When he plays parts like that he is normally following the chords, doing different kind of arpeggio extensions (minor, major, minor 7th, major 7th, 9ths etc) aswell as blending in some passing notes that does not belong to the arpeggio. He often play the same thing through octaves aswell.

For anybody curious about the inspiration behind the licks, this is my best guess.
    0:00 - 0:15 As I Am intro
    0:15 - 0:40 Glass Prison intro solo
    0:40 - 0:50 Constant Motion (main riff)
0:50 - 1:15 On the Backs of Angels solo
    1:15 - 1:25 As I Am solo
1:25 - 1:50 I have no idea, sounds like a solo from Black Clouds
1:50 - 2:35 backing track from In the Name of God but solo sounds like A Change of Seasons
    2:35 - 2:50 Constant Motion riff
    2:50 - 3:10 This Dying Soul ending

***** It's a combination of the picking hand dampening the strings, the available fingers on the fretting hand also play their part too (especially in sweeping from the high E to the low E). After watching such clean shit like this I decided to completely overhaul my playing after over a decade of bad habits. Play it slow AND clean then go from there.

In this case john petrucci is better but just my opinion. Didnt really heard any andy james stuff, i know hes hell of a player but so is john. Johns stuff brought tears of sadness and joy to my eyes. Just because you're a diehard dream theater fan doesn't mean that you don't have to admit when you find a guitarist of better technical skill. Andy can play any style of writing, and mimic guitarists perfectly, I do admit, of course JP kicks his ass in writing completely original things and emotional things, but Andy james is better at shredding it up. Not saying that JP isn't good, he's fucking amazing.

I'm sorry. This man is a great player, but I wish they didn't put "Petrucci Style" It's not his style, its the actual licks he has played and twisted very little. I wish they actually asked JP to come in and talk about it lol

What was that band around the nut of the guitar? Isnt that meant to mute strings? How was he able to play clean open strings with that on?

This quick licks is a disappointment. I was expecting much better- especially for Petrucci style as Petrucci is one of Andy's influences. The chords at the beginning and the riff is weak. The arpeggios are just the intro to the glass prison, anyone can google tabs for those. I love quick licks, and lots of the other quick licks of andys, but it seems he didn't put much thought into this one. Granted some of the mid licks are pretty sweet, I don't think I will be adding this one to my repertoire
