  • FIRST COLD FRONT
Cooler weather will be brought to Kern County thanks to our first cold front of the season. It is still on track, scheduled to come through Friday. Today, our high was 95. Tomorrow, low 90s are on the menu with sunny skies. But then the fairly deep low pressure system we've been talking about finally arrives from the northwest. Temperatures will tumble to the mid 80s for highs on Friday and Saturday. Very comfortable (if not a bit chilly) lows in the 50s are forecast by Saturday morning. It will feel like early October. Mountain towns will see much cooler weather with lows in the 30s for many areas Saturday and Sunday morning. Highs will only rise to the upper 60s. There will be some wind on Friday in the mountains and desert. Gusts to 50 MPH in the usual spots is expected.
    NO MORE 110s
After looking at the medium range models, we've concluded that it is unlikely Bakersfield will see 110 or higher for the remainder of the summer. Our last 110+ reading was 111 on August 7th. The latest 110 or higher temperature in Bakersfield was 115 that occurred on September 7th, 2022- only 2 years ago. Remember that??
    WARMER NEXT WEEK
The heat will return rather abruptly next week with the potential for Heat Wave #5. Highs will ratchet up to about 100 by Tuesday as a flat ridge of high pressure overspreads our region. However, we may or may not see 3 consecutive days of triple digits (the requirement for a heat wave). Models have toned down the intensity of next week's heat. If we do have a heat event, it will most likely be a minimal heat wave- Category Zero.
    LABOR DAY HOLIDAY
Going into the following weekend and Labor Day, our weather appears to slowly moderate with highs in the mid to upper 90s (slightly above normal), with the advent of another low pressure trough moving onshore close to Labor Day Monday. Then, cooler than normal weather will develop. As for the rest of September, our first rain appears in the long range models just after the middle of September. To be sure, the worst of this summer of 2024 looks to be over.
