Feels like Blanc was teasing Marta, as if to tell her to change those sneakers! 15:51 "Something is afoot." 16:07 "... the truth falls at my feet." 20:13 "game is afoot, eh Watson?"
Pretty much all murder mysteries are homages to Agatha Christie. She pretty much defined the genre. The fact that they literally showed you how he died 1/3 of the way through and STILL had a compelling mystery to unravel was just amazing. Especially to people used to mysteries.
Interesting, did we have any murder mysteries like that before her? Like when in school we read that story of Siegfried the dragonslayer and each chapter started with spoilers to avoid any tension, the opposite we would expect today.
Fun Fact: The lawyer is played by the legendary Frank Oz. You might not recognize him, but you've almost definitely heard him: He's the voice of Yoda. He also voiced a bunch of characters on The Muppet Show (Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, & Animal) & Sesame Street (Bert, Grover, & the Cookie Monster)...
i know frank oz from yoda and fozzie bear.. and i absolutely love his DO NOT GIVE A FUCK attitude ... (did you recognize him in 'Blues brothers' ... the um... used condom scene?
This is one of my favorites. The casting of Chris Evans is brilliant... "You're going to like this guy and trust him because he's Chris Evans, even though you shouldn't"
I do so love the double genre subversion of this film-switching from a mystery, to a thriller, then back to a mystery....& I love the fact that nobody in the family actually knows where Marta is originally from 😆
So happy to see you react to this. "Knives Out" is one of my favorites. You have to ask yourself how much love and empathy Harlan had for Marta to come up with that plan to make sure she wouldn't get into trouble. LOL The only person you didn't guess was the great grandmother.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in every one of Rian Johnson's movies. At the beginning of the movie Marta's sister is watching a TV show on her computer. JGL is the one saying "We have the nanny cam footage".
I love that Benoit Blanc is a modern Hercule Poirot. He's eccentric but brilliant. Really excited for the series to continue with Glass Onion. For the roots of RJ's detective fascination - Brick, with Joseph Gordon Levitt. It's a neo-noir detective movie set in high-school. Really great stuff.
Knives Out was the last movie I saw in theater before Covid. Watching Daniel Craig in this role shows how he’s more than just a hunky James Bond. I also like how Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette and Don Johnson allow themselves to be old in this movie. They were drop dead beautiful in their youth and are aging gracefully.
For anybody that wants to give this wonderful film a rewatch, writer/director Rian Johnson released a commentary track for free online that is super insightful and super fun! Highly recommended to any fan of this movie!
Homage was played to "Clue" twice in this movie, "He lives on a Clue board" and the end with the portraits of the actors turning around... when Jen says Ana de Armas (Marta) is beautiful, I thought so are you Jen Murray
Jenn I laughed out loud at the case with a hole in the middle of it, a doughnut, Jen: "I want a doughnut " too funny and spontaneous. lol so many doughnut holes,
Do we not know who Daniel Craig is yet? Half of my enjoyment was seeing “James Bond” lose himself in this role. This quickly became one of my all-time favorite movies.
"Clue" (1985); "The Maltese Falcon" (1941); "Zodiac" (2007); "Charade" (1963); "Laura" (1944); "Detective Pikachu" (2019); "Sherlock Holmes" (2009); "Brick" (2005); and "The Great Muppet Caper" (1981) are some whodunit films I want to toss out there for possible reactions.
So glad you like whodunnits! There seems to be a renaissance in recent years, and Knives Out was such a breath of fresh air. Yes, do watch Clue! And perhaps also Murder on the Orient Express (2017) if you haven't seen it -- gorgeous movie, terrific cast, and (to my surprise) a portrayal of Hercule Poirot that I enjoyed.
Just think of how much love and respect Harlan had for Marta. He planned his own death and her alibi even though they both thought she accidentally overdosed him. Check out The Game with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn. Another movie with a twist, April Fool's Day.
That actually added emphasis to Harlan wanting Marta to have the inheritance. If he had called the ambulance instead of committing suicide, he would have kept everything for a few years longer. He wanted Marta to have the inheritance right then and there.
It's so much fun seeing you react to this, Jen! Although you talk a lot (which is your job), you actually managed to get through this convoluted mystery without jabbering over any reveals or important clues. Very few reactors can do this. I'm enjoying your stuff more every time I watch! BTW, I found it interesting that Ana de Armas was the unsung "star" of this movie in 2019, and that she also showed up with Daniel Craig in "No Time to Die" (2021). They work well together.
Favorite Murder Mystery of All-Time Jen is the original Swedish Version of "The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo" starring Noomi Rapace.2nd runner up has got to be "Murder b Decree" starring Christopher Plummer(who was in Knives Out),James Mason,Donald Sutherland and an All-Star cast which is basically Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper and him solving the infamous White Chapel Murders in London.Directed by Bob Clark(A Christmas Story,Porky's).
Absolutely watch it again! It’s amazing on a second (and third) watch, you’ll pick out so many of the details. I love this movie, it’s so funny and clever and the writing, acting, directing, sets, and lighting are all incredible.
