I kinda like the red black keys. I get it's... odd looking, but I actually do like it. Mind you, I also quite liked the Koppa coloured Krome from a few years ago, so my history of liking ugly Korgs is already criminal.
This is awesome ! I love the black and red keys on the minilogue keyboard and the graphics. It’s amazing. Can’t wait to see what you do with all this stuff.
Spluuuuuuuuurge!!! Love the Bass Station II. Have been thinking about getting one myself. The Wavestate looks pretty fun too. Look forward to seeing what you think of that. Lots of toys to keep the channel busy! :)
Awesome! Can't wait to see what all of these do. Been getting into 80's EBM lately and I've started learning about the things the Roland TB-303 can do so these all look like something I'm going to like. The red and black is quite odd hahah but I do think it goes nicely with the panel design and the red wooden back there
The minilogue XD was my first toe in the water with analog synthesizers. I kept it for nearly a year and then upgraded to the prologue 8 because I was really wanting full size keys, and the extra polyphony didn't hurt. Then, I went from the prologue 8 to the 16. I really made that move primarily for the 61 keys (instead of 49 on the prologue 8). The prologue has been discontinued by KORG sadly, but I love mine and will keep it forever. Looking forward to the upcoming reviews and demos from you on all this gear!!
😂 That's how it always starts with analog synths lol. I still have my original Minilogue and it really kicked off my channel many years ago so I have fond memories of it.
I will always be a keyboard controller/DAW/plugin guy; it's what I started with ergo, is the workflow I understand and am comfortable with. The hassles and expenses of the hardware world just don't do it for me, even my modular synth is software (Voltage Modular). I don't gig or play live; I don't really even actually play so much as plink and plunk on the keyboard searching for the right notes and chords. I got into this later in life (40s); had I been born 30 years later with computers, DAWs, and plugins, I would have hunkered down and learned how to play but, I'm 60yo now, have a day job as a animator, motion graphics artist, and video editor which leaves me with little time to learn how to play the keyboard so, I plink and plunk, use MIDI and audio loops, and have a great time doing it.
Have fun with the Bassstation, get the latest system update for it, you get a lot of fun functions with it like individual sounds for each key. (these things are deeper than you think) I love mine.
Just bought a Bass Station II myself about 2 weeks ago. It's very impressive for the price. Since it's digitally controlled analog, Novation has added many features over the years: It's now a 3-osc synth, 2-note paraphonic, plus a cool little analog percussion synth/drum machine when using AFX Mode.
Woody, I love your channel and the way you present and demonstrate. You really have a way to communicate as we are with you at the kitchen or dinner table. Very nice new stuff you showed here. Some of them are in my own dawless setup. Following what you will create with them! Cheers from the Netherlands!
Love the Minilogue bass. Waiting to see how you set everything up with the midi routing. I have a Flagship Kronos plus the Wavestate MkII and the Korg VST Collection so I can play around with all the earlier analog sounds. I am truly interested in how you sync up the TR-8S with your keyboards.
Heya Woody. Gotta give a shout out to Loopop. He absolutely blew me away with his jam on the v2.0 update of the TR8S. Me made excellent use of the FM drums and the tuning knobs to great effect creating a standalone tune, without a separate synth. You really should listen to it. As for digging up old equipment, I recently got back to using my Yamaha QY70, sitting on the train and using it as a scratchpad for new ideas. Yup its a very 90's device (my guess is that it's using a 2MB 'soundfont' style library because it sounds similar to a XG soundcard I had installed in my computer years ago,) but it also has a very useful sequencer set up which I've been using with the Nautilus. Its been great fun to use! I wish Yamaha would do something similar today. 17:18 ...Yeah, like a Korg Kronos?
Great choice of synths there, Woody! I too have the Wavestate, D05 and JD08 and wouldn't part with any of them - I love the fact that I've got those great vintage sounds without the bulk of the old keyboards. Personally, I don't mind the red and black keys - I actually swapped my original Roland Juno DS61 for the all black key model as it's more of a gimmick on a live gig (even if it's harder to see!). Looking forward to the upcoming videos featuring this gear.
@@WoodyPianoShack Lol I've got quite a few! Gradually selling off some of the older, bulkier, less reliable ones and replacing with boutiques and VSTs. A bit sad but needs to be done 😞
When I saw the pixelated red and black I thought you'd gone for the Roland JDXA. I'd forgotten about the Kylie Minogue Bass. The red keys will grow on you. A little vampire.
