    Hi sir, I have a usb wifi with chipset rtl8811cu. Can I setup it like a AP

    • @OpenwrtLuci

      Yes, it is possible to set up a USB Wi-Fi adapter with the RTL8811CU chipset as an access point (AP) on certain operating systems. However, the process may vary depending on your specific operating system and the available drivers and software.
      Here is a general outline of the steps you can follow to set up your USB Wi-Fi adapter as an access point:
      1. Check driver compatibility: Ensure that your operating system supports the RTL8811CU chipset and has the necessary drivers installed. You may need to download and install specific drivers for your adapter if they are not already included in your operating system.
      2. Install access point software: Look for access point software that is compatible with your operating system and supports the RTL8811CU chipset. Some popular options include hostapd (Host Access Point Daemon) for Linux and Connectify for Windows. Follow the installation instructions provided with the software.
      3. Configure access point settings: Once the access point software is installed, you will need to configure its settings. This typically involves specifying the wireless network name (SSID), security settings (such as password and encryption type), and other parameters. The configuration process may vary depending on the software you are using. Consult the documentation or online resources specific to your chosen access point software for detailed instructions.
      4. Start the access point: After configuring the access point settings, you can start the access point service. This will enable your USB Wi-Fi adapter to function as an access point, broadcasting the configured wireless network for other devices to connect to.
      Keep in mind that setting up a USB Wi-Fi adapter as an access point may require administrative privileges and advanced technical knowledge. Additionally, not all USB Wi-Fi adapters or operating systems may support this functionality. It's recommended to consult the documentation and resources specific to your adapter and operating system for detailed instructions and compatibility information.

      If you have a USB Wi-Fi adapter with the RTL8811CU chipset and you want to set it up as an access point using OpenWrt, here are the general steps you can follow:
      1. Check OpenWrt compatibility: Ensure that your specific USB Wi-Fi adapter with the RTL8811CU chipset is supported by OpenWrt. Visit the OpenWrt website or the OpenWrt device database to search for your adapter model and verify its compatibility.
      2. Install OpenWrt: If you haven't already, install OpenWrt on a compatible device such as a router or a single-board computer. Follow the official OpenWrt documentation or specific instructions for your device to perform the installation.
      3. Install necessary packages: Once OpenWrt is installed, you'll need to install the required packages to set up the access point functionality. Connect to your OpenWrt device via SSH or the web interface, and then install the following packages using the package manager (opkg):
      ````
      opkg update
      opkg install hostapd
      opkg install wpa-supplicant
      ```
      These packages include hostapd, which is the access point daemon, and wpa-supplicant, which is used for managing Wi-Fi connections.
      4. Configure hostapd: Edit the hostapd configuration file to set up your access point. Use a text editor to modify the `/etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf` file. Here's an example configuration:
      ````
      interface=wlan0
      ssid=YourNetworkName
      hw_mode=g
      channel=6
      auth_algs=1
      wpa=2
      wpa_passphrase=YourPassword
      wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
      wpa_pairwise=TKIP
      rsn_pairwise=CCMP
      ```
      Adjust the values according to your preferences, such as the SSID (network name) and password. Save the file when you're done.
      5. Start hostapd: Once the configuration is set, start the hostapd service using the following command:
      ````
      /etc/init.d/hostapd start
      ```
      This will enable the access point functionality on your USB Wi-Fi adapter.
      6. Verify and troubleshoot: Check if your access point is functioning correctly by searching for the SSID on another Wi-Fi device. If you encounter any issues, refer to the OpenWrt documentation, community forums, or online resources for troubleshooting assistance.
      Please note that these steps provide a general guideline, and the exact configuration and commands may vary depending on your specific OpenWrt version and device. It's recommended to consult the OpenWrt documentation and resources specific to your setup for detailed instructions and troubleshooting guidance.

      @@OpenwrtLuci thank you very much for this guide, I have an openwrt router (armv8) doesn't have wifi card, I just checked it and i think it is not supported from openwrt because I can't find the firmware for rtl8818cu from the packages repository (opkg). I also have another openwrt wireless router, the xiaomi 3G (with usb port). Can I use a usb to usb cable to make this router an AP?
