can truly feel the love for animation and art in general here and it’s lovely. There’s truly so many amazing movies and i love how you covered them, especially the extra non nominated movies each year. Love the even coverage of everything too!
Well said.

"Constant accidental 9/11's" is not a phrase I expected to hear in an animation review but I can't say I'm mad about it.
I saw this comment when I hadn’t seen most of the video, I was expecting it to be in response to Turning Red.
Johnny: *wishes Lilo and Stitch got more attention*
Lilo and Stitch: *received three sequel movies, a series and two separate animes*
NOT THAT KIND OF ATTENTION
Wait two seperate animes?
I know about the Manga of stitch traveling to feudal Era Japan and befriending a samurai but I did not know that he had not one but two anime about him
@@walrus6429Well not quite TWO anime, if the classification is confined to Japan, but there’s the actual Stitch anime and then a Chinese series called Stitch and Ai
LMAO literally just commented this before reading other replies.
2. Thank you for the positivity on the films that are overhated from the majority and on the films you hate. It made me feel a little better after seeing reccent news and other sad things I saw. YAY POSITIVITY!!!!1!!!111!!!
p.s. I hope Schaffrillas gives you a shoutout
I’ve only just started the video but I really appreciate your willingness to talk about the positive aspects of Shrek despite not liking it yourself. I think that’s the mark of a great writer. I love hearing about how people may not personally enjoy pieces of media but still bring positive spins on it. It’s easy to tear down something you don’t enjoy, but I find it a lot more impactful and intellectually interesting to discuss the positives of said media. I like balance!
THANK YOU that means a lot to me and I apologize in advance for having nothing good to say about Shark Tale lol
@@johnny2channels I think it's humanly impossible to find enough good things to say about Shark Tale
"Lilo and Stitch never got the attention it deserved"
To be fair it got two sequels, a tv show, an anime, and a TON of merchadise.
But unfortunately, Stitch has kinda turned into Disney’s Minions when it come to its role in popular culture.
And an upcoming live action remake...
The injustice of Happy Feet winning and Paprika not getting a nom at all, unbelievable.
Paprika is actually one of the best animated films ever and it was hands down the most important movie to come out that year. But sure, throw it to the wolves. Literally three movies got nominated, that's like spitting in Satoshi Kon's face.
I think paprika didn't ( underseving) nom because it was rather obscure with cars and happy feet domain the award season

If I didn't have such a nostalgic appreciation for Wall-E I would agree with you. Actually I'm not sure Into the Spiderverse might be there too
megamind would've deserved a nomination in any other year, but for some reason 2010 only had three nominees despite how strong the competition was. even _tangled_ missed.
As a kid that was taken from his family by child services, man Lilo and Stitch hit HARD as a child.
They should really have a voice acting category for best actor and actress

The Lilo and Stitch part was so unbelievably based, my favorite movie of all time
Truly an underrated classic, despite Stitch being one of Disney's most iconic characters

Mike Wazowski in the thumbnail is genius! Using the time code as an Easter Egg 🤯
The way you talk about these movies with so much passion and joy literally made me cry a few times. Great job man!

Exactly. I would think we all know that moment when the sadness jus drapes over us. Trying to make the best of things but the happiness doesn't last.

The way you analyze each film it's so entertaining that it makes the video shorter than it actually is,splendid job johnny ♡

This has got to be one of my favorite videos just talking about animated movies ever.
