Great Job Dan You need to make a temporary mold to maintain the out side shape when casting. 1. turn shape on project. 2.put 2 coats of sealer (any kind, it will be turned off later) 3.chisel, router, gouge (what ever it takes)in a scrap piece of wood to the rough outside shape of the piece .Its not fussy. Big enough scrap to cover your window you intend to cut in your piece. 4. wax your project with past wax or use a release agent. 5.mix up Bondo. Its two parts A and B. Its auto body filler. Buy it at auto parts store, or Harbor Fright. 6.spread the bondo on both your project and the scrap piece and clamp to project. (You may need to do this step twice depending on how good the mold looks after the two are separated) 7separate the two. 8.hollow out your project(making sure not to go past what the mold covers.( before hollowing wax project then hollow, that way plastic only sticks to intended surface) 9.put sealer on mold, Use wax or use parting agent on mold (we don't want the mold the stick to project) 10.place mold over cavity, clamp and seal out side perimeter with hot glue or clay. 11.Pour. I absolutely love how creative and different your work is! But I have to challenge your statement that “ 80’s rock is where it’s at! “ Sorry man but it’s the blues that you play in the background of your videos that keeps me coming back! ❤
I admire a man who laughs at his mistakes and carries on anyway. Funny, you point out the flaws when honestly, all I see is something absolutely beautiful. It was the reason I watched this, the thumbnail looked gorgeous and I wasn't disappointed!
@Dan Preece, Wood, Resin and Photographic Art I'm sorry, I just love intelligence that thinks outside the box. Your stress release produces stunning pieces.
Dan, I enjoy your videos so much. I've just been watching for a little over a month, and I have to say, they really feed my soul. I'll never turn anything on a lathe, but I do paint, knit and crochet, though I'm far from a "fireball". I'm not a slow knitter, and I'm not a fast knitter ... I"m more of a half-fast knitter. 😁 Anyhow, watching the creativity of folks like you is so nourishing, and hearing you narrate the process is such an integral part of that. And last, but far from least, is the good work that this supports. Onward and upward!
Apparently, I started watching your videos from the most recent and am working backward. It's amazing how much your techniques have changed. Nice growth.
Love this artistic vase! Like the artist, Bob Ross, said " There are no mistakes, just happy accidents." I'd have made even more crackles! I enjoy hearing what's worked and what hasn't and your discoveries along the way. I also want to thank your wife for allowing you to raid her craft and kitchen shelves to further your craft! There'll be no salad on the menu tonight!!!
Great commentary and awesome Texas blues , I usually mute the other turning programs because of the childish music . Brother you have it all worked out . And what a great cause for the kids .
Beautiful job. He took things from nature and turned them into something different and useful. This idea of using twigs for me gave a different and interesting touch to the final piece
A mistake that brought attention of a great website to over 200k people, if only we could all have those kinds once in a while. 😊 Thank you for introducing me to it, I'll keep my eyes out for some stuff on there, and get back into crafting to contribute once i leave service. 👍
WOW!! What a beautiful piece of art!! You may have encountered problems, but this is nothing short of stunning!!! I just love it!!!! Please keep tapping into your artistic side! I'd love to see more!!! God Blesss you and thank you for your service!!! You contribute to two worlds very important to humanity. Art and Medicine. God bless and I pray he keeps his hands on you!!!
Wow that is beautiful. I like to tell myself that there are no mistakes in wood working just lovely surprises.... But I will admit that some of my "lovely surprises" have unceremoniously made it into the burn pile! It is good to see how you salvaged this into a real masterpiece!
Dan, your optimism is contagious! This is my first time watching you. The little flaws make the turn unique! And, you didn’t kill yourself! Lol. Thank you, for your heart for children. Be blessed! 😊
Dan, You are very welcome. I just finished watching you white birch turn. Absolutely stunning! I am an artist and would like to donate some of my pieces to your wonderful cause. This cause tugs at my heart. I work with polymer clay, from which I make jewelry. I do paint pouring on coasters and canvas. I am a very eclectic artist. I also paint with oils, acrylic and watercolors. My favorite thing was working with resin and alcohol ink. Unfortunately, my resistance to the fumes dropped and I became severely allergic to it. I gave another wood turner a few pieces of my resin that he in turn incorporated it in a bowl. I was honored. I’ll click on your link and join up. My studio is overflowing with my work. If you would like, send me a friend at Robin M. Shay, you can get an idea of what I do. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. 😊
