- Without doubt, today has been the busiest in terms of heritage traction converging all in one place, with the appearance of not only Steam traction, but also diesel and electric motive power from yesteryear!
Starting off, making it's regular appearance on the Sellafield to Crewe flasks is Direct Rail Services owned Class 37, 37610 'Ted Cassidy' and Class 57, 57003, seen stopping at the signals for a quick driver change.
Next, the arrival of the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express railtour from London Euston to Carlisle was heralded by preserved Class 86, 86259 'Les Ross', making a spectacular display as it rolls into Carnforth after detaching from the tour. A few minutes later, preserved LMS Stanier Jubilee number 45699 'Galatea' backs towards her train with Cylinder Cocks wide open.
With the coupling complete, 45699 is seen north of Carnforth station powering north, with the uninviting hills and inclines of the Cumbrian Mountains awaiting.
But the day was far from over, as arriving from the National Railway Museum in York with two coaches was preserved Class 55 'Deltic', 55002 'Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry', seen arriving into Carnforth station and then backing away into the sidings for storage. The locomotive had taken the coaches to York the previous day in order to collect 46229 'Duchess of Hamilton', which has no brakes of her own and thus required extra braking force for her move to Shildon.
Overall, a fantastic and busy day on the railways! Apologies for the shaking camera at many points, but the stiff breeze coming off Morecambe Bay was unrelenting.
Enjoy!
Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed watching all the action.
Dave

What a busy day indeed Ruairidh and well caught and edited despite your battle with the elements! Don't know about you but I find Carnforth station slightly awkward to film upon - with the layout and the many other photographers - however you managed it very well. Any idea who 'Les Ross' was? Thanks. Ken
Yep, it certainly was a busy busy day. And Les Ross is a radio presenter from the West Midlands. He bought the locomotive after Virgin Trains named the engine after him. :)
Liked, especially 3:39!!
Thank you very much, it was a tad windy thought xD hehehe
