Although I’ve never watched either show, just seen clips, I think the reason both shows are so popular is because they are not political, so it appeals to everyone. Neither show bashes anyone or try to tell anyone how to live their lives, what to believe or force a specific ideology down people’s throat. They do what shows during the early to mid-2000s and earlier did…entertained and let you forget about your problems and societal problems for 30 minutes or so. And if they did address specific issues, it was usually during few episodes per season and not every single episode. That’s why I love Golden Girls, it addressed a lot of issues that weren’t in the public forum like today, but they were not heavy handed with it. They made you aware but with humor that no matter your belief you could laugh as well as empathize.
