It’s worth noting that the DEFENSE formula isn’t actually data-mined, it was manually figured out, so it might not be 100% accurate. But it’s obviously close enough, but minor margins of error do occur , also if you press lock-on button mid attack animation, your damage will always be off by 1, so who knows what’s going.

THANK YOU for making a video that isn't just

Thank you for actually editing a video
I’ve heard you loud and clear: I should’ve, at a minimum, been using rtsr and power within. I’ll be sure to keep that in mind for future upcoming projects (DS3, Elden Ring, maybe even a revisit of Dark Souls with an optimized DPS build instead of just damage)!
justa heads up, percentage bonuses like hornet ring stack exponentially in ds1. its why FaP + havel gives so much equip load because its 1.2x1.5 not 1.7
Wonder how much longer that would've taken in you, in practice. No offense, but watching so many speedrunners destroy this game might've warped my perspective on most of the player base's skill.
Great video, though! Currently watching the RTSR follow-up and I can't wait to see more.
I enjoyed the not RTSR take on this idea, I casually do glitchless any% speedruns of this game with my fastest (read: still slow by speedrun standards) times around the 2 hr mark. I never use the RTSR or power within, just stronk boi melee with a black knight greatsword. Totes doable for the normal person with normal reflexes lol
I was intrigued by your choice to do chunk boi high poise armor strats for some of the bosses you want to dodge everything like stray demon explosions then not using poise armor to tank through gravelord nito and 4 kings. Chunk boi poise with high damage and hp means you can out dps and just tank the hits to keep bonking instead of getting knocked around over and over
Anyway, I appreciate that you are of a normal person's skill level with a high enthusiasm for the game and its inner workings. Feel free to play at your level. Improvement is always nice but don't let perfect be the enemy of good
Cheers, good video, thanks for the math!
but that would effect all weapons the same, so its not needed and imo much more interesting without
I'd say at least power within, RTSR requires an IDEAL play, for a more grounded experience power within is already a big boon that's too good to miss, was using it on all melee build because of how small requirements are that stack with resins/enchantments.
The NG+ video would just be a 10 second clip of him saying "Dark Bead at all times".
Just finished my all items ng+7 prep for the dlc so my recommended has been filled with fromsoft videos the past few weeks, but I have to say this was part of the cream of the crop.
Very relaxing delivery and interesting topic, cheers.
crazy ng+7,today i finished ng3
I remember doing that years ago. I did not have the DLC so my NG +7 and higher was only played within the main game. I got good, stopped playing before trying challenge/speed runs. Then I lost most of my skill when I tried to play years later. Take advantage of the fact your skills are fresh in this game.
Youre so good at this game because of your knowledge and at the same time so bad! I love it and im very frustrated by the gameplay too 10/10 vid
Not to sound too elitistic but him midrolling against some (early) bosses like against Quelaag was annoying
@@RandomGameClips27 hahaha yeah I got terminal cancer by it ahahaha I loved the video
that he is kinda bad makes it better, shows just how much perfectly optimised gear can carry you even if you play carelesly and don't pay attention. I like how in Souls you have two forces allowing you to best the difficulty, you rely on skill and mechanical execution or/and on gear and stats or summons. The old skill vs gear.
@@TrueKivan after gargoyles spend your souls to buy artorias crest key and get the stone armor from forest. fat roll with it wielding a 2handed Zweihander and grass crest shield on back. spam r1 until stamina runs out and drink estus. in ds1 estus does not make stamina regain slower. when u arrive at anor londo wear full havel armor and keep playing with this same strategy especially with 20 estus drinks. 2 easy to beat Nito, Seath and even 4 Kings with this ez strat
The damage formula seems awfully convoluted, no wonder defense is generelly pretty unclear.
Wow! Thanks for all the views everyone! A couple of notes that people have pointed out: I totally forgot you could go down to the blacksmith in New Londo without the master key, so technically I could’ve gotten a +5 before the Taurus Demon. I also probably should’ve thrown my stats up in screen for each fight to show where the AR of my weapons were coming from, I’ll keep that in mind for future videos. I think this run I finished at SL100 with 45ish strength and 35ish intelligence, whatever was needed to 2-shot Gwyn.