The Wavestate and the TR-8s are some nice pieces. I bought a TR-6s a few months ago for my birthday. It’s pretty much a best of collection of classic Roland drum machines in a convenient compact package. One of the things I really like about it, is the software editor. It’s pretty snazzy. In september a firmware update was released for the 6s and 8s that adds an ACB model of the CR-78. I do hope that they release an update at some point to make the USB class compliant so that I can hook it up to my iPad without having to route in through an audio interface. For some odd reason the MC-101 has a class compliant mode but the 6s has not. The MC-101 is on my radar for a while now just as a midi sound module (I think it can be a good 4 part multitimbral high-polyphony sound source in a Korg Gadget based iPad oriented mixed hardware setup).
thanks for the info! yes the recent cr78 was what tipped me over onto buying one. love that machine, used to gig with one. agree 101 would be a great compliment for melodic parts, the weakness of tr. I might try and pick one up.
Recently bought a Korg Wavestate mk1, then AKAI MPC Keys 61. I would gladly have all the gear that you mention, but space is a serious limitation, so instead of having several separate hardware synths i now have a workstation which includes the most important (to me) synth plugins, can sample and play every other synth I can ever need and drive analog synths if need be. The only exception was Korg Wavestate, which for me represents an unique approach and deserves the honour of being my secondary unit.
Congrats on your synth haul! I'd return the minilogue bass and get the minilogue XD. The XD is better in every way. But honestly, the difference between the XD and prologue (used) is small. If you could swing that, you'd have much more of a keeper.
Love the excuse (ahem reason) to splurge out after years of wait on a ton of music instruments - to invest in the channel.😁 Really curious to know what will be coming up for these pieces of kit. Interesting choice of instruments though, possibly a move towards more dance oriented tracks? Hope we still get some piano videos. Interesting you went for hardware (mostly modern digital recreations of analog kit) as opposed to plugins and softsynths, although I know you've already got a lot of the latter. Clearly your bucket list! 😊❤
haha, yes, it sounds like a lame excuse but true. if i was just piddling around on my own I would prob use software, but that doesn't get the views. who knows, maybe this experiment will convert me to a hardware dawless jam man. also curious what real analog vs digital or VA brings to the party.
minilogue: I like the key colour combination. At least it’s not the black on black one. Who thought that was a good idea? (or is that some other product I’m think off?). If you’re planning on moving it on in a few months anyway, don’t worry about the red keys. You’ll get the benefit of of increased value, and it will be out of your sight soon enough.
Woody, tell Roland to release a new batch of inproved Boutiques in the bodies of the corresponding programmer modules with backwards compatibility with legacy synths. Imagine a D-05v2 in the body of PG-1000 controller, but still able to program the D-50 and with full SysEx compatibility...
Interesting shift of focus - desktop devices have a whole eco-system of add-ons (stands, mixers, psus, cabling etc) to consider. I look forward to seeing how you synthesize (pun intended) your setup! When I bought my Minilogue XDm I had decided to avoid the small keyboard version because of space limitations. Korg have recently released a Wavestate module, proving the point!
Dear God Woody WHY, now my G.A.S. levels elevated! On serous note - thank you, what a great video, i was looking for something like that. Also the red sharps is a pain and actually hurt the eyes in a long run. OG white was so much prettier. Also also XD to me is too digital compared to OG Minilogue. Not my cup of tea but you might like it very much.
interesting, thanks! yes, the OG ML may prove to be preferable over the ML XD, will be fun to see how things pan out when I eventually get both, only one will be a keeper i guess
It sounds like he wants to sync the Wavestate "sequencer" with a drum machine sequencer, but that's not going to work. The Wavestate doesn't have a step sequencer like you would find on a Digitakt or TR-8 or most grooveboxes. It's "sequencer" just modulates and changes the timbre of a sound in many different ways as you play and hold notes. They should call it something like a "modulator" to avoid confusion. I bought one of the first ones, then quickly sold it when I discovered I couldn't put sequences of notes on it. For people great at playing keyboards who want interesting modulation, it could still be great for them, but I think calling what it has a "sequencer" is very confusing.
Nice gear, Woody! I was also looking for a D-05, but the price has increased significantly in the second-hand market here in Japan ;/ Luckily, I still have my D-550.
