Love this scene. I just love this film in general, a piece of art! This film and The Devil's Advocate are some of my favorite mystery thriller films! And if you liked this you should definitely see Devil's Advocate, both films are similar but also different.

Angel was an atheist. Johnny was a satanist. Angel was a low-level private eye with no morals and average intelligence at best. Johnny was a very clever, cunning, suave, charming, and terrible person at heart. The latter lowered himself in humanity when he ate the heart and got blown up becoming another person.
Mickey Rourke actually became Harry Angel. It's not acting - it's Harry Angel! That sort of thing doesn't happen all that often. Everything about the film is perfect. Rourke is a powerhouse throughout and I believe this was his best ever film. De Niro overplays, but perfectly! And the cinematography. I wish I could wear a crumpled linen suit like Angel does.

In this movie, New York City is a cesspool of slushy snow and decaying buildings, and New Orleans is a cesspool of old decaying buildings and hot weather. Nothing in this movie looks cheery or bright, everything is gloomy.

I saw Angel Heart at the cinema back in’87 and it absolutely terrified me. At the end of the film my friends and I were standing near exit door staring at the movie screen watching the end credits showing Johnny Favorite going down the elevator and when he got to the bottom we were all frozen scared and there was theater usher standing behind us and he said “BOO!” and we all screamed!

The book is a good read as well, but DeNiro as Satan was inspired casting. He seems to be having real fun with the character. The eighties were really the last era of good horror movies that were not so reliant on mindless gore and bobble-head character. Jacob's Ladder was another very interesting movie that still makes me think what it's about

The conclusion of this is surprising because the man he’s looking for was released from a hospital, had amnesia, bandages around his face and extensive plastic surgery, thus making the people Angel interviewed about Favorite not realize......Anyway, your voice can change over time from aging and smoking. Johnny Favorite was probably too smart and sophisticated to be a smoker.
Take your nostalgia lenses of old man there was plenty of shitty garbage 80s horror around tons of b movie straight to video films full of senseless gore and guess what there still is great horror movies being made just need to look for them.

I think the first creepy scene was the close up of Harry's face as he had a flashback of the soldier in Times Square, and that music made it even more spookier .

As honorable mention, I humbly submit The Exorcist for your consideration. I'll never forget William Friedman's comments during a Q&A in LA about 15 years ago. He said it's actually a detective story. If you view it all from the perspective of the detective (played by Lee J. Cobb) as he sets out to find the killer of the party guest. The juxtaposition of his slowly rising suspicions and the collective horror of Regans mother (and the audience) creates a tension that's unbearable. He's dutifully doing his work on the case, yet we're privy to the real (possibly hallucinatory) chaos happening in that house. It's the unrelenting grounding in reality balanced with unimaginable supernatural which makes this truly gripping on a psychological level. The visuals are just icing on the cake.
I think it was important it was noted "Angel" was an atheist/satanist, Lucifer would not have stood a chance if he were not. All it took was one command "satan, leave him" and gone.

James Dean was lead in three movies. Mickey Rourke is a legend. Yes, he self-deatructed but when he was in his prime, he was the best.

It's the unrelenting grounding in reality balanced with unimaginable supernatural which makes this truly gripping on a psychological level. The visuals are just icing on the cake.
