Nice review ! That 56mm f1.7 is incredible for the price, but I still think the old 56mm f1.4 is better value overall, it's possible to find it at good price.
It's all a compromise. It depends on whether one shoots a lot at f1.4 - f2.8 or more commonly (like me) in the range f4 -f8 where there is no difference between the two lenses. If I did not already have the 56mm f.4, I would choose this f1.7 model as I value the smaller form factor more than the slightly better fast aperture performance of the f1.4.
@@TheRealRichardWong On 2nd thought, I've seen other reviews with not-so-bad wide-open aperture sharpness... If you could post a link where we can check the raw files of portrait photos shot on 1.7 - then you'd be the best camera reviewer ever!!!!! :)
The "all metal construction" meme is pretty much a red herring. When you have a lens construction that is made out of all Aluminum, you have a huge CTE [coefficient of thermal expansion] mismatch between the "all metal construction" and the glass elements of the optics. Weird things can happen with temperature changes in the environment where/when you are shooting. I live in the Sonoran Desert. The all metal lenses can be a problem shooting in the hottest part of the Summer. Glass-filled composite plastics used in the construction of precision things like camera lenses have a CTE that better matches the CTE of the glass in the optics. - I've not seen many RUclips lens reviews that take design intent and materials science finesse into consideration when it comes to the functional engineering of the lenses.

Wow what a fast lens for such a low price, well done Viltrox! Great review... feels like you're posting these videos faster than Dj Khaled can say 'Another One'. 😂
I am curious to their lens hood, could the f1.7 version use the lens hood on f1.4 version😂. My nephew recently broke that and I ‘m wondering if that could work because it’s not easy to get another one here in Taiwan. But I noticed that they both have the filter size of 52mm and also made by viltrox. The lens hood for f1.4 are sell in viltrox Taiwan for sure 😂
Having a hard time deciding what’s for me between the Viltrox 56mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8. I’m a beginner that’s into street photo but I want to take pictures of my friends and do portraits and my kit lens is the 15-45mm from my xt200. Any input I would GREATLY appreciate!!!
Yeah indoor or in shades wide open it was alright, but outside on sunny days had to stop down to f2.8 to make them disappear or shoot in B&W. Would be nice if they make a mark II of the 23/33/56 with the same good CA control of their newest lens.
How it compare to XC 35mm/F2? Both got the same price in my place, I really wish there's comparison so my spending will be worth. More likely, I always bring my camera for street and car photography....
The 56mm f1.7mm is such insane value in a compact package. awesome video as usual Richard!
Thanks for watching my friend
When I really want to know about a new lens, I check you or Dustin Abbot. You are quickly becoming one of the best lens reviewers on RUclips.
Oh thank you so much! Happy to hear my name alongside legends like Dustin Abbott
Thanks for your work, its very useful for the photographers to know, great to see how the lens performs in each of the sections
Glad to hear you found the video useful Ramon!
Great review, Richard! Nice work mate.
Thanks Shane!

I just bought f1.4 for around 140usd used! Can't wait to try it😊
Image sharpness is a deal breaker for me 😢 definitely spending more for the 1.4 version.
Thank you for this in-depth review!

@@capturingthedrama hi there, sorry i don't post RAW files anymore these days because of some bad experience. Hope you can understand.
@@TheRealRichardWong of course! Not a problem 😊 appreciate the response my friend!

Most of us don't live in a dessert. Metal feels nicer to the touch plus it doesn't release toxic gases so I'll stick to metal all day.
If climate change continues than we will all be living in a dessert.

It gave off the same Fuji-XC lens series vibes.
How's the sharpness compared to the TTArtisan 56mm/f1.8? I heard that TTArtisan performs better for close up shots.
i did that review separately so haven't done any direct comparison. You may have to check the two reviews and compare the results yourself
villtrox 56 1.7 better than sigma 56 1.4 on CA aspect? or autofocus and sharpness ?
Of cause not!

Hello there, what 85 1.8 are you referring to
I think he refers to the Viltrox
Thank you for this review. Well done.
Thanks for watching ! 👍
Viltrox 56mm 1.4 has horrible CA that's why I sold it on.

Sorry i haven't got a chance to borrow a XC35 f/2 to compare
xc35 is amazing. The IQ is much higher but for BG separation the difference will be huge.
Good stuff!
Thanks!
If I can get the 56mm f1.4 for around $200, should I spent more on the f1.4?
I would get the f/1.4 if price is similar. the 1.4 has better quality and faster maximum aperture
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks. Great review as always :)
This makes me think that the other lenses are just a expensive because of their brand name even if they have a bit better quality.
Yes pricing is a complicated thing. Brand name, Perceived value would influence just as much as the quality and cost.
How is 1.7 on fullframe?
Close to 2.8. Maybe around 2.5.
hope they make a mft version for this
The more people request it the more likely we will see one
@@TheRealRichardWong lets do this guys
If i didn’t have the sigma i would scoop this up
i am happy with Viltrox coz thats the only i can afford
Thanks for that detailed review!

a bargain for the price.!!
it is Definitely a bargain!