The MInilogueBass is identical to the Minilogue except the factory presets. The XD version is not really advanced, it has a 3rd oscillator that is digital and a much-extended effect engine....but...you are losing the ADSR filter envelope and the link from the LFO to that envelope. I ended up buying both the original and the XD...why?...because these synths are just for making samples on my high quality sampler and it was important to be analog and 4 notes of poly so it can be used as a solo with legato and overlapping long sustain patches. I can build gigantic patches from overlaying samples and creating a stereo field, and then playing the samples from a keyboard.
There is one downside to the Minilogue XD: It’s second EG is only AD instead of ADSR. For most people that probably isn’t a big deal, but I was happy to get the original at a good price instead of the XD as the upgrades of the XD weren’t important to me.
The idea that the BS2 is a simple monosynth is not true. It’s got so many features. The AFX mode which allows every key to be a different sound is an example. It’s super deep these days.
the miniloguebass is actually more readable than the minilogue, since it at least has colored markers on the knobs! anyway, i'm never shy to bring out the masking tape and marker pen :)
over here, $500 for ML, 600 MLB and 700 XD. do they won't trade me up. but no worries, there are so many used XDs popping up for sale, just a matter of time.
incredibly interesting episode. Very good choice of equipment purchased. I'm looking forward to the next episodes, I'm especially interested in the Bass Station 2 and the JD-08 in action with the other synths. I'm also waiting for the first music equipment manufacturer to honor your contributions Woody and send some new synth completely free. Will it be Korg, Roland or maybe Kurzweil or Behringer 🙂?
So, my steadily growing synth collection is more and more focussing on pure synthesis, rather than sample & synthesis. But of course, apart from the ones I already have, eventually I'd like to have the ultimate (literally!) S&S module. And when it comes to legendary S&S modules, you're talking about Roland. And their ultimate, in more ways than one, S&S module is the Integra-7. It's on my wish list, but I'm looking for a better deal than the sellers on eBay and Reverb are offering. Same thing for drum machines. The ultimate drum machine is the TR-8S, and that I did, in fact, purchase. Second-hand, mint condition, came with the box, etc. For the mono-synth, I got the Super Bass Station (rack-mount). That one actually came from the UK, so I had to pay the Brexit tax (VAT and fees), but still cheaper than buying from within the EU. The Roland D-550 is still on my wish list. You may have noticed a trend here: apart from the TR-8S, I prefer 19" rack modules over knobby boxes. I really don't have the space to keep all of them. And look at you, you need two videos because all those boxes don't fit on your table in one go.
The problem with Wavestate MK1 polyphony will be evident if you set a program to hold (so it repeats a rhythm section) and when you fill up all voices (not very difficult with wave sequencing) voice stealing may happen on exactly this program and just stop the rhythm altogether. I found this very annoying. I sold mine but kept the plugin version. The other problem of course is the very cheap keybed. Other than that it's a very unique synth. I also have a TR-8S (beside me right now!) and I enjoy it a lot, definitely a keeper. I have considered getting a JD-08, not certain if it will happen or not. You may consider getting also a GAIA2. It's fantastic, and the price in Europe has dropped. I combine mine with the 8S and they make an amazing duo. Awesome keybed too. I am looking for something very compact maybe 3 octave mini keys with internal sounds. Battery and/or usb operation and built-in speakers for a quick jam would be a plus. I am considering either some Roland boutique or something like reface dx.
Great stuff! I got a "Bass Station 2" (BS2 for short), too. And the TR-8s would be the next thing, I'd get. So that's all really close to my kind of setup.🙂 JD-08: Nice, has those Roland strings. D-05: From the reviews I thought, it was good, very close to the original, but I'm still not sure of the D50 itself. So I probably would have gone for the JU-06A or the SH-01A instead, but that's just me. I know, you like digital. (Regarding the Minilogue, Adam Borseti (on RUclips) has taken it to its limits, soundwise.) With that much gear, there's quite a lot to learn and check out now, I guess. For example, syncing the BS2's sequencer (which is more meant as an arpeggiator) to other gear used to be a problem (not sure, if it's solved). I'd just use the TR-8s as a sequencer, and send Midi to the BS2 from there. I'm also curious about your final setup regarding effects, mixer and cabling (although probably not too many other people would be interested in that, I guess). I used to think about the Zoom R16, it can mix and record a number of instruments and also add effects. But maybe you could also send the BS2's sound into one of the other synths to add effects (their onboard effects, that is). The red and black keyboard of the Minilogue reminds me of the Korg Poly 800 of my youth. There was a version with white and black keyboard (instead of black and white), of which I still have fond memories. Red keys are a bit too much for me too though.
thanks for all the info, much appreciated. i will cover audio and midi in pt2. interesting what you say about using tr as sequencer, it is not strong for melodic parts. that is why i went for synths with their own sequencers, but only time will tell how that works out for me! yes, i have my work cut out for months learning all this new gear. that kinda sucks because I don't particularly enjoy getting stuck into manuals, shift functions and menu diving etc. takes too much time away from playing!
