Hopefully Hooker is a good guy. To be willing to do that takes humility and patience. But the thing is, both QBs you mentioned were drafted when the starter was well into his 30s, so they WERE gonna get their chance. Hooker's contract is up before Goff's, it's a much trickier situation here. He only gets a shot if Goff just tanks outta nowhere, or has a major injury. That's a tough thing for a first round talent QB to accept.

Develop Hooker as if you expect him to start somewhere, someday. It helps both him and the teams. Goff even gets banged up for a quarter or a half and a season could hang in the balance. I think Hooker could be a real backup to Goff. And agreed, I’m already saying Hooker is gonna be better than Sudfeld.
Another thing, If Hooker is who we hope he is, he can play a Goff style of game, but he also has physical abilities Goff can’t even come close to. Bring him in for a Goff injury not only can he maintain continuity but add unexpected wrinkles defenses would have to adjust to.

Hooker has to have a very good training camp to be worth it. From there we will see how they use him for the next couple of years. His value could be a solid chance to move up in the draft, and get a solid back up quarterback. I have a feeling that the Lions won't be able to keep all the talent that they have drafted. Which could end up being a new way of getting talent through the draft and trades involving the players that the Lions could lose.

  • @keithgadson
    @keithgadson 18 дней назад

I agree. Hooker was drafted in case Goff didn't perform and Goff did. I only disagree with Goff not being the reason why they lost the NFC title game. It may not be all of Goff's fault but Goff caused that fumble with Gibbs. Everyone who knows football knows it's the QB's job to place that football in the RB's pocket. Goff did not and we are only blaming Gibbs because it's Goff. If that fumble doesn't happen, we win. But also if a lot of other crazy things didnt happen like the catch off of Vildor's facemask, we win. So Goff deserves the contract. I would use Hooker as trade bait at the deadline.

It’s probably a bummer for Hooker who hopes to start. But, his fate is somewhat up to him. If he plays at such a high level in practice in a few years he may be the heir apparent. Like Favre to Rogers or Rogers to Love. Great organizations can have continued QB success. This can't be a serious video. You do realize Aaron Rodgers sat on the bench for 3 years behind Brett favre. If Brett wasn't going through that hole retirement phase and Rogers would have set for a fourth year The only reason he got his time to shine is because Brett went to Minnesota. The Lions didn't draft Hendon Hooker to get Goff up out of here. They drafted him because they know Goff can't play forever. You don't wait till your QB is old and washed up to draft his replacement. You drive him early on and groom him so that way when he steps up to the front line he'll be already ready.

I see what you're saying. I think this is Gibbs-Montgomery all over again. Two Lions.. the old one and the young one. I'm noticing a pattern of this at almost every position.
    *Gibbs and Montgomery, St Brown-Jamo, Carlton Davis/Moseley- Rakestraw & Arnold, Anzalone-Campbell, Decker-Manu, JRM-Vaki, Reader-McNeill/Brodric, even Wright & LaPorta.
I know at those positions, the depth is useful, having guys that can step in. Quarterbacks should be injured less.
But I'm coming to my point. When you have two teams running in parallel, the vets and the rookies, you've got 1) two tight knit groups, that both can feed off each other, and 2) there is competition. If Jared Goff isn't doing well, you now have got a guy in Hendon Hooker on the 2nd team.
Hendon Hooker is going to have to come in and win the starting Quarterback job over Jared Goff. I love Hendon and I think he can eventually do it, it's up to him to try and get there. Unfortunately, most of the QBs that are drafted (outside of the high 1st round guys) have to come in as a backup and try to win a job. It's what it is.
**I don't think we have a QB controversy until we have one. I don't really understand the hate for the Atlanta-Cousins situation to be perfectly honest, I think if you have a chance to upgrade your QB you do it. Well.. Hooker could eventually be an upgrade over Jared Goff. Right now he's a backup. I also like the mobile option available if you need it on 3rd/4th down and in the red-zone.
I think Hendon Hooker is an asset, if you trade him then you better find another Hendon Hooker lol.
You could end up seeing Hendon Hooker practice with a 2nd team of mostly younger players trying to make their name in the NFL. Vaki as the Running back, Antoine Green, Sorsdal/Mahogany/Manu, going up against Rakestraw, Steven Gilmore, Brodric, Wingo, Mathieu Betts. This is your developmental team. I think it can be very useful. Hendon's also had a year of not playing, so you ease him in on the 2nd team, and elevate that unit.

If Hooker actually is good, he’s never being traded midseason, and if he is traded in an offseason it’s for a 1st round pick at a minimum…potentially a 1st and 3rd.

Injuries happen. Wasn’t it like 20 qb injuries last season? I definitely would play Hooker occasionally to get him reps. I find it interesting that we haven’t heard from Hooker in all this. It may well be that there’s less angst going on than the talking heads would lead us to believe.

If we are going at "predictions only"... Holmes could keep Goff two years deal him as the QB market keeps going up and replace him in 2 years with Hooker and get a ton of draft capital for dealing Goff. Not saying this is going to happen but It's probably a scenario Brad has played in his head. IDK

We don't know if Hooker can understand this offence. Russell Wilson in Seattle couldn't but Geno Smith could. Can't wait to see Hooker in pre-season. Caleb Williams is also learning the same system under Bears new OC Shane Waldron. Who can pick it up faster? Hooker or Williams? My money is on Hooker, Caleb has that USC QB bust written all over him.