Yes, VCR and cassette tape and even floppy disks used magnetic surface to store information (sound, video or software). By running a magnet over the surface you delete the information.
Wow wow wow what an awesome reaction Jen I loved seeing you collecting the clues and trying to figure the mystery out and your delight in the reveal it's such a clever reveal too 👌 . Yes you sure do need to watch clue and as I mention a lot the 2nd knives out movie glass onion you will love both without question. This was one of my favourites of yours Jen truly epic I loved it Ty for the fun time you're the best best best

Awesome reaction. Even though I knew the answer your energy and excitement drew me in again. I remember watching this when it came out and my wife and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, and I'm no sleuth, I recall figuring it out as Marta discovered the housemaid at the old laundromat, who said forcefully, "Hugh did this!". "You" and "Hugh" are JUST the type of homophonic words to listen for during intense moments in a murder mystery. But, though I knew she said "Hugh", I didn't have ALL the answers on HOW he did it. Again, AWESOME reaction!
As soon as I saw this pop up after Simone and George reacted to it I just had to rewatch your reaction Jen it's so friggin good and seeing you completely immersed is wonderful I can almost hear your brain gears turning figuring things out 🙂 one of my favourite reactions you have done and one i shall watch over and over 🔥🍩🔥🍩🔥🍩 cheers Jen this was again awesome 🔥💙
I just watched this movie last night and I loved it! And I had a feeling that you would too, based on the mystery of the story, and wittiness of the dialog and quirky characters! Also, have you ever seen The Italian Job? It is the definitive "small car chase scene" movie!
Daniel Craig is back in another ‘Knives Out’ mystery. Learn everything you need to know about ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ here. Knives Out was one of moviegoers’ favorite films and 2019. And now director Rian Johnson is back with another case to solve with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
Thanks, Jen! Did you know the sequel to this, GLASS ONION, is set to release this December? 🔍 #KnivesOut Since you mentioned, CLUE (1985), yes, I think you'd love it... it's more comedic than this. Another one you might enjoy is DEATHTRAP (1982).
Knives Out and Glass Onion are Rian Johnson's homages to the mysteries of Agatha Christie. Benoit Blanc himself is a variation of the traditional gentleman sleuth, not unlike Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot (see Murder On The Orient Express and Death On The Nile). Johnson's Benoit Blanc films are also an indictment of the wealthy, which is a common theme in Agatha Christie's mysteries as well. The house is an homage to the Sidney Lumet classic Sleuth, which starred a young Michael Caine opposite Sir Laurence Olivier. The board game Clue (from which the film is inspired) was itself inspired the works of Agatha Christie, not only the Poirot mysteries, but other titles as well, such as "And Then There Were None".
You should check out Rian Johnson's first film BRICK. It stars Joseph Gordon Levitz as a classic noir detective only set up in a high school setting. It's low budget but it's great.
You must, must watch Clue. It is brilliant. I would also recommend Gosford Park (2001). It's a clever murder-mystery, with a lot of other clever stuff as well.
I feel like you'd really enjoy a UK 90s show called Jonathan Creek. Lots of weird deaths/murders that the lead has to solve and there's always a really fun explanation at the end.
If you’d ever be willing to go back to the 30s, in spite of fewer viewers, here are two good ones. Hey Jen, Great reaction video as always! If you want to watch more murder mysteries, check out Chris Evans in Sunshine. Also, "L.A. Confidential", (Russell Crowe), "Shutter Island" (with Leonardo DiCaprio) and "Memento." All would be great reaction videos, especially "Shutter Island" and "L.A. Confidential".
This movie was such a wonderful surprise. I had thought with all those stars, they must be covering for a crappy script. Ha! Wonderful surprise. And someone get Jen a hunky doughnut!
Clue the game, which spawned the movie was itself a homage to the works of Agatha Christie, who pretty much invented the detective mystery of this type. Some lists quote Christie as being the second best selling author of all time, after Shakespeare.
Great job Jen! Nice modern mystery. Love the cast. The Blanc accent seemed forced to me. Could have been more subtle. Other stories. Chris Reeves, " Deathtrap ". "Murder by death", big cast, murder spoof. 2022" death on the nile"nice rendition.
I remembered what Harlan said about Ransom, “He plays life like it’s a game without consequences until you can no longer tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.” Brilliant foreshadowing! when Marta threw up on Ransom that was actually baby food mixed with water. Knowing that makes it easier to watch. The movie was an homage to Agatha Christie novels. Have you read Agatha Christie? Her works broke the rules of the mystery genre; she became known as The Queen of Crime. Her novels go from 1920-1970s. Actress who played Marta gave a phenomenal performance! Glad they cut away to her reaction to the suicide; the look of horror on her face was outstanding! Like Blanc said, Harlan’s demise was the result of “a tragedy of errors.” When he pointed out how Marta could visually spot the differences between the morphine and the correct medication, he said it so quickly. Needed subtitles for that. Can’t wait for the sequel! Glass Onion. Turns out that’s a Beatles song!