Wavestate Mk1, TR8s and D-05. Snap! Alas, all currently playing “Living in a Box”. Just too much trouble to set up though, but not really worth selling. Yet, Kronos 2, Moog Subsequent 37 and Jupiter 80 used everyday. 🙂 👍
I have some of these synths : Bass Station 2 (I even have the mk1) JD 08 D 05 I have the Minilogue XD which is a bit different. Maybe you could try some boutique synths : MicroMonsta (digital VA) Töörö (hybrid wavetable synth) Hansy 1010 (hybrid mono synth based on Shruthi SMR4, with lots of waveforms and parameters) Ambika, or the Xena clone (hybrid poly synth based on Shruthi, 6 voices with their own output)
Nice, mostly Roland and Korg. Back in the '80s, when someone had Roland or Korg gear, it was 100% guaranteed that it was going to be a high-end professional instrument. With Casio or Yamaha, there was a high probability it was going to be a toy keyboard. Today, with the Volcas and AIRA Compact series... Oh well, let's look at the positive sides. There's still a 100% guarantee with an American made Fender or a Gibson, that the instrument is going to be top notch.
The Novation Bass Station is on my list of an affordable setup as well. If I had only had about $1500 I'd buy 1. Reface DX ($249 USD right now), 2. Bass Station 2 $400, 3. Waldorf Blofeld $650 for the keys on Reverb (new), 4. Volca bass if I had even less money (instead of the Bass Station). I think maybe also add the Hydrasynth explorer (cheapest version) and you're under 2 grand for a world of sound and nice blend of analogue/digital. Can cover all ground.
great rig choice there! yeah, BS is quite pricey, at least compared to say a full workstation synth which is around 1500. in fact many of these compact synths seem relatively pricey compared to workstations and full synths.
@@WoodyPianoShack Actually yeah true Woody. I didn't even think of that. Could pick up a Kurzweil PC4-7 or something like that for $1250 and that's a lot of synth. Good chameleon. Good impersonator. Sounds great. Mix of FM (fully DX7 compatible so you can load those patches too, samples and VA. And modular. Didn't even think of workstations. Very good point.
The red and black minilogue is a thing of beauty, keep it

Woody, I think that red and black synth will go great with a “goth” look, which I think would be very flattering to you.

I think the black and red keys look marvellous. Could be a collector’s item in the future and … it will never suffer from yellowing keys.

+1 for the red and black keys.
Yay! I have Wavestate desktop module on pre-order.🤩
nice one! hope it comes swiftly did not know you had to wait.
Nice, you’ve got some serious manual reading coming up 😅 just bought myself a used Roland mc-707 just to start on a dawless journey.
yeah, that prospect is somewhat terrifying i won't lie. congrats on that 707
Nice gear, Woody! I was also looking for a D-05, but the price has increased significantly in the second-hand market here in Japan ;/ Luckily, I still have my D-550.
i think the 05 has gone up everywhere, supply & demand economics. nice to have the d550 magic instead!
Love the red keys.. please keep it
Interesting to hear your thoughts on how you get on with all these small units. I've been cutting back lately, all the cords, cables and clutter..
yes you describe well the drawback of this approach. although some peops probably enjoy that part of it too.
@@WoodyPianoShack I am interested in that Roland S1 the more I look into it..
Please keep this stylish, cool looking black & red keybed KORG Minilog. I would love to have that kind keyboard.
Looking forward to many WaveState videos!
I can build gigantic patches from overlaying samples and creating a stereo field, and then playing the samples from a keyboard.
thanks for clarifying the MLB and the MLXD, much appreciated. yes, unknown if I will prefer the XD. sometimes less is more.
Cool Stuff
There is one downside to the Minilogue XD: It’s second EG is only AD instead of ADSR. For most people that probably isn’t a big deal, but I was happy to get the original at a good price instead of the XD as the upgrades of the XD weren’t important to me.
