Loads hating on this Mk 8 but I actually love it, can't wait to pick my new one up Friday
How are you liking it so far? Got one coming myself
@@caffeineisking8132 Enjoying it Ryan, 2.5K miles in but getting to venture out more and on some country roads now that it's Sunny 😊, Handling is great and powering out of corners is the best I have felt, good on fuel when in Eco and comfort mode 38mpg I'm getting but when you want that fun and switch to sport. Different car, enough power for me on these uk roads but it's built as a allrounder 😊
@@sitelford8469 sounds good to me! Have you had any issues with the software at all? If you join the gti UK owners Facebook page there's an alarming amount of things going wrong with people's cars I was dreading mine
@@caffeineisking8132 Honestly mate I'm on a few forums and it's hit or miss, I've had no problems on my software on 1666 just sometimes front assist but some have had many more problems, I've been lucky I think but depends on car year make and what head unit you have in to update the software. I know lots of people that haven't had any probs, you have to think forums are there for people to report them, I know mine inside out now so if you need any help with anything when you get it give me shout
Mine is coming on Monday 😂
I have a Mk7.5 and I really enjoy the DSG more than manual box. It’s faster and makes better noises! Plus it gives you a nice cruising option in traffic and on the highway.
DSG all the way for me, now that I own one. It's the best of both worlds for me. (Manual and Auto ---> Paddle shifters are FUN... just ask Lamborghini owners! :-P )
The wheels and steering wheel are RANCID. Looks a good bit of kit though 👌
Could not agree more
What does rancid mean?
@@av1332 www.dictionary.com/browse/rancid#:~:text=having%20a%20rank%2C%20unpleasant%2C%20stale,and%20stale%3A%20a%20rancid%20smell.
Agree mate worst wheels on a GTi
Feels cheaply made and awful alloys
Youre still a good ol VW boy at heart
Seems to be a great car! But aesthetically, inside and out, a 7.5 GTI is superior in my opinion. Especially TCR
No, Clubsport is the Ultimate
@@kimiroihanz9924 nah the tcr is just the new clubsport however the clubsport s is special
What is TCR?
Look at the Mk8 GTI Clubsport and the 7.5 TCR not the regular mk8. You can't tell me that the TCR is more aggressive. It's just a 7.5 GTI with more power and hideous seats
@@Josh_0579 hideous seats 🤣🤣
Probaby why Mk7 and 7.5 used prices are quite strong, you'd just go for one of those
That is where I would put my money or a low mileage clubsport.
20k for lightly used (under 10k miles) base 2018 gti
@@lethalpenguin61 what are u Talkin about ????
In Germany its 25-30 K for a 2018 gti performance under 20.000 kilometers
@@user-tx9ko4mm1t im in the midwest United States
When the MK7 came out I much preferred the MK6 but after seeing more on the road I preferred the MK7 by far. I am sure the same thing will happen with this one, in about a year I will much much prefer this to a MK7 when I get more familiar with all the variants etc. First impressions however are really good, sounds good too especially for having a GPF
Or maby well just Skip a generation. Because idont think this will ever grow on me as i own the best looking GTI Clubsport MK7. If you wanna impress me try to beat that one. Which is why im waiting for MK9's and well see wat happens. I also wanna say Golf R's are getting way to expensive, for an MK8 you can have a BMW M2.
@@tredfxman I am waiting for you to reply to this comment in two years and tell me your opinions then......
@@tredfxman I'm afraid it won't be an mk9
So, have they grown on you?
Everyone who recently bought a mk7.5:
"The styling is horrible, look at those wheels! I'm so glad I bought my mk7.5"
They wouldn't be lying to be honest
Its the truth though so......
You are completely right! They are so funny!
The irony is, the vast majority who complain can't even afford these cars. Go figure
@@Alby911 i own a MK7 GTI and i think the MK8 looks like shit. The styling on the MK7/7.5 is far superior.
Honestly.. I like that car really, beautiful design 👌🏽👌🏽
Drove this car while my focus st4 was in the garage for a week. This car has way more than 245bhp. It pulls very hard low down. I say 265-275 more like. It’s one of the best cars I’ve ever driven. Pulls hard as the focus and I think it’s more power at the low end than the ST. But it needs one of those vw performance exhausts would complete it. It’s amazing car but get the comfort mode on this car because it’s hard if you don’t have it. The dsg also fast. I’d give it a 92/100 but needs that exhaust from vw. Pulls very hard low down and I would say it doing 5.5 to 60mph. No way is it any slower. Once it hooks up that thing flys
So you can't touch your mobile device when driving but can fiddle with the touchscreen on infotainment system just to adjust the temperature control?
