For anybody curious about the inspiration behind the licks, this is my best guess. 0:00 - 0:15 As I Am intro 0:15 - 0:40 Glass Prison intro solo 0:40 - 0:50 Constant Motion (main riff) 0:50 - 1:15 On the Backs of Angels solo 1:15 - 1:25 As I Am solo 1:25 - 1:50 I have no idea, sounds like a solo from Black Clouds 1:50 - 2:35 backing track from In the Name of God but solo sounds like A Change of Seasons 2:35 - 2:50 Constant Motion riff 2:50 - 3:10 This Dying Soul ending
1:25 - 1:50 is definitely from black clouds and man... isnt this the best riff ever ? i mean it is almost as powerful as ruclips.net/video/AAnIjM3MWUE/видео.html (which is my favorite) not in the same way ofc don't you think ?
I just went to a Dream Theater show in my city and it was amazing! All band members have a lot of technique! Petrucci is certainly one od the best guitar players ever, and Andy James too!
just bought this DVD, totally worth it, such great excersises and andy james is just amazing but everyone knows that, whoever was thinking of getting, def a good idea
Hi Hasan Basri Cekem, Andy James has been playing a very long time, theres no easy way around it, the best way is to practise practise practise! Will send you a link to a list of videos which Andy James explains learning guitar and tips for guitarists. Hope there helpful!
***** It's a combination of the picking hand dampening the strings, the available fingers on the fretting hand also play their part too (especially in sweeping from the high E to the low E). After watching such clean shit like this I decided to completely overhaul my playing after over a decade of bad habits. Play it slow AND clean then go from there.
@@martijnvanspaendonck7989 The thing is he may be way better technically but dont forget what john has already written down. He composed all these beautiful solos riffs and songs. In this case john petrucci is better but just my opinion. Didnt really heard any andy james stuff, i know hes hell of a player but so is john. Johns stuff brought tears of sadness and joy to my eyes. He really can do both.
This is absolutely majestic! the constant motion variation is so killer! and every other part too! Loved the first slower part after the glass prison variation!
When you play it slowly to a metronome or a drum beat, which I prefer, then you will learn it faster than you think :) I already got the intro cleared!
The beginning of the solo is ionspired by "the glass prison" great understanding of petrucci's mechanicals, real sound, great ! Real great solo !! Great riff at the end !
Johndude that would be an ESP Ecplipse II or I not sure, but they are custom and fucking expensive, however you can get a cheap ESP standard eclipse II with the same features for about 1000 i think, though i am not sure or you could get the LTD version which would be above 500, cannot remember the exact price
No fucking way, noob, it's not "basically just the glass prison". First licks are easy AJ version of GP, but the rest are likcs from different DP solos, don't talk shit, u fat fuck xD
I dont know if anyone already said it but this is a neoclassic perfect adptation of the intro to sugar plum fairy by tchaikovsky. Its so good of a lesson that Indont have words.

Zachary Lawrence thx
U are awesome bro
This man is a hardcore fan
1:25 - 1:50 is definitely from black clouds and man... isnt this the best riff ever ? i mean it is almost as powerful as ruclips.net/video/AAnIjM3MWUE/видео.html (which is my favorite) not in the same way ofc don't you think ?
zacharylawrence pattern at 2:31 is from the first solo in endless sacrifice, and the pattern at 1:22 is from damage control
That arpeggio solo run at 1:25sec was simply melodic and outstanding.
More String Skipping then straight Arpeggios.
But yes , outstanding indeed.
There are not many humans on earth that can mimick so many different styles and have the of accuracy as AJ does. Well Done Andy
I just went to a Dream Theater show in my city and it was amazing! All band members have a lot of technique! Petrucci is certainly one od the best guitar players ever, and Andy James too!
If I could "like" your comment from this app then I would do, many times!!
Spurs :D You shouldn't compare god to Andy* fixed
This dude is the 3 finger wizard
A majority of scales, particularly in jazz, heavily emphasis economy picking which incorporates the use of 3 notes per rule
Profit Potato
Funny cause that's my nick name... but for a different reason
I think you meant Michael Schenker

Yeah
no matter how many times or what video i watch with andy james in. im still amazed at his playing, by far the best guitarist ive ever seen
petrucci is love petrucci is life
DENHOLM theDRUNK He is not shrek okay?
Andy is the beast
His touch is just unbelievable
Effortless yet looks so beautifully complex.
My guitar doesn't do that.
Mine as well. I think I need to fix this broken guitar
Lmfao

