Two weeks ago I turned 30 and I wanted to try my first peaty whisky, and I decided to try Lavagulin 8 (which was F delicious) and Bowmore 12. Today I received my Talisker 10, which I was actually considering instead of the Bowmore 12, but heard it was a more middle-advanced whisky. Hopefully is more flavory than Bowmore, as it was good, but the Lavagulin profile was a "love at first taste". Greetings from Mexico, and congratulations for such a nice channel!
Thank you, Carlos! It's great to hear the whiskies you can get in Mexico. I do enjoy the Lagavulin 8 and it hit me right on the first taste as well. Cheers!
The Talisker 10yo is the whisky that started my love affair with single malts over 30 years ago when I working in Scotland and the hotel barman recommended it to me. I was immediately struck by the pepperiness of it. I have been lucky enough to visit the beautiful area where the distillery is twice, and should anyone be visiting the North West of Scotland I highly recommend finding it. I have tried many, many different single malts since, some truly wonderful drams, (the macallan 18yo 1985 springs to mind) but I'll never, ever forget that first dram of tallisker.
That hotel bartender did so well! I love whisky recommendations and that's one reason I started this channel. There's no way I could know enough about all the whiskies to buy what I like without everyone sharing their experiences. Thanks for sharing and cheers!
This was my first peated whisky experience about 10 years ago, and I've since expanded my appreciation and knowledge of single malts, like Lagavulin 16 and Ardbeg 10. Whilst the Talisker is a less complex malt, with a shorter finish, it is still really enjoyable and good value for money when on special. I bought a bottle recently for $92AUD, marked down from $135AUD. I hope that the prices of these lovely malts remain accessible to the average punter. I'm enjoying your reviews, you deliver them with such a positive relaxed vibe, and some good tunes too. Keep it up. Dan from Down Under.
Thank you so much, Dan from Down Under! You're kind words are appreciated. Talisker 10 is an easy dram to enjoy. It's part of the Diageo family, like Lagavulin, which makes me a bit less excited about it now than I was when I first bought it. But it's all about the taste, right? We drink what we like and maybe have to decide on one bottle over another because of price. This is the golden age of whisky, which means we have a lot of variety and also rising costs. Cheers!
I'm certainly in the Talisker fan club now. If you have enjoyed any other expressions from them, I'd love to hear about your experiences Rosie. Cheers!
I just bought my second Talisker last week. The first one was the Wilder Seas, and now the 10. But again Talisker delivers a great whisky for this budget. Everybody should have a Talisker 10 in their cabinet!!! Nice review, Slaìnte!
Talisker 10 for me is one that is always kept in stock. I love their unusual ABV. This is a great middle of the road pleated whisky. One that would be worth a review is Ledaig 10, for me it’s right up there with Ardbeg 10.
Good point about the ABV. When I see percentages that aren't the normal 40, 43, 46 for ABV, it makes me think that the distiller went for flavor over convention or marketing. I've tasted the Ledaig 10 in an whisky calendar, but never have owned a bottle. I'll add it to my list. Cheers!
Would be interesting for me to see how the Ledaig 10 holds up for you. For me personally Talisker 10 is a much more interesting whiskey than the Ardbeg 10
Fabulous review Kevin!! Based on your awesome review I bought a bottle of this terrific scotch and I am so happy that I did! It's lovely and I am just starting to explore it now that I have had my first couple of drams. I don't know why this one wasn't on my radar sooner! These beautiful single malts are damn expensive with taxes in Canada (I'm in Vancouver and we have an alcohol sales tax in addition to provincial and federal taxes) but in truth they are worth it! They are to me anyway. Having said that a bottle of Coreyvbreckan is $178.00 before taxes and that is getting really pricey. Lag 16 is close to that. This Talisker 10 is $125.00 before taxes although if I buy it via mail one province over in Alberta, I can get it for $99.00 and they don't have an alcohol tax! The delivery charge is still fairly reasonable. I don't have a ton of extravagances so I feel it was fine paying these prices and I am eager to explore Talisker 10 a lot more. The nosing is really nice and I am loving the flavours I am getting on my palette! Thanks for doing these terrific reviews! It's much appreciated! Cheers! 🙂
Thank you for your kind words and for sharing those Canadian prices! You're very generous! Whisky prices have risen all over the globe, but that's what happens when a product becomes popular. As for Talisker 10, I was shocked that I had it in my collection and had drank so much of it. My excuse of owning between 100 and 200 bottles of whisky at that time is pretty lame, but it's all I've got. ;) I do think Talisker is worth the money because of the care that distiller takes in the creation of their Scotch. Cheers!