Nailed it John. It's insanity, you have to faff through about 7 clicks to alter the ESC. This is not progress.
The first time I saw the Mark 7 I was blown away and fell in love with the 7.5 hence I’m on my 2nd golf r. This however has left me puzzled at VW ‘a ideas on style and presence. This car lacks in the outside as much has it does on the India. Real shame because I’ve always been a die hard fan.
Hope it grows on me!
I think these are underrated. Seen a track test on another channel where one beat the bmw 128ti by around a second and a half on a lap despite giving away 25 bhp. These are quick for the quoted BHP.
That front black grill makes it look comical. Can’t help thinking it’s a giant mouth trying to smile at me.. lol!
Doesn’t sound too bad for an OPF 🤔
Thats because its a vw they probably cheated around it
@@landlordfortenants3256 hahaa nice one 🤣
0:29 "Beijing Stoke" 😂
Much prefer my standard Mk 7 GTI this looks like an Electric Car its Pony !!! With Petrol cars finishing in ten years the Mk 7 will go down as the last True GTI and I'm the Proud owner
Me to
The new shape is going to have to grow on me but it def looks better than the new S3. They ruined that car with the new body style imo.
Hi Luke, nice you still like the GTI after owning an R but for me the mk 7.5 is still a much better looking car,In fact I only like the mk 8 from the rear.It seems like the 8 is just a super face lift of the 7.5 with a lot of cost cutting,I am happy to keep my 7.5 TCR GTI.
Top review of this fantastic car
Brilliant presentation
Thank you:)
Great video. But nothing about this car is worth the extra money compared to the mk7.5 or a Leon cupra 290. (I have had owned a mk7 and currently drive a 290).
Coming from mk7 gti owner, this is so much uglier. VW going backward.
Looks are subjective and the changes are nowhere near radical enough to warrant harsh opinions. Personally, I don't care for it either way.
I really don't get the hate for the new Mark 8. I can see why people would say the 7/7.5 is a better looking car but think it's complete overkill to suggest the new model is ugly...
Nice review. I'm very interested to see what the interior quality of the MK8's are. I've heard from other reviews that there's some unfortunate cost cutting. Overall, I like the design of the interior though the bezel around the infotainment/gauge cluster looks a bit cheap. The exterior styling is okay but IMO not an improvement over the outgoing car.
The car 🚗 s very quick
To sum it up why this car has failed;
-no gas struts
-cheap tacky seats
-even cheaper looking screens with a free android theme you can download on every phone
The gas struts should be standard i noticed on my polo its not got gas struts bit cheap for a top of the line gti
Don’t forget then on existent sound from the OPF, long long gearing making it feel slow, cheaped out interior materials..
Was the Golf R variant not introduced with the MK4 as an R32 ? And later carried over to MK5 also as R32. Remember the R32 was ditched because of the change of the engine to a 2 liter from the V6 3.2 liter
Yes, you are quite correct. The Golf MK 4 R32 was the first R car introduced for the 2003 model year. R stands for "rennsport", which is German for racing.........
Why is the exhaust start up raspier than my mk7.5 GTI?? Thought newer cars were supposed to sound worse not better!
Get a middle silencer delete on your mk7.5 cost my friend £80 and sounds so much better. You won’t be disappointed
@@jim8462 wow thanks 🙏 I going to do that ! 😊
Classic resonator delete - VAG sport do a brilliant one - have one on my 2016 s3 and has made a huge difference - possible drone on Moterway but so worth it
@@jim8462 what , do you mean the resonator delete mate ?
@@aeroeng3 it’s the middle silencer on the exhaust. All they do is cut it out and weld a bit of pipe in its place.
Why don’t I like the dash
Very nice car! Congratulation !
No gas strut on the bonnet and engine cover is garbage. Where else have they hidden the cost cuts , it’s a bit of a worry
These generic versions of previous fun great looking cars are killing me.
I find it mind boggling that we can buy this and other similar cars for 30k plus be driving down the road then the new Toyota Yaris GR will come and beat up these generic hot hatchbacks
Think the Yaris GR is fab.