My next big project is ranking every weapon, generally by DPS with some personal input, and I hope to have that out mid-March as it is a big undertaking. In the meantime, I may do a video on explaining the Dark Souls damage formula as a bit of a precursor.
Additional notes: You had access to the Demon Great Hammer, I'm a little curious why it was not on the menu for the first several bosses. Also, even without the master key you have access to a Fire weapon from Vamos, as well as rtsr and power within immediately after you defeat the Taurus Demon via the Darkroot Basin. Not sure exactly what qualifies as a normal routing, but from a quick look you excluded rtsr and power within for the entire run which seems odd. I'm going back to finish watching the video now, but it just seemed so odd I had to comment.
No worries! The demons great hammer is a good weapon but I was sticking towards a ‘normal’ level up path, so I wasn’t at the strength requirement to wield it at that fight. Technically for ‘optimized’ damage you could grind to 99 strength and sec before the asylum demon haha. I failed to mention it in the video but I wanted to stay away from rtsr and power within to more so focus on the weapons instead of the busted damage stacking in DS1.
Also, just fwiw, infusions are really bad across the souls games as they tank your damage. I’ll explain further in my next video!
@@trevthedev6134 I have a great fondness for big number funny in souls games, so was curious about the lack of the classic combo lol. I know infusions are generally arse, it was mostly just for another smith pre-boss. I wasn't sure what level you were sticking to considering not using base magic weapon, so no level requirement for scaling could be useful. Maybe I'm just a complete nerd, but it would have been really nice to see a chart of weapons/buffs that you considered available at any point in progression and how they interacted with the boss you were targeting. Most people know lightning resin is better than fire but not how comparable the damage is, or at what spell adjust the various magic weapons start to compete. Of course it would result in a far more pedantic video than I think you were going for, but always an option
man I really look forward to these deep dives into your attempt at mathematically perfect souls. Truly is quality content and we do not deserve it
Minor idea to improve the damage early game, the Asylum Demon drops the Demon’s Great Hammer if you defeat him on your first attempt, which deals more damage than the Zweihander(I think, not sure what the motion values are). Since this is very easy to accomplish with Black Firebombs, it’s ultimately more optimal to use that as the early game weapon of choice.
Granted, the stat requirements would be a nightmare to get early game, but it would still be worth the grind, especially if you got the drop from the Taurus Demon, because then you wouldn’t have to grind the stats for that weapon.
Maybe the old pro +5 fire scythe in 10 minutes or less strategy could be used to get an early game weapon for farming purposes. So the process of gaining those levels would be easier.
This was nothing short of exceptional. I can't wait to watch your channel blow up. Thanks for the super interesting and well researched and commentated video!
Huh, didn't expect to see you here, I guess that Everything's Possible(tm) on RUclips
@@abusivewafflegaming4450I see what you did there!
I apologize for commenting so early in the video, but tail-cut weapons ARE guaranteed.
I find it silly when people complain that "Dark Souls is too hard, it needs an easy mode" when the game has so many different ways to completely break its difficulty. The game already has an easy mode, it's called being resourceful.
This game is hard for people who haven't played it more than a couple hours... I'm currently finishing an SL1 run to replace my SL5 darkwraith I built on PS3 (rip... YLoD). Even after not playing the game for a few years I can still parry and backstab most enemies without a problem. I think people think the game is hard because they're intimidated and think dying is bad.
