I live in this area, and went into the store on its final day today. Not unsurprisingly, not much was still left and anything that was was marked down to 90%, and that did draw a big enough crowd of people going in filling carts full of bargains. Most of the store was cut off from people exploring, as also expected, and you can tell that everyone working in there were tired and worn out, most not fully caring about everything going on, but also some seemed a bit sad likely because of this being the last day.
You are correct that Kmart leaving is going to be a huge blow to this part of town, but unfortunately that's been an issue for many years now. The middle and uptown areas of Kenosha are in disrepair, under-served, and I don't feel like the city is doing much to try and curb the crime and poverty of those areas. They're too focused on fixing up downtown (which, without a doubt, does need some attention as well) and areas closer towards Highways 50, 94, and 31 and it makes the other areas of Kenosha much worse. As described in this video, for people around the Kmart, the only place now for groceries are a couple of local grocerers (there's a couple of Mexican-based small grocery chains right up the road) and Dollar Tree (which, having been in there, doesn't have a large enough selection, even compared to other Dollar Trees in town). I'm not actually too sure how long Dollar Tree may even have in this plaza since now its main anchors are gone, and I feel the same for some of the other fast food places around (the Burger King suddenly closed sometime after the start of the year that was in the same section of the Kmart and the also closed Save-a-Lot), although maybe because a few of them aren't very common in Kenosha they may still be fine (KFC and Wendy's in particular, and possibly McDonald's but namely for the aesthetic; it was one of those old 50s designs although it was modernized on the inside within the last 1-2 years).
But with these anchors gone, plus ShopKo and Piggly Wiggly's departures from the area, it's going to be even harder for this side of town to get better, not unless the city decides to put a bunch of focus on it. And it's kinda sad, because I love my town and I want all of it to thrive and survive, and this area - as well as much of Uptown - could be amazing places for people to live, shop, work, and grow but not if the city tries to make it a focus as well.
I'll add one slight correction to this video though: the vacant Walmart is no longer vacant! After several years of abandonment, it was bought up by U-Haul, which is going through the process of turning it into a self-storage and truck rental place. Something that is starting to become more common of closing and abandoned retail spaces, I've noted, as that also happened to the old Supervalu on 80th several years ago after Festival bought them out and their new building - right next door - was finished. So at least the building is now being used, although not sure how much it's going to help out the community.

i couldn’t agree more, it’s sad to see this area of town suffer so much. i grew up going to this kmart and the also closed walmart with my mom so i have a lot of memories of it, and she also grew up going to this kmart. it was a really big deal for families in that area of town when it first opened. i really hope that more focus can be brought to these areas in the future.

@@deetdeettv4945 I really hope so! The area has a lot of great buildings for retail space - although I do think some of them could benefit from some sprucing up given the age of said buildings - and it'd be nice if this area could be revitalized a lot more versus the focus being more on downtown. Not that downtown doesn't need it, because it does, but it's a lot more vibrant than the 52nd/Pershing/39th area.

Most places need updates every 10 years or so. The last time Kmart's truly saw that was the late-90's when they were being converted to Big Kmart. That was 20 years ago, so at the very minimum, two updates should have been done, and they weren't. Topping it off when you have stores built in the 60's and 70's, you need to update them even more frequently, because they will deteriorate quicker than newer buildings.
It's fine to have an old building, but you're going to have to spend money to update the stores, and you can see Kmart (especially under Lampert) spent the least possible they could have. Sure, they put in Verifones (chip readers), but they were forced by law to do that, and they put in some new signage, checkout lights, and the like, but those are super cheap, paper and plastic that won't cost much, the shelving is from the 2001 or before, same with the coolers and that. People didn't mind as much in the 2000's, but come the 2010's it's looking heavily dated.
Topping it off, Kmart has no niche, no reason to go to them other than convenience. You mention having a car, if people do, they're not going to go to Kmart's that look like they're still operating (for the most part) in 1999. When Martha Stewart left them, they lost the biggest draw for shoppers. Now, they only get people who are close, or those like me who really love their brands to stick with them- I'm rare.
Kmart is a dying brand, it's under 100 stores, and by the summer or fall we could be looking back at these videos as the only remnants of the retailer (outside the physical products bought from them).

You are correct in inventory status. I would say the store was 25% empty at time of announcement of closure. Oddly TransformCo owns the entire Plaza including the newly built Taco Bell. This store did decent business and when Shopko closed I told the Store Manager who is now gone this was the chance to spruce the store up, change the faded signs and capture those Shopko customers. He agreed but said he could get Zero help from Corporate. No good use for this building. However on Kmarts Facebook they say they will be opening and re-opening stores. No vendor will sell to Lampert on credit and all orders require cash which is something he lacks until he takes company public if he ever does.

I always like Christmas in our Kmart store. Much nicer than Walmart. I understand the odor issue but why is the look of a store such a big deal? My favorite little grocery in my town was old and shabby but sold great stuff. The pharmacy I went to looked 1950 with a soda fountain and my hardware store had an iinch of dust on everything but had stuff nobody else did. I didn't care if Kmart looked old. They had stuff I liked and wont get elsewhere. I sure as hell won't go to Walmart.

I thought their clothes were priced fairly low. I bought casual slacks for $15, nice dress shirts for as low as %10 and Thom McAnn dress shoes for about $30. The few clothing items I bought at Walmart were cheap junk that didn't hold up. Never again.