Course a gr would its a rally homolgation
Great review. Camera work and all. I like the MK styling compared to other generations. Can't wait for it to get to the USA.
Thank you!
Cost saving is very eminent...where is the GTI branding on the doors?
Nice review. Like the new S3 not keen on the new golf front bumper. S3 remind me of Hyundai and this one Renault megane rs at the bottom.
Never really been a fan of the golfs apart from the MK4 R32, but the interior game has really been stepped up compared to it’s predecessor and it’s tasteful! The sound is decent for an OPF car too. The looks are daring for a golf, but I’m not sure if I like or it or not/
Yeah my GTI only runs the quarter in 13.1, glad it's slow and good for back roads?
"go-kart for the back roads" ? You're now speaking like you own a few supercars and are Chris Harris.
Hi Luke, can you tell us which road+area it was that you took at around 5:01 ? I love the up+down compression and bend at that timecode and would love to do a cinematic-esque video there with my car! Also, thank you for the informative first drive 👍
Hey James, thanks! Drop me a message on Instagram (@hampshirephotography)
Car makers are in a tough spot. If they only make slight changes, they have done enough, if they make changes they spoiled the car. I think the new GTI design is challenging, but I cannot agree with hater comments and say that VW have completely blown it. Looking forward to the R, since I doubt the TCR or Clubsport will make state side.
First video I've watched of the new GTI. Watching a video of it, the car looks wider, lower, and MUCH more handsome than the press pictures, which didn't do the car any favors. The rear of the car still looks like an SUV, and I REALLY wish that they didn't put gloss black finish on touch points. The air con controls, key fob, etc, are just going to be a MESS of fingerprints. Still, it feels like at least a technology upgrade from the mk 7/7.5. Nice video. Thanks for the info.
MK8 🤮🤮🤮
Not sure. Could be why my local dealer is chasing me to trade in my MK7.5 GTD in , as dealers are struggling to shift the new MK 8,s. VW should not have remove all the buttons. Really know thinking of a t-roc r
Great video, would be good to see you do the same with the mk8 GTD
Thank you!
Not keen on those alloys, looks great from the back but unsure about the look of the front
owning a gti is like being in a club
That is a whole lot of honey combe on the front! 😂
My dream car 😍 i will own this car one day
Center knobs and buttons save lives, touch screens don´t.
the design has grown on me a lil 7.5 is still nicer tho
MK7,5 it's Amazing Awesome 😃😍❤️
Had a look at that car at the Martins dealership in Basingstoke..I thought it looked really ugly..bought a late 7.5 instead which drives so well , looks way better and actually has some buttons which I prefer. The mk7.5 feels better made too imho and I’ve saved £10k ..result!
Nice video 👍🏼
Thanks!
the new clubsport looks sick compared to the normal gti
Ok so I’m not a fan of this new Golf GTI. Is it me or does it look soft? Don’t like the wheels, don’t like the front or rear lights either and the grill just looks wrong to me. The previous generation 7 and 7.5 look much more aggressive and bang on. I’d rather buy one of those than this new one. My opinion of course but just looks to ordinary and not aggressive
Verdict? Your new car?
Does choosing the manual make you more of a connoisseur
I think vw messed it up the golf imo ...better looking cars out there for less money !!!
Wonder if you'd do a review of the id3?
Cupra FTW
am sure Mk8 will grow on us after all its a GTI and VW have form
definitely a vehicle that could become popular in the months to come! great video 👍
Sound insulation seems poor, I can hear a lot of road and tyre noise
Probably the tyres , had 4 GTI'S and tyre roar has been an issue on some brands .
Give mea Mk1 gti over that anyday 👍
A step backwards for vw
Hate the way they are are taking the buttons away .You should be able to adjust the cars characteristics fairly easy while driving without taking eye off the road. This has kinda put me off this car.
From the back looks like a mk7 that someone’s rear end
looks like a fish, hate it. Going to previous gens
That's exactly what I just did. 2 weeks ago I bought a Gte 7.5. The last in Spain. Great price and for me much better interior and exterior design. And with buttons!!!
@@miguelmoratal2931 nice! Congratulations!
Love everything except that gear select lever - they’re awful. And oh look! Piano black on the key fob now so even that now gets scratched when you breath on it.
After watching golf vids a lot, front has grown on me, promised myself to buy the next gen but held back on the thought bec of the headlight design, and some other new features. i would still want buttons and knobs and mk horn design
The Wheel look like Electric car 🤔
I actually like the body styling quite a lot but those wheels are grot. They make the car look much less aggressive in my opinion. Nice video mate!