Nice vid, might be worth a side note in the case of the Taurus Demon that by baiting him off the edge the world can deal a stupidly high damage number(whatever the trigger value is specifically). I understand the scope of this video is purely damage YOU can inflict though
For sure. Gravity is the number one killer in all of Fromsoft’s games haha
Im fairly certain falling into voids is a kill script not a damage script so technically it does no damage :)
@@noble3696 ahh gravity, or as i like to call it cheaterbane
@@noble3696 I would be interested to know, my thoughts would be invoking kill has to deal damage to change the healthbar ui
@@jimmynorman9897 in games most "instaKillScripts" are either a pure set {Health = 0} or just "doDeathStuff", while damage is a {Health -= Number}
percent damage would just calculate the number before using a raw number
for simplicity the "InstaKillscript" could just do the DeathStuff and to prevent player confusion shows the Health being set to zero as though damage
Hmm...an optimised Defense build? Dedicate yourself to making enemy attacks hit as close to zero as possible, while waiting them out with status effects and consumables, not sure if you'd use a shield in your endeavour to prove true Defense, but i guess if you did you could shield poke perhaps. Or just maybe full no-shield it to prove your dedication to immaculate Defense.
Is there a reason why you didn’t pick faith? I thought you would go with something like int until you can get your hands on the miracle, hence the deprived class.
You can glitch both souls for infinite levels and proof of a concord kept, allowing you to have a darkmoon blade at max covenant level surpassing the crystal catalyst, you can also switch to sunlight blade for bosses resistant to magic damage (or just alternating between the two in NG+). Power within also synergies well with weapon buffs
Edit: oh and the dragon+ ring buffs, forgot, thought at that point, it becomes impractical
What an amazing idea - and execution - of a video.
You will blow up, no doubts ;)
I love all your unique challenges!
Super entertaining video, with great gameplay, and excellent commentary. Thanks for finding all that stuff out! Can't wait to see what other videos you make and have made.
P.S. You should show off your whole build and stats at the end. Armour, levels, etc.
Totally deserved the attention this video is getting, it was suggested to me a few days ago and I've been binging your videos as i work since :)
Great vid so far, but I’ll be the “um actually” guy lol and point out you can upgrade your gear before Taurus demon. The hollow enemies can drop titanite shards and you can go to Rickert right before new londo and have him upgrade your stuff.
Just looked though the comments to see if someone mentioned it xD
Haha yeah a few people caught that! Idk why but I was thinking I needed the master key to get to him from the get go. Either way it’s just a single boss (though I’m guessing I probably could’ve 2 shot him with a +5, maybe even one shot with a plunge)
Good lord. That spell chasing at 33:45. Phew...

Congratulations on getting into DS content creation. I watched the full vid and it was entertaining. Good luck with your next projects.
This is an awesome playthrough! I love using mathematically optimal builds in games
Kalameet is gated by Artorios because you need Gough to shoot him down to actually fight him. Otherwise he just stays in the air carpet bombing the arena with fire breath soon as you set foot inside
You can beat him ranged, there’s even an extra dialogue from Gough if you managed to do it without his help
Very cool to find a new souls creator, making original content as a newer player to such a relatively old community! Loved this video
it'd literally just be pyromancy and then sorcery and then sorcery for truly optimized dps.
That Kalameet fight had me on the edge of my seat. Manus looked like it was getting pretty dicey too in some spots. I played Dark Souls right when it came out because I had a boner for fromsoft in high school because of Demons Souls and you, a dude who just started playing these games last year taught me something about damage scaling. Keep up the good work, your RTSR video blew my mind.
Hey Trev new to your channel and I’m loving your videos!

2:10 According to wikidot, there is a mistake here. The second range should read:
DMG = _x*( (19.2/49) * (x/D - 0.125)^2 + 0.1 )_
where x is attack and D is defense.
I honestly can barely read my own graphic lol nice catch. I do think I did use that for calcs, although that didn’t ever come into play in this run to my recollection

Holy shit; Joe Rogan playing Dark Souls??
Jokes aside, this was a nice video. I enjoyed your explanations and commentary!
Enjoying the video! Really satisfies my dark souls love while combining it with my inner dnd powergamer. One curiosity I have is you mentioned how split damage is just worse in so many situations, how would the tumble buffing glitch from OG DS1 impact its viabiility?
I remember I used to do a mage with a lightning uchi + gltiching crystal weapon onto it as my base replay character typically.
Hmm well adding a weapon buff is always better than not and usually better than an infusion, but I would guess that against most enemies a +15 with CMW would probably out damage a lightning one with the tumble buff.