Nice plastic is fantastic if it's made correctly. Great video 😊
yes, i have prejudices from tpp much badly made plastic gear. thx!
The idea that the BS2 is a simple monosynth is not true. It’s got so many features. The AFX mode which allows every key to be a different sound is an example. It’s super deep these days.
yeah, fair enough, thanks for pointing that out. but i guess it can also be simple if you want it to be, for simpletons like me :)
Kudos for putting your money where your mouth is in regard to brand deals vs buying the gear.
thanks, glad you appreciated that.
Congrats on getting your old sounds back in pocket form! And the best drum machine! Dont forget to update all firmwares new Cr78 drum kit is great!
will do that for sure, thanks!
Monologue looks awful - ok for a vampire movie maybe - looking forward to hearing your opinions on all these synths
vampire is a good very good way to put it!
Woody: complaints about JD-Xi red-black interface which is 99% unreadable.
Also Woody: gets a black Minilogue which is 200% unreadable.
the miniloguebass is actually more readable than the minilogue, since it at least has colored markers on the knobs! anyway, i'm never shy to bring out the masking tape and marker pen :)
@@WoodyPianoShacklol :)
You can make jamms with differents convinations of synths. It will be nice hear them together. Thanks!!
exactly my plan!
Keep The Minilouge !! ❤❤👍👍
Can't look at that red and black keyboard. It's got cheesy star wars villains written all over it.
Whats the price for the Minilouge XD? Since they sent you a more expensive one, I wonder if they would do an even swap for the XD.
over here, $500 for ML, 600 MLB and 700 XD. do they won't trade me up. but no worries, there are so many used XDs popping up for sale, just a matter of time.
incredibly interesting episode. Very good choice of equipment purchased. I'm looking forward to the next episodes, I'm especially interested in the Bass Station 2 and the JD-08 in action with the other synths. I'm also waiting for the first music equipment manufacturer to honor your contributions Woody and send some new synth completely free. Will it be Korg, Roland or maybe Kurzweil or Behringer 🙂?
thank you! pt2 is already out btw! i'm quite enjoying the hunt for used synths and good deals - just like everyone else :)
And look at you, you need two videos because all those boxes don't fit on your table in one go.
haha so true! well the actual reason was i was waiting for stuff to arrive :) but all this clobber is too much for my desk at the same time for sure.
I am considering either some Roland boutique or something like reface dx.
nice insights, and thanks for the recommendations. will def consider.
I regret to have sold the Bass Station 2.. Minilogue with red keys? Looks raw and wild, with artistic attitudes.. 😊
hello Woody ! Can't wait to see and hear what you are going to do with these news toys :) No doubt you will have a lot of fun !
i will indeed. i feel the pressure is on me now though, i don't want to be that "all the gear, no idea" guy!
@@WoodyPianoShack no sorry mate ! I know what you’re capable of ! Just enjoy and the magic will happen ! Take care.
The JD 08 has a strange screen of hieroglyphics have to constantly look at the manual to see what these symbols mean
haha, yeah, know what you mean
Woody rocking the Pierce Brosnan hair! Looking good!
hahaha, not convinced about that, but hey, i'll take it.
(Regarding the Minilogue, Adam Borseti (on RUclips) has taken it to its limits, soundwise.)
With that much gear, there's quite a lot to learn and check out now, I guess.
Cool video.
Wavestate Mk1, TR8s and D-05. Snap! Alas, all currently playing “Living in a Box”. Just too much trouble to set up though, but not really worth selling. Yet, Kronos 2, Moog Subsequent 37 and Jupiter 80 used everyday. 🙂 👍
congrats on your trio! yes, it seems a lot of hassle compared to a workstation with everything built in.
That black and red Korg would give Gary Numan the butterflies I think lol.
i think so too, good observation!
I have some of these synths :
Bass Station 2 (I even have the mk1)
JD 08
D 05
I have the Minilogue XD which is a bit different.
Maybe you could try some boutique synths :
MicroMonsta (digital VA)
Töörö (hybrid wavetable synth)
Hansy 1010 (hybrid mono synth based on Shruthi SMR4, with lots of waveforms and parameters)
Ambika, or the Xena clone (hybrid poly synth based on Shruthi, 6 voices with their own output)
there are some unusual choices there, i'm not into that scene so thanks for the suggestions. congrats on your matching synths :)
I agree with Woody, I don't think I could handle the red/black keys either 🤔🎹