Another good thing about keeping Hooker that I don't think you mentioned is that it keeps Goff honest, in knowing that a legit talent could fill in for him well (in all likeliness), preventing the dropoff that he took when he signed his last big contract.

What will Ben Johnson look like w/o Jared Goff who installed McVay's system in Detroit? It's why Ben isn't a HC this year. Figure it out. Ben is a joke and Lions Passing Coor. Tanner Engstrand will be a much better OC, can't wait for both BJ and AG to move on.

I always thought he was just an insurance policy and a bargaining chip for Goff's contact negotiations. I think at this point they'll ask Hendon where he'd like to go and get good trade value for him. There are only a few teams who don't have "their guy" at qb and will be willing to get a franchise qb especially on a rookie contract. As for our back up. The UFL guys have been balling out this year and are just itching to make an NFL roster.

  • @douglasmorrisjr.6689

His progression is everything because it's not guaranteed that Goff fulfill the whole contract which would put either or as tradeable assets so to me it's a double sword of sorts because our current OC might not even be here after this season

I agree with folks, he makes me much more comfortable thinking he would be who comes in in an emergency. We also have a fairly creative offense that tends to use everyone on the roster so who knows what is cooking in the playbook. we throw the ball with WRs often enough. Sneak him on special teams quick lol.

No matter who the rookie QB is, it's best for their career, that they sit a year or two. Coming off an injury obviously he has to sit. Look what it did for Jordan Love and look what not sitting did to every other rookie outside of Joe Burrough. Sit to learn and be better.
Hendon Hooker will be best served to trade next year barring a Goff injury. He's probably an LA Ram in 2025/26 season.

  • @johnboehmer6683

No way we trade Hooker until we acquire at least a serviceable backup. Sudfeld is NOT that guy. A Superbowl-calibet team has got to have talent backing up the starting QB. There's way too much invested not to.
If we get a Bridgewater-type backup, yeah. I think we owe it to Hooker, if nothing else, to trade him, to give him the opportunity he deserves. And we could of course get great quality in return.

  • @evanallen7575

I agree that Hooker was an insurance policy and as a potential heir to Jared Goff. The market for him has dried up for the time being, but teams always need QBs so it will open up again after the season is over.
He'll be the backup this year and probably next. After that is anybody's guess. When you get to guys like Nate Sudfeld, his value is in helping Jared Goff prepare for games. He's servicable as a 3rd stringer but is not suited to being backup, so trading away Hendon would be a mistake. While we don't know yet if Hooker can be a backup QB, we already know that Sudfeld can't.

Let's be real. Hendon Hooker hasn't even won the QB2 job yet! He still has to win the #2 job let alone ever make a start. Hooker was drafted as a back-up. Sure, sometimes a back-up gets a chance, shows he is as good or better than a starter, but people having a coronary because they just realized the Lions aren't going to throw away a three time pro-bowler who has experience in a Superbowl and led your team to the NFC Championship for the first time in 30 years for a guy who hasn't even played a pre-season game are ridiculous.
Sure, he could be trade capital but unless the Lions are blowin' people out 4 or 5 games so he can come in and play, no. Hooker is there in case he has something and it's shown if Goff is injured. Unless we see a major injury to Goff or he juust collapses, Hooker is ridin' the pine until he can test free agency and get some looks elsewhere.

  • @brandancyr1319
    @brandancyr1319 18 дней назад

Hes a starter if Goff goes down with an injury! Not many teams have a decent backup QB. Hooker can step up in that role and probably carry us to the Super Bowl.

  • @Alreadygone73

I’m not worried about Goff regressing because he got paid. Our Detroit Lions are a completely different organization and our city is 180 degrees different than the Rams. Hooker knew he was drafted to be the backup to Goff.

I think you're right about the insurance policy. Especially with it coming out that goff wanted a deal last year and lions wanted to wait. While i understand it, i just dont agree with it. Unless goff gets hurt and hooker plays lights out, he will never be more than a backup here.
I think Hooker will get traded away. Not this year, but next year or the year after. I think we will get a true backup qb in FA and then look to trade hooker after. Best case scenario is the lions have a playoff seed clinched, we rest our starters for the last game, and hooker plays lights out, increasing his trade value.

I hope hendon hooker balls out in the preseason so next year we can use him to get some draft capital. I'm thinking a 1st rounder, because next year's QB class isn't the greatest.

Deric I think the lions are taking the Green Bay approach kept Jordon Love. keep Handon for 3 years study the book really well learn all the swag and let Goff walk on the 4th year, by that time Handon would be fully matured and ready to take over for the next 5 years

Just because Jared Goff got paid doesn't mean that hen and hooker is going to flame out. Is it more likely? Absolutely, but injuries still happen. It's still a physical sport. If JG goes down and hendon hooker steps up and above what we expected, it's his job and we're just going to have to move on from jg that's the way the business goes