I am curious based on your comment however how a lightning weapon buffed with sunlight blade or gold line resin would work. Would the lightning damage instances be calculated separately or would they be calculated as one? This will be part of my upcoming video, but innate weapon damage uses the Motion value of the weapon (so a 2-handed attack would be multiplied by 1.2) where a added buff isn’t multiples at all, so with split damage that is an interesting edge case.
The mathematically optimized damage rout would probably be something like what I did for my optimized build, which is to get the master key by either means, (or do the lower undead burg skip) kill the Capra Demon first, and then upgrade the highest strength weapon (Demon's Greataxe from Shiva of the East) all the way to plus 15. From there you pretty much just need Power Within before you fight the next boss (whichever you choose). From there, once you have your STR at the soft cap, the only further goal should be to get the best catalyst you can at this point in the game, make sure you have enough int to use it, and whatever the strongest magic weapon spell you can get is. Once you reach Gwyndolyn you will have to switch to her Faith-based magic weapon spell and catalysts, because it is better. You will need to max out her covenant to get the most out of this.
Yeah I made some improvements, mostly along the lines of what you detailed, in my video from yesterday!
loved the video, do more on dark souls 1 and 2!
33:47 lol he went to the prometheus school of rolling away from things
Man the tracking on those things always throws me off. Am used to attacks like that fizzling out
Hey man I really enjoy your content and effort. This video is amazing. One little note tho. You should adjust your mic input sensitivity so we dont hear you breathing. Great video and awesome work. Sorry for being mean someone just needs to say it.
No worries about the feedback. I'm using a headset with no filter and I don't love the breathy feedback either. May get a new mic soon or at lest see if I can get a slip-on filter
Grinding on slimes works a lot better with fire
That is the second weapon with the most damage that I found, the first is the enchanted great ax at +5 which with all the same improvements does 1857 base damage 💀
For the maximum DPS run, people have been recommending the painting guardian sword with a maxed out darkmoon blade buff forever. It's a grind and a half to get both of those, but I wonder how it actually stacks up.
So do I! I’m actually in the process of ranking every weapon by maximum dps output as we speak!
Killer video! Would love to see you do this with ds3
Also, I'd definitely enjoy the DS3 version of this you mentioned during the Manus fight!
Enjoying the video (just saw you handle the moonlight butterfly), but how are you working with levels? Do you have a level cap per boss you aim for, or is it just whatever stats you have when you get to a boss? Apologies if I missed that information.
Nah I didn’t really explain it. I probably could’ve thrown them up here and there but I basically went about 3 levels per boss on average, making sure to hit soft caps in vitality and endurance along the way. I think I finished around 48 strength and like 40 int!
(another comment lol) I think the tier list of game weapons by DPS output against late game bosses is a cool idea, specially for me since Dark Souls is my comfort game (ironically) so I always go back to it regularly and I love trying out new weapons and new builds and seeing things, would be fun to look at some alternatives I'm yet to consider (and well, I suppose that something similar for all the fromsoft titles would be neat too)
I mean this with absolutely no connotation but you commentate like a pilot for a commercial airline
Lmao I don’t know if I should take that as a compliment. I tend to put on a voice unintentionally when doing voiceover for this stuff that I think I borrow from doing sports pbp stuff.
I can tell this'll be a good channel
Great video man
Cool run! Gives a sense of what Fromsoft was expecting players to be using. Think you could optimize a little better by changing from damage per hit to damage per second in your weapon selection.
No PNG, an "A" missing. Clearly a thumbnail worthy of 80.000 views.
Brother as soon as you figure out the algorithm let me know lol
Cool video! I bet the dps run would be more varied, but I'll wait for your big project instead of trying to figure it out with my smooth brain.
