    I also like in a cold climate and I grow LOTS of cacti and succulents. With my true cacti (like your opuntia with the wonky pads) I find it’s best to literally not water them all winter, from late October to March usually I won’t give them ANY water at all unless they are showing visible signs of stress, if they are under grow lights I will water them only maybe once or twice during this time, but usually not at all if they are growing in natural light. This helps them stay in dormancy and prevent that weird winter growth, it also can help trigger flowering on certain types of cactus

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  9 месяцев назад +2

      This is exactly what I needed to know - thank you!!! Im thinking about trying the no water method with the opuntia 👀

    Almost all cacti appreciate temperatures a bit under 10°c in the winter (night temp, during the day up to 15-17 probably)
    Some cacti like temperatures in the minus, some like up to 5 degrees ect. It depends on the species. Dont water them a lot, the colder the less water you should give. I didnt water my cact at all this winter because they live outside whole-year-round, and it can get really cold.
    But temperature is the key for me. Whenever theres a cold winter the bloom like crazy.

    With the monkey tail, I’d just pop two of the skinny tails off the big chunky one and plant them into the soil. These root super fast. This is how I’ve filled out a 12” bowl of them and they grow long so fast that now they look like dreadlocks. I’m also so jealous of your amazing stapellia!

    My euphorbia white ghost went on a JOURNEY this summer. Moved from the states to canada, and i stuck mine outside in direct sunlight and watered frequently. No burning, it just grew a lot and turns fiery pink on the tips. It fell off my balcony and broke, but now i just have 3 white ghosts 😂. I just brought all my cacti in last night too.

    Harry's is available at Walmart in Canada, I seriously recommend to anyone who shaves! I got the Flamingo razor at Walmart (marketed to women without the up charge) 3 years ago and I thought when I bought it "I toss out a razor blade every week so I'll get extras" the kit came with 3 blades and then I bought an 8 or 12 pack (I think 8) on the side fully expecting it would need replaced that often. No joke, last week I put my last blade on! Those blades last forever! Men usually say women shaving wrecks their blades for their face (sorry dad when I was young), but no joke, I shave legs, undies and the lady parts (tmi but that's a sensitive area) and I've NEVER got a nick or razor burn from a dull blade and I use them in all three areas once a week and only need to change the blade about every 8-10 WEEKS that's just mind-blowing and even when the blade is needing changed, if you forget your not getting razor burn, you simply don't get as close of a shave or you need to use a bit extra shaving cream so it glides better! HIGHLY recommend the Harry's brand. My 19 year old son switched from a Mach 3 razor to Harry's BC of the cost as well. I literally used to just get frustrated with the costs and end up buying single use razors BC of the price. If you shave def try this brand out and get it as gifts for men/women you know for Christmas, esp if you've got a younger person in your life BC it's hard to budget 20-30 dollars a month for blades and you can spend that in a year with Harry's! 😍😍

    Loved this video! Always love an Olive sighting with her sweet little tail wagging 🥰You covered so many things I had mentioned and things you haven't shown in a while...and bonus, my comment got a highlight (yay 😊). I totally get not being able to see the growth in some of your plants (because you're there with them and see them every day) but wow, your monkey tail really has grown a lot...and the rat tail too! I bet your monkey tail will push out more babies next summer and fill out more like you want it to be...but it's your plant...if you want to chop and prop it to make it more full, then you do you and what makes you happy! It'll look great regardless. Loved seeing an update on your Bakeri and a comparison to your other strappy anthurium. It definitely has a different look from the other two but still has the same vibes. Your stapelia is gorgeous 😍 She has perfect timing! Can't wait for mine to bloom!

    Wow that monkey tail cactus looks amazing now. Yours looks so chunky looking. How do you achieve the thickness? Others i see less chunky. I know more light they stay hairy. The rat’s tail is my favourite. Hopefully i see one able to purchase. I presume the propagations are the same to the monkey tail cactus. The Euphorbia White ghost another favourite. Very rare to purchase aswell. The Opuntia Variegated. I many to purchase a tiny one for €5 haven’t done much yet. Cannot wait to see it achieve like yours one day. Summer time i have plants that needs more sun on the window sills and close to the windows. Colder weather i just leave them going dormant I don’t mind too much. As watering can be less needed.

    My variegated Opuntia put out so many pads this summer, but they’re facing downwards. She’s currently staked to in a crazy way to try to get them face upwards.

    Hi Fern. Great video!!! Your philodendron - Glorious is amazing. So beautiful!!! I recently bought a baby philodendron - Gloriosum. I'm wondering if it's the same thing. It only has two leaves and hoping it's a climber like yours. Your Piper - Crocatum is gorgeous. Absolutely love this plant. The dark green leaves and pink venation, makes it spectacular looking. They are very hard to grow as they love humidity and warmth. So lovely to see Olive again!!!! 🐕🪴💗

      P. Gloriosum is a crawler and won't climb. Ferns Glorious is a hybrid between the Gloriosum and a P. Melanochrysum. The climbing and darkness comes from the Melanochrysum. But the Gloriosum is a really beautiful plant on its own and can size up greatly. It's hardy, forgiving and rewarding. Good luck

    Maybe you can try to repot your Linearis to those like an upside down hanging pot so that the plant will grow vertically and it will give more like a curtain vibe. 15:46

    Hi Fern I love your videos for an amateur plant person. I am in US and would love to buy a cutting of the variegated thanksgiving plant. Any suggestions? I just purchased by looking at this video the Anthurium Pallidiflorum plant from a foreign nursery. Hopefully it will be in pristine condition when I receive it.

    Usually the opuntia curl if they face one direction to long, but it’s very strange how yours is opposite! It’s almost like one got the rising sun on one side of the pole and one got the setting sun. Lol I don’t see how that would have happened otherwise. They should pop back up with consistent light and rotation.❤
    Regarding overwintering succulents, I’d suggest using grow lights so growth doesn’t etiolate and/or stunt!

      No rain as they were on a covered deck. I watered 1-2 times a week :)
