Dear Paul, I have already bought three of your arrangments, and I am very glad with it. Perfect, Shallow, and Love of My Life by Eddy Mercury. I find your arrangement refined, delicat and very pleasing to play, with beautifull harmonies. It is not always that easy for me to play, but what about *practice*… Recently I remembered when I was a student I would learn four pieces a year, by heart, but only four; days after days, and week after weeks, practice a section then another, and after eight months I knew them very well. But now as an adult, I imagine I can play everything perfectly just on the first sight reading… I like so much your arrangements that I decided not only to play it well and on tempo, but by heart too (Shallow first) and yes, I will *practice*. I had another listen to your arrangement and I love that ascending line at 1:47-1:52. So so cool! It's clear from your arrangement and playing that you do put a lot of thought into it! I personally don't write or arrange music because I also hate making decisions and don't have the persistence to finish pieces haha. I do improvise random songs though. It's always fun to go on RUclips and see how other people arrange music. I love your style so I've subscribed to your channel and I look forward to hearing more stuff in the future!

Thanks so much! I'm glad you like my arrangement. I agree with you that the price seems high. The idea of the Musicnotes "Signature Artist" series is to enable pianist-arrangers on RUclips (like me) to keep on producing (hopefully) high quality arrangements. This song was written by Lady Gaga.. but also by Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando and Mark Ronson so a large portion of your $9.99 goes (as it should!) to them and their publishers. Musicnotes must also secure and pay for what is called a Print License from the publisher. Of course they also take their percentage of the price. What is left over then comes to me. The idea of making the higher price is to ensure that the amount I make as an arranger.. if I sell *enough* sheet music.. might add up to being enough for me to treat this as real work.. therefore producing more and more arrangements.. Otherwise I would have to say yes to other jobs instead of being able to stay home and work on these covers. It's tricky.. and of course I agree with you that sometimes capitalism feels evil.. I also sometimes feel worried about the high price because of course I want young pianists and students to be able to play my arrangements too .. it does make me try my best to be worth it though.. I put a lot of hours and love and work and careful decisions and experience and emotion into these arrangements. I know this particular one feels very simple.. but often arriving at simplicity is the hardest thing. Anyway I just wanted to let you know what you get for the price of coffee & cake .. and that of course I have to gladly share that cake with Lady Gaga
thank you, Paul, for the thoughtful response. what i meant by my blunt comment (sorry) is, that if i put all into perspective, that's a price of a paperback novel at 300+ pages, or maybe even two novels - depends.. which take years to put together, and even there i'm paying the publisher, the editor, the paper maker, the woodchuck, the printer, the cover designer, the truck driver, etc., and in a small part the author, too. so, sadly, i cannot consider the pricing of musicnotes realistic or not ridiculous - and that's not even taking into account the further restrictions of their print-out and pdf policies. if i bought just two arragements of A Star is Born songs on musicnotes, i'd pay roughly the equivalent of the complete OST physical album! that simply just doesn't add up in my world, i'm sorry to say.
Thanks @@3r7s .. I get it.. and of course as a consumer myself I see your point. One could also argue that it is, in fact, the price of the paperback novel that is ridiculous and unrealistic. From the point of view of the author.. struggling to pay their rent, unable to find the time or headspace to write the next novel because they have to also have a "real" job.. it certainly is. We want good novels. We acknowledge they might take a year or more to write. We know the author only gets a small part of the small price we pay. My question then is: do we really want good novels? I understand it's tricky.. Raising the prices is only one solution.. Fairer percentages would be a better one.. but paying the musician less because the author gets less and the author less because the dancer gets less than they do.. it's a slippery slope.. eventually the artists become the woodchuck in your story.. exploited because we do what we are naturally compelled to do.. create.. .. .. I'm not arguing or fighting with you.. believe me I get it.. it just makes me sad. I don't really have the solution.

@@PaulHankinsonMusic You're right, "Thinking out loud" was definitly one of the harder songs, but I like to challenge myself 😁 I've also learned "Perfect", "Can't help falling in love" and "A thousand years", and there are so many others versions that I would like to learn as well, but I should probably stick to one at the time 😅 Have a great day

Thanks so much! I'm glad you like my arrangement. I agree with you that the price seems high. The idea of the Musicnotes "Signature Artist" series is to enable pianist-arrangers on RUclips (like me) to keep on producing (hopefully) high quality arrangements. This song was written by Lady Gaga.. but also by Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando and Mark Ronson so a large portion of your $9.99 goes (as it should!) to them and their publishers. Musicnotes must also secure and pay for what is called a Print License from the publisher. Of course they also take their percentage of the price. What is left over then comes to me. The idea of making the higher price is to ensure that the amount I make as an arranger.. if I sell *enough* sheet music.. might add up to being enough for me to treat this as real work.. therefore producing more and more arrangements.. Otherwise I would have to say yes to other jobs instead of being able to stay home and work on these covers. It's tricky.. and of course I agree with you that sometimes capitalism feels evil.. I also sometimes feel worried about the high price because of course I want young pianists and students to be able to play my arrangements too .. it does make me try my best to be worth it though.. I put a lot of hours and love and work and careful decisions and experience and emotion into these arrangements. I know this particular one feels very simple.. but often arriving at simplicity is the hardest thing. Anyway I just wanted to let you know what you get for the price of coffee & cake .. and that of course I have to gladly share that cake with Lady Gaga

what i meant by my blunt comment (sorry) is, that if i put all into perspective, that's a price of a paperback novel at 300+ pages, or maybe even two novels - depends.. which take years to put together, and even there i'm paying the publisher, the editor, the paper maker, the woodchuck, the printer, the cover designer, the truck driver, etc., and in a small part the author, too.
so, sadly, i cannot consider the pricing of musicnotes realistic or not ridiculous - and that's not even taking into account the further restrictions of their print-out and pdf policies.
if i bought just two arragements of A Star is Born songs on musicnotes, i'd pay roughly the equivalent of the complete OST physical album!
that simply just doesn't add up in my world, i'm sorry to say.
Thanks @@3r7s .. I get it.. and of course as a consumer myself I see your point. One could also argue that it is, in fact, the price of the paperback novel that is ridiculous and unrealistic. From the point of view of the author.. struggling to pay their rent, unable to find the time or headspace to write the next novel because they have to also have a "real" job.. it certainly is. We want good novels. We acknowledge they might take a year or more to write. We know the author only gets a small part of the small price we pay. My question then is: do we really want good novels? I understand it's tricky.. Raising the prices is only one solution.. Fairer percentages would be a better one.. but paying the musician less because the author gets less and the author less because the dancer gets less than they do.. it's a slippery slope.. eventually the artists become the woodchuck in your story.. exploited because we do what we are naturally compelled to do.. create.. .. .. I'm not arguing or fighting with you.. believe me I get it.. it just makes me sad. I don't really have the solution.