For sure. I think I’ll probably do this in dark souls 3 and go the dps route instead of just raw damage. Will just be a bigger ordeal lol
I feel that for when you showed the formulas at the start, it would have been helpful to show the continuous function graphed, so that we can see visually which parts of the function might grow faster than others
I’ll keep it in mind, not a bad idea to throw one up on my next video.
couldn't you use rickert to get your zweihander to +5 early or does he only do magic reinforcement
Hmm you know what you’re probably right? I had it in my mind I needed the master key to get down there early but i don’t think that’s actually correct. At least it’s just a single boss haha
"going to avoid tail cut weapons as they're not guaranteed"
yes they are
also pinwheel that early is absolutely not the intended route, you're directed towards the undead church, and blighttown at the same time, you're only directed towards pinwheel after you get the lordvessel, npcs in the game have dialogue, which you're blatantly ignoring and i'm not sure why
Yeah there were some routing mistakes and it’s probably not ‘optimized’ if you will. Working to make a better path for an optimized dps route instead!
Only 1k subs? this is good content...
With DPS optimization I wonder if it's possible to include attack timing (so, how much time an attack takes (including a bit to run up to hit) and how many of boss's attacks provide required timespan. It is a more specific information though
FYI, darkmoon blade out damages crystal magic weapon. It just requires a significant farm if you don't pvp or dupe the items necessary to +3 the covenant.
It does, but you can’t technically do all bosses and still use it as you break the covenant by killing Gwyndolin.
i really enjoyed watching this video. i would like to see dark souls 3 next :)
All i want in life is a mod that replace sif boss fight with a petting minigame
Standing next to Quelaag's spider head (between the head and the leg) is actually a mostly safe place, her sword attacks cannot hit you from there Im pretty sure.
At the very least the times Ive stood there she has not been able to.
Seeing that absolutely absurd defense formula makes it even funnier that Joseph Anderson got mad at Breath of the Wild and Dragon's Dogma for not working the same way he (thought) DS worked
Waiting for the 17 revision videos as everyone slowly combines their knowledge
Really good buddd!!!
It would be interesting to see it optimized still without the master key, but with not following normal progression. You can get +5 in undead burg by farming hollow soldiers for titanite and going to the sorcerer blacksmith in new Londo ruins.
I may revisit once I have my weapons ranking done for the game, doing an optimized dps run
Is getting a fire enchantment for the zweihander early on not considered a normal run? Or did you just not get it because it would ruin the zweihander later? That's a classic setup for giant dad builds and the plunging attack for an un-upgraded fire zweihander almost oneshots the taurus demon
could do a souls mimic challenge, where you pick one of the games and you have to gear yourself to near match the boss for the area? use same weapon/weapon type, use similar armor
Or even a rebellion run, play as a foot soldier and only use standard soldier/knight equipment.
Is defense like this? A massive piecewise function series like this? Might explain why defense seems to drop off pretty hard after awhile.
Hmm I don’t know if it’s the same exact formula but it’s pretty close. There are definitely some benchmarks you want to hit once you get to certain areas but I’m not sure what they are exactly
Great video, enjoyed the math :) You just gotta practice those rolls a bit 😅
Do motion values affect the resulting damage of a weapon after the reduction from defence is calculated, or does it affect the attack before the reduction from defence is calculated??
It is before. So if you are at one of the middle 3 thresholds, the ‘Attack’ rating is modified; e.g., if 2 weapons have the same AR, but a one-handed attack has an MV of 100 and a two-handed attack has an MV of 120, the attack rating in the formula is multiplied and then the damage is calculated. It will vary based on what ‘tier’ of damage you are in, but IIRC a 120 MV will do slightly less than 20 more damage due to the way it works. Maybe I’ll make a video going into damage formulas and MVs? Perhaps that’ll be next as I work on the weapons ranking as I think that will take me more than a week.
@thechosenflutterbox whoops I misspoke. A higher MV will result in a higher damage output compared to the difference in MV. For example, a weapon with an AR of 200 and attacks with MVs of 100 and 150 (IIRC onehanded and two handed attacks from the Balder Side Sword) will result in damage of 137 and 220 on an enemy with 100 defense. So 60% damage increase compared to 50% MV increase
@@trevthedev6134 sweet, thank you 👍 I thought it worked that way cuz two-handing split-damage weapons always dealt more damage than I thought it should so that makes more sense now
Loved this challenge ❤
You have a very soothing voice, a great companion to my toothache. I’ll stick around for more
interesting premise. earned a sub
I haven't really understood how the MV number affects the total damage. Can someone explain?
