This lesson covers a pretty simple exercise for helping build speed with fast sixteenth note funk grooves. It uses variations on a basic groove working up in speed from 90bpm to 120bpm.
Have fun and visit www.talkingbass.net for more videos, articles and downloads.
The best lesson on this topic I have come across. Even as a quite experienced bass player who has always struggled with fingerstyle funk I appreciate your "step by step evolution" of the line.
Best bass instructor
Great tutorial. I'm a guitar player and learning to play bass, quicly picking is a struggle at the moment. This helps a lot, thanks
Noooooo, stick with guitar Short Bus!
Exactly what I was looking for!
Thanx a lot!!
Really good exercise, thank you
Great work as always man. Thanks!
Thanks man, excellent exrcise!
An exercise on how to play fire by jimi hendrix!
Why skip the raking for this lesson? I know its for stamina, but I would guess that its nice to stick with the raking to get used to that as well, if the bass player uses the raking technique in general
I've got the same question. Is it only for this excercise, or should the raking be avoided all times in line like this ?
@@byilmaz42 I think only for this exercise. Raking definitely has its uses especially for faster descending lines. If you were to rake with this exercise, you'd end up having your fingers switched when the pattern repeats (at least for the 1st variation with AA C# D D# E FF), but in itself I think is a great exercise to practice raking with both index and middle :)
I like how you ignore the fret buzz
Excellent! can i ask you a question? the tip of the finger of right hand should be curved or straight?
I’m guessing you’ve either stopped playing bass or figured this out by now, but for anyone in the future reading this comment; You are NOT supposed to “hook” the string on your finger. You will be playing with basically flat fingertips, but they will naturally curve under the string just slightly since you’re picking it upwards. This is the sort of thing which will only go wrong of you think about it, so just play in the way that feels most natural.
@@headsetsquirrel2581 luckily i'm still playing it, however thanks for your answer!
@@threarth Wow, I was not expecting an answer from a 5 year old comment. Well, in that case you’ve been playing for longer than I have, so I shouldn’t really be say anything. Good on you for sticking with the instrument though!
@@headsetsquirrel2581 Sometimes playing what feels natural won't work for this. There is a lot of mechanics behind this fast plucking that is rarely discussed in detail by tutors. I find I have to make contact with the string as close to the fingernail as possible and hit the string close to the surface that faces opposite the fret board and not aim to rest on the string above, otherwise I am fighting string tension and can't get any speed.I wish tutors would use simple diagrams occasionally instead of describing techniques with ambiguous or flawed terms like "Slapping through the string".
Aka shout or bump music
What’s the best way to increase metronome tempo ?
Slowly