If you rewatch the first time Blanc meets Marta, almost the instant they are on screen together he looks down and you can see him (silently) notice the blood on her shoe.
WOW!!!Marta gets the whole Kitten-Kaboodle!!!This film reminds me of "Greedy" with Michael J Fox and Kirk Douglas and Olivia D'Abo except more serious and a murder took place.DonJohnson is a long ways away from his Miami Vice days. But he looks good.
Funny enough, near the beginning of the movie, Harlan actually complains about Ransom that he couldn't tell the difference between a stage knife and a real one.. that is why the prop knife is so important in the end..
Who-dun-its are far a few in between. This one was incredible to watch. Great ensemble cast. Daniel Craig in his 2nd best role since protraying James Bond. He and Ana de Armas (Marta) co-starred in Bond 25:No Time to Die. When they announced the sequel with Daniel Craig reprising his role, I was ecstatic. Entitled "Glass Onion:A Knives Out Mystery" and it'll Netflix during holidays of this year.
This was a fun movie. It actually is more of a homage to classic Agatha Christie mysteries, which were formatted just like this, with a dozen suspects and an eccentric detective. Miss Marple was my favorite.
You would probably enjoy the 1979s version of Murder on the Orient Express. A fantastic movie and, unlike the recent version, is loyal to Agatha Christie’s book.
Fun watch Jen - admittedly mysteries are a chore for me - way too many red herrings/false leads/everyone's a liar tropes - but this film truly out does it self largely to a great crackerjack cast 7 direction. CLUE is more or less a tongue-thru-cheek spoof of the genre (um based on a baord game too) but sure check it out too.
For fans of "Who Dunnit" movies I suggest an old classic "And Then There Were None". It's based on Agatha Christie's novel of the same name. There is a later remake called "Ten Little Indians" and while a good movie it pales in comparison to the original. It will keep you guessing until the end.
I'm surprised you didn't comment on Daniel Craig, who most people only remember as a super cynical, gritty version of James Bond, playing the laid back, southern speaking gentleman detective, and clearly having a hell of a lot of fun doing it. Though if you havn't seen any of the Daniel Craig Bond movies, I suspect there's less impact. Though one thing you missed, which admittedly was hard to spot, is that the portrait of Harlan started out scowling, and ended with a slight smirk.
Feels like Blanc was teasing Marta, as if to tell her to change those sneakers!
15:51 "Something is afoot."

Ana de Armas (Marta) is going to be a huge star. Amazing actress. She just worked with Daniel Craig in his final 007 movie.
She's now playing Marilyn Monroe in a streaming movie.
Agreed, she's beautiful and a good actress
Going? She's already there! The amount of work she has completed, and has lined up. She has arrived!
Yeah a bit late on this prediction. Who doesn’t already love her?
Too late. She is.
I highly recommend "Murder by Death" from 1976! Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness, Peter Falk, David Niven, Maggie Smith, Truman Capote, James Cromwell...

Absolutely, I vote for this one. It's a treasure. :)

You should definitly see the Clue movie, if you haven't. In a similar vein, Only Murders in the Building is a great show.
If you want to see something similar, watch "The Murder on the Orient Express" or "Death on the Nile", both from the 70s.
Murder mystery movies? Like ... Hercules Poirot, Miss Marle, Sherlock Holmes and so on?
the old man was played by Christopher Plummer
Another great reaction Jen and I would love to see you react to Clue it is one of my favourite films
For fans of "Who Dunnit" movies I suggest an old classic "And Then There Were None". It's based on Agatha Christie's novel of the same name. There is a later remake called "Ten Little Indians" and while a good movie it pales in comparison to the original. It will keep you guessing until the end.
Great Reaction Jen!!!Loved it!!!
This movie is Very Good - gonna be fun!
Good movie. Saw it - a couple of times - just before covid hit
Great reaction!
I just found your channel and I'm in love. Been watching it all day. You have become my favorite reactor.
Thanks Ashby ☺️👍
Murder By Death 1976 is in the same Vain as Clue
Such a great flick! You should check out Rian Johnson’s earlier movie, Looper.
Another movie you might enjoy, Noises Off
I'm surprised you didn't comment on Daniel Craig, who most people only remember as a super cynical, gritty version of James Bond, playing the laid back, southern speaking gentleman detective, and clearly having a hell of a lot of fun doing it.
Though if you havn't seen any of the Daniel Craig Bond movies, I suspect there's less impact.
Though one thing you missed, which admittedly was hard to spot, is that the portrait of Harlan started out scowling, and ended with a slight smirk.
Never seen any James Bond except Dr No!
While it is not a murder mystery, based on your enjoyment of Knives Out, I think you should look into The Game from 1997, starring Michael Douglas.
The sequel was just confirmed for this December, releasing simultaneously on Netflix and in select theaters.
Great reaction! Can't wait for Clue!