I think I’ll make a video explaining that type of stuff in further detail for one of my next projects. But essentially each attack has a value associated with it that multiple the weapons attack rating (most one handed light attacks are 100, most two handed light attacks are 120, so the attack rating gets multiplied by 100/100 or 120/100 respectively). Important to note that going from an MV of 120 to 100 will actually increase your damage by more than 20% (depends on defenses, but around 22-25%).
@trevthedev6134 Thanks, man. Keep it up 👍👍👍
It might have been obvious by now, but if you jump attack while you're plunging attack, you can occasionally double-dip and do some extra damage if the weapon hit box collides with the enemy before the plunging attack animation starts playing.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the best weapon buff in the entire game is Darkmoon Blade, it has a higher magic adjust with enough Concord Kepts, oh, and you forgot to get Power Within after killing Quelaag man.
Yeah I did make some mistakes so optimized isn’t the right word for this video in hindsight. Working to try and make it a little better when I return to do a DPS run instead of damage only

How can your dmg be optimised without RTSR?
If you try the opposite of this run. (Worst possible damage/stats) sl1, broken straight sword with no durability, no armor, no shields, no buffs. It sounds like torture but it could be a great challenge
Haha I don’t know if I want to do that. I might do a ‘best-worst’ style run where I still go through the game and get as strong as possible while using the worst damaging weapons outside of meme run weapons (straight sword hilt, broken straight sword, skull lantern, etc.)
@trevthedev6134 yeah, I totally wouldn't wanna attempt the worst damage possible run either. Just a funny idea, I do really like the best-worst damage run idea a lot more.
I actually think it's nice that you didn't use rtsr or pw because those can be a bit tricky to use as a casual player, also it would have been nice to see the damage setup (weapon name, weapon upgrade, buffs) alongside all the numbers on the screen, I know the info is in the voice over but having all the info on screen at all time would make it easier to follow
now I'm jealous I don't have some cool dark souls video ideas like you just to give myself an excuse to replay this game
Yep always working to improve graphics for upcoming stuff! I think throwing important damage stats in the top right will be helpful (did this for the manus catalyst video). I am used to having 99 in everything for my NG+++++++ one shot videos so it didnt really matter there.
Surprised you didnt elect to use RTSR or power within a lot earlier. That would have definitely increased your damage from blighttown onward, but i respect the choice to not use it entirely to see the limits.
Just curious, but for the Taurus demon, couldn’t you have used the blacksmith in new londo ruins?
Yeah someone else said the same thing. IDK why but I had it in my mind that I needed the master key to get there. Either way at least it was only a single boss!
Truly optimized would be killing Taurus and restarting every time you don't get his axe 😉
i am almost positive you can get to andre without the master key, reliably...just not easily. now i could be wrong cause i dont remember the full details but if i am not mistaken you only need the master key to get into the valley of the drakes from firelink shrine, but you can get into new londo ruins. if you follow new londo ruins and open the door draining the ruins you can then leave through that area, go up the tower straight across the bridge, go through the darkroot basin and up into the undead parish. its super roundabout but doable.i always think of that route when i hear people say something like "cant use the back entrance to blight town cause i didnt grab the key" like yes you can, you just have to go the super long route through the parish, through the basin, and through the valley of the drakes. now where i might be wrong about getting to andre is that i just dont remember if you need the key from ingward in order to drain new londo ruins. if you do need his key then according to the rules of this run yes you couldnt make that trip but if you dont need the key to drain it then its a 100% viable route to take its just ridiculous hard at early levels cause those ghosts will mess you up.
Yeah you cant drain without the key.
@user-sd9dk5ir7v ah, I couldn't remember that part so I wasn't sure. I know I did get the key from him the legit way but I couldn't remember if that was purely to access the 4 kings or if that was to open the gate.
Why didn't you upgrade your weapon at vendrick before Taurus demon?
Just a routing mistake. Thought I had to have the master key before heading down there for some reason! Been a while since I didn't choose it as my starting gift so just had that in my mind.
