Before gluing the tube onto the base, use a file to cut a couple windows into the tube about 1/4" from each end (file about half way into the tube). You can then insert your wheels and axles from each end and secure them with a drop of CA glue into each of the windows.
That Celica is a great little casting. Too bad theyre tricky to find now.. I quite like those monoblock wheels, I might have to look into them. Currently I use Greenlight wheels.
I like this method because it allows the wheel to spin on the axle. Some methods glue one wheel to the axle, then the axle rotates, and that seems unreliable. Still, I haven't done a wheel swap yet. I just stripped the paint from two bodies, then I'll repaint and do wheels and tires. :)
Great tutorial. For sure this is the most time consuming one yet most likely the best. Looks like Mattel tries to make it difficult for people to modify their Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars on purpose.
Personally, I don't really like the idea of heating the casting to remove a plastic base. I'm pretty sure it damage them. Tho, may I ask you why was there such a gap in between the base and the body in the finished product? Was it because the wheels were too big?
How does one cleanly take wheels from a premium hotwheel with a metal base? Sometimes the prongs on the axles are to close for a screwdriver to pry apart
Would it be ok to message you personally for some help or advise? Im currently working on a custom car/trailer combo, and could use your criticism.. Theres a custom competition coming up and october and this is like my first major custom just by watching yours and other tutorials alone. And this is perfect I was going to wheel swap aftermarket wheels on my trailer.
I have had the hardest of times locating the brass tube. Maybe I'm a dummy, but could you possibly point me in the right direction? I'd hate to purchase the wrong item.
Hahahahahahaha holy hayseed that’s the cutest little tube cutter ever! Agreed on the method/result... it looks great and is solid. 👍 Thanks for the vid as always! Happy day!
Awesome! Thanks! Tried my first wheel swap today using M2 wheels. Nightmare! The wheels are now fixed in place. Hahaha. Maybe I'll have better luck with the monoblock wheels I ordered.
Update to my comment from a year ago: I now drill out the rivets for disassembly, then use strong glue for reassemly. Much less burning /melted plastic and my fingers and the car don't get hot.
I wish Mattel would just come up with a way to separate the base from the shell with just a flat head screw driver. I'm sure there's a market for customizers who do wheel swaps. That soldering iron method is a great idea by the way.
@@WheelsNThangs I've never tried to use a toothpick, always put the super glue on the end of the axle. Will use the toothpick method next time. Thanks!
Jose Osornio poke a square of paper through the axle and up to the tire. Super glue it and then pull the paper off when it drys. If there was to much glue it will stick to the paper and you can work that of with your finger. Your wheel will be free.🤷🏽♂️
I use a soldering gun with soldering wire and I put on the end of the axle soldering wire and make a small point and I ahve somthing like a ribbit and I use the whole axle don't need to cut in half

Sound like a great idea but it will make it hard to wheel swap it again in my opinion
@@joshuehernandez9514 Maybe hot melt glue. It yields to isopropyl alcohol very easily.
@@MarkWarbington A little heat will do the job
The end result is worth the additional time and work.
totally
Great tutorial. I'll,have to experiment with this when I get started. thanks 👍
Thank you!
Great tutorial. Perfect for the beginner or seasoned pro wheel swapper.
Thank you!
They swapped in wheels look fantastic mate
Thank you!

Hmm.. Didn't know the casting was hard to get. Now I'll have to find some more.
HW doest make Toyotas anymore, but there's a lot of Toyota fans, so prices for the ever shrinking group of Celicas are on the rise.
@@boerharms2209 Wow, I never knew!
Awesome wheel swap method a lot better then just the crimped axle method thanks for sharing 😁👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you!
I use the same method. Sometimes I'll crimp the tube instead of super glue. But mainly glue.
content like this is the reason i subscribed while back, this video was awesome.
Thank you Gabriel!
Awesone DIY video. Very helpful.

You did good WNT, those wheels look great, take care as always from South Africa
Thank you Val!
Which wire cutters do you use to cut the wires on the wheels that are very hard? I have tried different ones but they get damaged after the first use.
Glad youve gone back to "Wheels n Thangs", makes it easier to identify you in my bigass sub feed, lol
:)
This is really a great looking result.

Cool! I just picked up some of them nail looking nails lol and I know they will work 💯
great channel name! ;) I haven't really looked as yet, but is there a wheel set made for rolling speed? Nice plastic chassis removal!
Thanks! Not that I know of.

No, the wheels were fine and smaller than the original. I did not glue the base as mentioned in the video..
Can you give me the info or link to buy this small tubing cutter ! I ordered 3 of them so far and all of them are to big lol.
Where can I find a good assortment of tires (preferably rubber) to buy for my swaps? I can't find a great place online so far. Thanks!
Year later, every find anything?
If you had to drill out the base, what size drill bit do you need?
I want to try doing this but does anyone know of good wheel companys?
Can I ask a question?
So can we screw out the base with a screw driver
Where can i get these wheels?
Can you tell me where you purchased the turning stand?
Great video Thanks
I'll rather spend the time (keeps me busy) to have the best result, I'll be using this method.
Hi Lille the video. I will like to know what kind of glue you use?
Another great and informative video, keep them coming!!!

What tube cutter are you using

Great video, what wheels are they?
Should I but the hot wheel axles or the head pins ??
Hi,
What size diameter are the headpins? Do you use 0.8mm (1/32)?
I see 25mm in the video but I’m certain that’s the length.
also wondering this.
Cant the wheels just be easily pulled out? Do you put glue in the little hole of the axel?
What size pipe cutter was that?
So how do replace Axl Rose?
Bring back Brian Johnson 😉
My wheel kits come with a full length axle like those 1/32 scale toy car how do i install them
What a difference those wheels make to that casting, awesome👍
Thank you Gary!
Nice tutorial, the wheels look great!
Thank you!
Where can I get those wheels I have looked on Amazon I didn't find them there all I found was greenlight wheels.
Looks awesome, thanks for the new method!!
Thanks for watching!
I wheel swap premiums so o still have rod, I thinks this is way easier, but the wheels you have are better than. Premiums
I like this method, it keeps me busy and the results are better.
Thank you!
@@WheelsNThangs you welcome sir.
If you don't have the tubing, you can use cotton bud sticks and cut the plastic tube stick to fit.
Great tip!
REZA ISMAIL I think most of cotton bud not fit much and a bit loose.. i did buy the brass tube and it way too big.. need this 1/16 brass tube asap😢
Cool swap and great job! I want to do a wheel swap on a '69 Dodge Charger 500"...
I sent you that super cool wheel swapped superbird with the nascar wheels on Facebook a while ago
:)
Anyone have a size or product number for the brass tubing? Watched a ton of these videos but no one gives an exact size.
Pretty slick.
Thanks!
Yay I don’t need a dremel to take it apart!
Do you have a link to the wheels? I have also found the tubing at stores like Ace hardware.

Any tips on how to not get glue on the wheel? That happens to me often using this method and prevents the car from rolling well.
Other than be careful with a toothpick I don't have any other tips.