Thank you :)
The EA888 engine is infamous? I thought it was well respected throughout the VAG group.
Ubiquitous, maybe.
I see from your glee at driving this GTi you’re missing the VW thing again.... FWD and LSD on this beat the crap out of a lary tail happy RWD beemer?
Please VW same model launch in India I'm big fan PoLo GTI👌👌😊😊😊
It wont sell very well in india tho
great review mate
Thanks!
You can clearly tell that the MK8 has been designed with efficiency and aerodynamics in mind. So for a sporty version I think they’ve done a fair job to be honest. The back of it looks good in my opinion it’s just the front that is perhaps not to everyone’s tastes. Although some mention about the bonnet not having a telescopic strut, this is true. However, at least the bonnet release is still on the correct side unlike on SKODA and SEAT equivalent cars. Also, they fail to notice that there is now two bonnet catches to keep the bonnet latched when driving, instead of one on previous Golfs (that’s Audi R8 stuff), and they all have digital dashboards as standard which is what people want. It’s same story with the rest of the MK8. You loose some you win some. But the whole thing with the Golfs has always been if it isn’t broke don’t fix it..
Most Audis have had two bonnet catches for years...........
Why no fucking buttons for the usual most used features?
Amazing how the new 308 GTi is quicker and a better performance than a Golf GTI and 10k less, I think its disappointing but thats only my opinion
Looks better as well
@Kris Morales The peugeot GTi would knock spots of the performance of this golf , weather its a French car or not. French hot hatches are known for being good! The Megane RS doesn't hold the fwd record around the nurburgring for nothing lol
@@ResevoirGod defo 👌
Why you blank out the badge on the steering wheel. We know it's a vw. But why have that when you can have the Skoda VRS. Same car and 10k less.
Look closer, it’s not blurred out 👍🏻
They just cheaped out on that as well and made it a sticker
It’s not a sticker. It’s a black chrome logo
hmmm, adding more power to the car doesn't automatically make it "better". Yes, it makes the car faster, but that does not mean the same thing as better. Look at the transition from the Mk3 to Mk4 GTI or better yet, the Mk2 GTI (16v) to the Mk3. Design wise, the Mk8 is a flop IMHO. The front is upside down and the rear is barely changed over the Mk7/7.5. How the car works as a whole should determine if the car is better; not just the power increase.
Hi This GTI reminds me of my new 1988 VW Jetta GTI about £8K with the tartan seats no synchromesh in certain gears!! I must like VW and Golfs about 6 later with a now discontinued and under rated Golf SV GT EVO. It is surprising and not often reviewed when it is sport mode it is like a GTI !!
Upgraded brakes? What size are the discs?
Show us the key
I feel like look wise the MK6 interiors has been the nicest interiors so far
I'll stick with my TRoc R... it doesn't look special enough
It's not my cup of tea to be honest but i can see why someone would buy it! I feel like this car is kinda like the s3 in a way... looks have to grow on me 🤣 absolutely loved the video dude keep it up 👍🙌
Thank you buddy :)
The Clubsport will be the one to have I feel. The power and looks are superior.
Don't like the front bumper design
Manual transmission is standard in every car that’s offered in a manual. Here in Canada we pay an extra 1k or 2k Im not sure which one is it but we pay for it like we pay for the dsg here but not for the manual.
You rather get a cupra 290
The mirrors give light on the floor of the gti or someting?
Great video pal
Thank you!
Looks great, I have been thinking about buying one of these for a while... Uhm!
Over done it on the driving lights at the front. Also interior is pretty meh... Especially that cheap looking steering wheel lol.
Those standard wheels have to go! Horrible!
Infamous?
Don’t fix something that ain’t broken
Looks high standard inside just like how a vw should be
In essence, it's just another Golf GTI 🤷♂️ nothing truly sets this apart from the mk7
That's the point of it surely just more modernised.
Some slowwww standard 0 60 figures for a 2020 gti
Yet it’s quicker than the MK7.5 equivalent by .2 of a second?
@@hampshirephoto Here in the US, most of the major car magazines got 5.6 - 5.8 second 0-60 on the MK7.5 so how is the MK8 slower with more HP??
I wouldn’t be surprised if they did a refresh in 2 years.
