It is much easier to use the controls with your arm staying on the arm rest, than trying to poke at a screen at the end of your reach, while driving down the road. It also keeps your screen fingerprint free. The number pad is used for the entertainment center/nav, and is quicker than calling up a screen. I agree with you on the auto start/stop engines, but you don't have to deal with that on the diesel engines. I believe the US mileage standards force car makers to include that "feature".
sorry but personally in my opinion the round climate control. it makes it seems so cheap and also the numbers outside. they really need to get rid of the numbers. All mercedes interior has that which is why i wouldnt buy a mercedes