I can understand why the taste changed after the water was added. That's why I like my scotch's neat. Talisker 10 sounds very interesting. Will have to try it soon! 🥃
I rarely add water and I never add ice to Scotch. If I'm sipping an Old Fashioned, which usually has bourbon or rye in it, ice works well. I could count on one hand the number of Scotch whiskies that I preferred with water. But like all flavors, that's very personal. Let me know what you think of the Talisker 10 after you try it. Cheers!
Talisker 10 was my first peated whisky and I really enjoy it. I have a destillers version now, but I think I prever the 10, tough this one is also very good.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm trying to avoid buying every Talisker expression right now… I have plenty of unopened bottles of Scotch to review. ;) Cheers!
Nice.....unbiased reviewed of a quintessential scotch. It's funny, I have a half bottle way in the back of the cabinet also and I pulled it out tonight. It's kindamazing how the peat turns into pepper on the palate and disappears in the finish. The nose is pretty mellow for such a tasty dram. I never put more than 3 drops of water in anything but I think it can take it
Just started my whiskey journey. Right now i am just tasting different whiskeys and try to figure it out what people are sayin about the notes 😄 im finding 1 or 2 but it is fun to learn. I tried today the talisker 10 and i like it, its the first peated whisky ive tasted. For me its salty, chili burn, smoke. Going to buy the port charlot heavy peated for christmas.
Welcome to the wonderful world of whisky! The tasting notes can be hard, but focus more on the nose and flavors that you enjoy. You can train yourself to give notes in the future. I highly recommend the Port Charlotte Heavily Peated 10. Enjoy and cheers!

Hi Bill! It's always nice share content with guitarists. I drink whisky better than I play guitar, so apologies for any mistakes you might notice. As far as being an expert about whisky, I can't claim that title either. I know enough to be dangerous, do as much research as possible, and work hard at recording and editing a clear presentation of my content. Thanks for the kind words and for commenting. It's a shame you couldn't visit the distillery, but I'm told that Skye is still an amazing place to visit. Cheers!
A great review - Having drank Talisker 10 for 35 years, it was always a surprise based on young age - this has changed for peated whiskies in recent years. For £30ish on sale it has quality and consistency that I find outmatches the other Talisker (more expensive) variants - always have some close by. Great distillery and lovely location. Also Naked Grouse, a great rocks and mixer....
I love this distillery. It's called one of the classic malts for a reason. I also have the 18 year old and the 25. My favourite is the 18. It keeps a lot of the nose of the ten, but it loses the sharpest edges and wins complexity in the palate.
This scotch is one of the few that WOWED ME when I first tried it. Really love it! Especially love the brinny, sea spray taste. If you are a shell fish fan, you will like this!
The perfect description for Talisker 10 is "effortlessly sophisticated". It's easy enough to enjoy casually, but has enough depth and substance for exploration. And it's affordable!
@@WhiskyRiffs so far, I've only tried the 10 and two of the NAS releases, the Storm and the Skye. Both were inferior to the 10, in my opinion, although similarly priced. They're apparently using very young juice as a base in these bottles, so while there's still a lot of Talisker-DNA in there, the aromas aren't as distinct and fleshed-out as in the 10yo. Still not bad at all and certainly a matter of taste (a friend of mine pefers the Storm to the 10yo, for example).
Talisker was my first experience with peat/smoke and I loved it, but my last bottle didn't seem the same and not in a good way. Have I been spoiled with Laphroig and Ardbeg or has Talisker changed?
Whiskies do change, even the most consistent distillation and aging process can't overcome all the environmental differences in the organics, wood, and weather conditions during the aging process. Our tastes change too. There are brands of Bourbon and Scotch that I loved when I first started drinking whisky and now I'm just not much of a fan. They haven't gotten worse, I've simply moved on to other flavor profiles. Laphroaig was my favorite Islay, then Ardbeg, then the peated and unpeated offerings from Bruichladdich. It's a good thing, in my opinion. I'm still happy to drink my old favorites, but I'm often on the hunt for something new, like the Heavily Peated series from Port Charlotte. Cheers!
Kevin - told you previously that the 10 had a seaweed iodine flavor I didn’t like. My understanding years ago was that seaweed was burned with the peat, explaining the taste.
Took a bottle to try on my vacation. Wasn't disappointed: solid taste for sauna and BBQ, soft hangover. But would still prefer a cheaper Caol Ila 12. Dark Storm tho is another story.
Talisker 10 is a very decent whisky. Unfortunately I can't recall if I ever had the Dark Storm. But what I do know is that I have the Port Ruighe, the port finished Talisker, and that it is a tasty whisky. Perhaps you might one day move away from island and try some highland or even Speyside peated whisky. Like the Ballechin or Balvenie Peat Week. Cheers and thanks for a nice episode.