Where did you get your pact with Satan?
+Hewparu its hard to tell but he actually has a pic of destiny
Fr i need a spot on that list🙏🏼🙏🏼👀
Go to a crossroads 😂
I will find it TOO
at crossroads.
just bought this DVD, totally worth it, such great excersises and andy james is just amazing but everyone knows that, whoever was thinking of getting, def a good idea
and then "constant motion'"s riff and "this dying soul"s at the ending...really nice...it's really on John's style!
I would love to see a G3 with Andy James, John Petrucci and Jeff Loomis!!
Wouldn't that be brilliant!!
Maybe g5 w/ Satch and Kiko?
I appreciate his skills, talent and knowledge. I feel lucky to be able to discover his music
Hate to state the obvious, but this guy is a very good guitarist ..
I never heard anything better than before! Thanks so much and good luck you in the future!!!
Killer playing, Sir. The part from 1:27 - 1:51 is pure beauty!
Amazing! Andy is reserved in heaven. Used his life to the best possible.
that solo between 1:50 and 2:37 is awesome!!!
RumikXxeno what is this song?
Excellent! Glad your finding the DVD helpful - even if it is killing your pinky! All the best!
I could watch Andy shred forever..
It almost looks sped up in a fast forward. Those licks are awesome!
Oh my god.I ll throw my guitar out of the window.Nice performance.

***** yeah. andy uses it when recording, but he can play without it and still be as clean.
*****
Things like that are always possible but harder, guess you just need to be tighter right

John Petrucci is as good as you get but Andy James is right up there in skill level !
Amazing solo !!!!!!
Sounds like themes and variations from Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, Constant Motion, As I Am, and Pull Me Under. Did I miss any?
metropolis, hell's kitchen maybe ...
i've picked up some innocence faded influence because of the string skipping but otherwise you're spot on!
Maybe panic attack?
Pretty damn accurate, definitely heard the intro to constant motion in there.
On the backs of angels
1.27 - 1.50 ! DAMN it Mr Andy James...Excellent JOB!
Technique wise I'd say AJ's in the same league as JP.
Cool jokes around here.
Nah.... andys better way betterrr
Sandarpan Mukherjee I would say he is in a far higher league.
I have to disagree with that

This is more like andy james style
kamikazikaizer yeah
He mixes his style with other guitar players.
So good, so clean is out of this world
well, there's John Petrucci's replacement if he ever leaves DT
+R Bharathkumar I hope he never leaves DT as well. if he does, I'll have to cry myself to sleep for a month
David Lyons I did it when Portnoy left but it lasts forever! :'(
Either him or Marco Sfogli
Petrucci is irreplaceable
No Pettucci, no Dream Theater.
Best guitarrist in the world in terms of techcnic and feeling!
andy has some really strong hands
When that melody kicks in its so inspiring. Nailed Petrucci's style!
More like Andy James style quick licks performance
0:10 the glass prison, 0:40 and 2:36 constant motion. awesome playing!
Well played Mr. James, well played.
I never understood why he didn't use his JP sig in this video. He uses it alot in other quick licks videos, but not in the actual JP lick vid ;p
Frank Homma because the EC-1000 kicks ass
Lmao dude have you ever played a JP? It stomps the EC-1000 as far as craftsmanship and attention to every small detail. They are really a joy to play
The EC-1000 does kick ass, but it’s no JP.
I think it’s mostly because of them pickups that he has on the esp
I just ordered the DVD. It's amazing. I'm playing every day!
these licks probably won't be quick to learn
When you play it slowly to a metronome or a drum beat, which I prefer, then you will learn it faster than you think :) I already got the intro cleared!
Daniel Harvey 3 years later....
any update
@@ChessCat1500 Still Intro :v
i agree with you too
Were you able to?
The beginning of the solo is ionspired by "the glass prison" great understanding of petrucci's mechanicals, real sound, great ! Real great solo !! Great riff at the end !
1:50 money!!!
wat
Andy you are unbelievable. Amazing
I love that motherfucking guitar, it's even prettier than a Gibson.
as you go along you start to realise how unbelievably overrated gibson is, there are so many better guitars than gibbys out there
DENHOLM theDRUNK word
What make is it?
Johndude that would be an ESP Ecplipse II or I not sure, but they are custom and fucking expensive, however you can get a cheap ESP standard eclipse II with the same features for about 1000 i think, though i am not sure or you could get the LTD version which would be above 500, cannot remember the exact price
Johndude It's an LTD EC-1000

This is basically just the glass prison
No fucking way, noob, it's not "basically just the glass prison". First licks are easy AJ version of GP, but the rest are likcs from different DP solos, don't talk shit, u fat fuck xD

Andy your amazing brother.
The first part sounds like Megadeth.

JoelMetal lol and the part after the dissonant bends
Hearing those first couple of notes, I thought, "I think they got title of this video wrong.." That's was some Megadeth-ish shit for sure.
2:06 and same the song dread and the fugitive mind.
Andy James is my Guitar Hero!

The glass prison, love that song:) You nailed the sound of the man himself, JP, cool ending with the "This Dying Soul" lick:)
This is BETTER than Petrucci!

Megadeth wouldn't be this complex
