Isolating the HEART of a WHITE OAK Log

  • In this video, I am attempting to isolate the heart of a white oak log on order to produce cleaner boards from the mill. The heart can make boards split and warp so making sure it shows up in as few boards as possible is very beneficial.

    People who have nothing to do but find fault, and comment negatively, are having personal issues of insufficiency and inferiority, in my experience. CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is one thing, constant ridicule for the sake of self-aggrandizement is quite another. Keep it simple, Troy, and do your thing as you have learned how and fits YOUR needs. Nice channel (real-life).

    They make pants with the protection sewn in. They are extremely comfortable. I highly encourage you and your watchers to use something like this and saw with a buddy so you can extract yourself before you bleed out when (not if) you have an accident. Eye protection and a helmet with hearing protection is also a must.

    I was on a farm, road on an old ford tractor sitting on the rear wheel splash guard going down the road to the corn fields with an old man driving the tractor. We would trim the edges of the fields and gather fire wood. PPE what the hell was that? I am 58 now and still hand sharpen my chaines. Geeeeees lighten up all. You can try to protect everyone, but mother nature will always make a new idiot that cannot get out of its own way. That was an awesome way to center that log. Outstanding video

    This is perfect I just watched an older video where you detailed your barn build and I had some questions because my sawmill will be here in a week or two. Came here to your most recent video to ask where my comment would be seen and IT WAS A SAWMILLING VIDEO WHERE YOU INADVERTENTLY ANSWERED MY QUESTION! Also I've been watching and reading everything I can about milling and this is the first I've seen about jacking up the log to isolate the core. Very good stuff I'm gonna see what other milling videos you have made. Fellow West Virginian land owner here, love your stuff!

    An improvised roller toe board for your sawmill. Good work. In timber framing often they want the heart wood boxed (centered) within in their posts and beams. It helps with ensuring the timber dries evenly and helps with the checking and cracking.

    Thanks. I used to use a bottle jack to level logs on my old mill. New one has hydraulic toe boards, but there are still times when I need to jack the log. It is always good to have other people’s ideas to look at. BTW. I am a professional chainsaw operator. I’ve spent the last month on the couch and a few more weeks yet cause I tried to cut a point on a 2x4 in rubber boots. I at least you are wearing proper foot wear.

    My only beef with the chain saw is that you should let it warm up before going WOT making a cut. Less likely to have an engine failure.

    • @DanDeuel
      @DanDeuel 3 года назад

      Speaking of PPE Karens...I am paranoid of using chains for winching, like he did with the oak, since if a weak one snaps, then steel flies fast! I like using nylon straps. His chain looked pretty good though.

  • @jbbrown7907

    Ouch!
    You couldn't use 7' boards?

  • @Ddontayy
    @Ddontayy 3 года назад

    Oof I understand why folks are yelling at you about your chainsaw usage. Drop starting (pulling the pullcord while holding the saw out in the air) and using your trigger hand to work the chain break are two GREAT ways to lose limbs and digits. Drop starting is dangerous because if for whatever reason the chainbreak is not engaged when you start the saw it is super easy to bury the tip into the ground and cause crazy kickback - arms and necks beware. Using your trigger hand to work the chain break is really dangerous because it is very easy to reach a little too far and cut your fingers to ribbons.
    But like you said, your safety is your choice. This comment just serves to educate my fellow viewers on the risks we are seeing in the video. Use your tools how you'd like, and use your tools as well as you're comfortable with them.

    Nice milling Troy as for chainsaw safety it is important. But which is more important proper knowledge of operation or the gear? I for 20 years worked as a trained professional and when working as a commercial producer I can say gear isn't only important but necessary. But for the casual use not only is the cost of a lot of gear not justified but the time to put it all on as in This case take longer than doing the job. This is where knowledge comes most into play if your a noob and have no clue how to safely handle a saw you better put on all the armour possible. But if you have saw experience and know how and what to watch for doing small jobs safety gear is just a nuisance. The one exception is eye protection one should never run a saw without eye protection. As sawdust in the eyes is one of the most common issues. Doesn't take much a pair of glasses or even sun glasses will protect against sawdust. Sure those are not OSHA approved but we are only protecting against sawdust not branches and flying chainsaws. So bottom line noobs put on armour those with experience use descreation depending on one's experience.

    Oh my, I can't believe you cut that so long. Now you have to cut it again to make a firewood round. Naa no matter I am just busting your chops. If I were you, you should have made that cut in short shorts and flip flops and a tank top, with big long necklaces hanging, and oh yeah set your beer can on the log before you cut it. LOL 😂😂😂🤣😉
