I'd like to think that I've watched a lot of horror movies, but one every day for a month is commitment! There's clearly a lot more I need to try. Personally, Insidious is in my top five of all time. Great to see some appreciation for it. The sequels, however, are a different story. I've only seen the second one, and it was ok, but nowhere near as good as the original. I've heard that they only get worse from there, dragging out an idea that doesn't need any further exploration.

Good to know on the Insidious sequels, I can definitely imagine how there's just not enough to the lore to support that big of a franchise

@@jakethemovienerd The filmmakers definitely realized they messed up in killing off Elise in the first film. She is a major factor in what makes the first film great and embodies a lot of the character for those films. Elise does a majority of the work in driving characters to where they need to be and what they need to do. Narratively, the sequels seem to flounder without Elise. They basically created a mentor character that couldn't really be killed off for the sake of the sequels. The second and the latest (the red door) are definitely the roughest films for the Insidious franchise and are also the films with the least Elise.
Personally, Insidious 3 was a really enjoyable/ well-made film. It is a prequel and can give some form of whiplash when you go in expecting to see more from the Lambert family. It also deviates from the narrative standards the previous 2 films followed. Aesthetically, 3 is more brutal and might actually verge closer to that R rating, but still holds onto a lot of the identity that made the first 2 films unique. It is also just really fun to see a debut from a budding horror director like Leigh Whannell. I recognize that 3 can be a bit controversial in terms of enjoyment, but I would definitely recommend checking it out sometime.

I really liked Skinemarink, mostly because for me it was the scariest thing I've ever seen. I watched it with my boyfriend, he wasn't really a fan, digged the vibes but found the movie boring. We came to the conclusion that your enjoyment of the movie heavy relies on how much you can put yourself in the shoes of the kids and how much you can get transpirted back to child-like state.

It's really interesting how this movie seems to be either a complete hit or a complete miss for people. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

I watched Hereditary back in 2021 (the first year I did this challenge) and I absolutely loved it. Here's a link to view everything I watched that year and how I ranked it: boxd.it/dAyWy

It's been a while since I've watched Sleepaway Camp, but the assessment that the film is suggesting "trans people bad/scary" is probably just flat out wrong from an ideological perspective. If anything, I would imagine that the Sleepaway camp narrative might actually parallel a lot of the conversation in favor of transgenderism. It's not like the killer willfully presents in a feminine way (this burden was thrust upon the killer by the eccentric aunt). Likewise, the condition/experience that seems to follow a good portion of trans people is that being forced to present in way that doesn't align with how they feel can be deeply distressing (dysphoria).
It's probably also just unfair to wager this type of complaint against Sleepaway Camp. The movie is deeply unserious and it would take a lot of effort to extract strong themes or messages from the film. The film does also include the gay parents and the scene where they are doing it in front of the kids, but I can't find a reason to interpret that as "gay parents all do this when they have kids present" or that "gay people make bad parents." Similarly, the killer is presented as female and happens to be the one on a murder spree, but I can't find a reason to interpret this as "trans people bad." These elements were most likely included in the film to provide some extra level of shock value and they remain shocking to this day.

This is a really great take; I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. I think overall, like you're saying, Sleepaway Camp is deeply unserious, and there aren't any strong or well-crafted pro or anti-transgender themes to take away from it. However, in that ambiguity and shallowness, there's room for people to interpret the ending in harmful ways or use it to support biased and hateful viewpoints. The shock value of the ending could have come from revealing Angela as a monster or a demon. But by making the reveal that Angela was nonconsensually transitioned, it feels exploitative of the trans community, and it weaponizes transgender identity for shock rather than offering any meaningful commentary.
