The growing tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban is fascinating in so many ways. Having nurtured the group, Islamabad no doubt hoped it would be able to control it once they retook control in Afghanistan. But it doesn't seem to be working out as planned. However, it's the historical dimensions of the issue that makes it particularly interesting. So, do you think there is a serious conflict in the making? And will we see the Taliban in Afghanistan make a serious claim on the border? Thoughts and comments below.
Also, please do take a look at World Politics Review. Their support really helps the channel develop. Many thanks. www.wpr.pub/jkl

Afghanistan is in Central Asia, not South Asia! The British Empire tried to promote Afghanistan as a part of South Asia to incorporate it into the British Raj back in the colonial days! Afghanistan is a part of the Iranian Plateau which is in Central and West Asia.
Also, the Pashto language is not just related to Iranian, it is Iranian! Farsi is the most dominant Iranian language, but not the only Iranian language. Other languages that are Iranian include Kurdish, Balochi, etcetera. Also, Pashtuns are culturally and ethnically Iranian - along with the rest of Afghanistan's population.

@@selwyncaspar8067 Typical Western colonial "divide and conquer" narrative. Being Iranian pertains to language, culture, history and ethnicity, not religion. Most Arabs in Iraq are Shia but that does not make them Iranian. Similarly, the Kurds in Iraq are Sunni but that does not make them Arabs. Kurds are Iranian. They speak an Iranian language, have an Iranian culture and have historically always been a part of Iranian history. The exact same can be said of Pashtuns and Baloch.

If you are telling me that Indian RAW is run by angles which I can see with my vivied eyes than perhaps I can believe you. Unlike Indian counterparts, she is willing to accept yes there are extermsmist problems inside Pakistan. After all, Pakistan had to fight your ally USSR, a super power, to defend itself. Let's see how India will fight against China. For starters, China took some 2000+KM of Indian territory yet I didn't hear any surgical strike inside China by the Indians.

They didn't like it one bit that the previous Afghan govt's were close to India - so did everything covertly to undermine them & the Americans that helped the Taliban return to power in Aug 2021. Today they are getting their 'just desserts' for all this that they did! In addition when they keep on secretly nurturing & financing disparate terrorist groups, it is no surprise that PAK has now lost control over most of them that even former P.M. Imran Khan tried to negotiate with one of them & had to even free their leader from prison!

It was very exhausting for India maintaining relations with Pakistan . One side we had to go for peace talks when Pakistan was sending and still sending highly trained terrorists into India(Pakistan military trains these terrorists) and our soldiers dying while defending our country. Once we stopped talking we are much better now. But trade was still going between our countries. But Pakistan stopped the trade completely so its their fault. They bought medicines, agri produce, tyres etc from India. They will let their people suffer just for their religion and Kashmir which they can never win from India. Their military officers and politicians are billionaires in UK and US with dual citizenships. Their population is highly radicalized and illiterate. Those who are educated and sensible leave the country to settle outside. Their economy was so much ahead of India upto 2000s but now their breakaway part Bangladesh is even doing better than Srilanka. So who is to blame for this mess.

And most interesting thing is here is that Pakistani pashtuns have the most anti-taliban sentiment as they suffered from taliban attacks a lot than many other provinces and also faced discrimination from other ethnicities as during the early terrorism wave in Pakistan (2008-2014)pakistan taliban(TTP)was made up of majority radicalized pakistani pashtuns and afghan taliban.

This topic is quite personally important to me too because when I was a university student, I organised a forum about the Taliban in Afghanistan with a local expert, Dr. Ahmad El-Muhammady (expert in counterterrorism from the International Islamic University of Malaysia).
In the forum, there was a lot of optimism that the Taliban may bring Afghanistan to a new positive era given the Taliban’s commitment at the time. Eventually, we can already see a lot of changes which were not expected but strained relationships between the Afghan Taliban and Pakistan is something I least expected! Pakistan for me in my thoughts has been potentially dangerous state that was created out of de-colonization, and this is because of the nuclear weapons they currently possess. Thanks for covering this topic because Pakistan could become an issue of internation concern like a thief in the night, which no one expects. Pakistan is truly a pandora's box with so many under currents of tribalism thar could cause the collapse of the Pakistani state. And this would be a concern not just for India next door, but also the world.

The best way forward for Pakistan would be to sign a peace and cooperation agreement with India enabling it to give up its nuclear arsenal and unnecessary large spending on defense .
The money saved can be put to good use by development projects which would improve the lives of ordinary Pakistanis .
As for Afghanistan they are truly a failed state with no hope of any thing until the people get rid of the taliban and bring in more democracy and allow women back into society .

Pakistan may have to eventually let the "border region" go, the big question is what does the Pakistan Taliban want ? I have heard it said by observers that they want Pakistan to adhere to a much stricter version of Sharia. , If that is indeed the case, it could actually trigger the fragmentation of Pakistan.

Thank you for the video professor. It seems like borders in maps are increasingly losing any relevance in the area. Indeed, it seems like Pakistan is in quite a pickle right now. Inner political tensions are high, economy is in ruins and now Taliban backed insurgencies.I fear that Pakistan might be plunged into total chaos because of the inner political and economical crisis. In the case, if nation building is your trade, I guess this is where to look for new ones. Because of that, I have serious concerns that Pakistan is militarily unable to stop Afghanistan right now from taking control over the Pashtune areas of Pakistan and in time, de facto annexing the east of Pakistan.

While Pakistan did (and still does) engage with Taliban for geo-strategic and open border security reasons it is incorrect to assert that Pakistan created and nurtured the Taliban. For what reason? Unless as facts later proved, CIA and the US military intelligence were the masterminds behind the initial recruitment and training of Mujahideen, the front runners of the Taliban, providing them with millions of dollars plus ammunition including stinger missiles to fight the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Later, as events unfolded, the infighting among the Taliban was due to a power struggle that continues to this day. Pakistan has been a hapless victim in all this drama. Pakistan gave the US its airbases and NATO supply route only to get screwed in the end by both the US and Taliban.
