Man, I bet your mom cried at how good that looked. You really did a kindness for her. No ac remodeling for free...that’s love.

Major kudos to you and your hubby helping your parents do that. I know my kids wouldn't come visit and help me. And you did an amazing job.

Wow, that is a huge kitchen. I'm suffering from storage envy - but bless all your hearts for taking on this project for your parents.

I use to have the same style of cabinets. I bought strips of lattice wood from Home Depot, cut it to size, and attached it around the faces with wood glue and pin nailer, then I stained. Added cool hardware...total transformation. Looks great! Good job...good daughter! :)

I so wanted to do that! We just didn’t have time or funds to do all the trimming.... but if we ever buy a house with similar cabinets I’m so doing that! 😁

I recently did the same thing with my 1975 slab doors and drawers. The shaker look is so much better now. I would have loved to stain the wood but some knucklehead cut some of the doors on a horizontal grain. No one with sense does that!

The cabinets look fabulous! You all did a great job and saved your parents a ton of money by not having to replace the cabinets.

Wow, I live in SC and it's very humid. No AC, what? Omg. Im crying for u. The cabinets looked very nice. That was a major job. We bought a fixer upper and have been diying this place for 16 years.... Now to add on before we r too old to enjoy it!

Great job! Always great when families work together... I grew up in AZ, and we had a swamp cooler too. I actually liked it, kept my skin from drying out in the AZ summer. But you’re right, it does nothing in the humidity. Yuck! But great job doing this for your parents. :)

Congrats! I laughed and also felt so sorry for you about the humidity part. I just moved from the west coast to N. Carolina, in AUGUST!! So I could really relate as I felt like crying a lot from that humidity thing. But, now those cabinets are ready for 30 more yrs now, right?? 🤞🙂

They came out awesome! So nice of you to do that for your parents 💜. I had no idea Val-spar made a hell stain. I am going to re stain my stairs and thought I was going to have to order General Finishes online. I’m too impatient to wait lol. Thanks for sharing!

Sharon Gasparaitis min wax makes one too, you can find it at your local home depot, lowes and menards if you have one

Vanessa Haugen thank you for the info, I had no idea any other co made gel stain except general finishes. Do you know if they are as good as General Finishes?

I've used the minwax one, it's nice. We did a wood grain texture on a metal door with it.

I envy you that you got to go back home to a less hot/humid area. I live in California and it's a HOT summer!!
Thanks for sharing. I love the result! I thinking of using that gel stain soon. Have you used it on any other projects? I don't remember seeing it before on your videos. I want to refurbish an old rocking chair so I'm curious if it would work for that because I loved the color(s) in the cabinets in the end. Lots of pretty shades coming through.

I have a similar project I want to do, but the finished cabinets here look blotchy and uneven to me. I wonder if it needed sanded less? BC most projects I've seen with gel stain were sanded very lightly.

My kitchen is a 1974 nightmare .I need your video today .Thank you so much ....I'm excited to see it done .My cupboards are painted an ugly color .They aren't in bad shape but just that kind of fake stuff you mentioned , no water damage .Our floor peeled up after our bathroom flooded the house . I want to put that tile that looks like wood floors because it's less expensive and durable ( easy to install ).
Thank you for your great encouraging video . It looks great .Your parents must be so happy.

    • @TheDIYCottage
      @TheDIYCottage  6 лет назад +1

You can do it! Just take it a piece at a time and take your time! The wood look tile is awesome! I’d love to install those in our house whenever we buy one 😊

I can't recommend "wood" tile enough! I have them in the majority of my apartment - entrance hallway, bathroom, kitchen, dining and living room. I wish I could attach pictures in yt comments to show you. When we renovated, i wanted a seamless transition between the kitchen and the living room area, it is basically just one big room and no kitchen bar or anything to divide the space. I hated the way every transition from tile to wood floor looked, and I knew we were gonna have a messy drooling dog, so I went for the wood look tile everywhere. I don't worry about water damage, restaining every couple of years and other problems wood flors have. In the winter when I have mud and water on my shoes, I don't have to have a mat by my door, I just wipe the floor with a rag. Cleaning is a breeze. I drop food on the floor all the time, my bf and guests walk around with shoes on, the aforementioned dog drools everywhere, and it all just wipes off.

They aren’t really into the painted cabinets look 😊 Trust me I would have painted if they liked that look! But it’s their house so I wanted to do what they would actually like 😜
