- Skooliepalooza 2022 has come and gone, and we're really sad about that. To be honest, we had a preconceived notion about what a "skoolie" was before this. When Michael was young, friends of his parents had one that they used for fishing and hunting. Basically it was a stripped down school bus with a rickety bed, a gas stove, and a wood stove heater. Nothing much else. So every time he saw one on the road, he'd just assume it looked the same inside.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, there are some that are pretty bare bones. But many of the skoolies we saw this year were as nice as some large RVs and certainly had more personality built into them.
In this video, we tour several skoolies at Skooliepalooza so that you can take a peek inside!
There's not much you can do to make a school bus look like anything other than a bus on the outside, but don't judge a book by its cover.
Some of these are beautiful, comfortable spaces with most of the comforts of home.

Michael and Halef live in Atlanta, GA, but are originally from Canada and Indonesia, respectively. They love to travel and try to do it as much as possible. They saved for a few years and are currently on a long-term round the world trip!
Why do all the buses have Vermont plates? Yes it's because Vermont doesn't require residency to title and register a bus and furthermore convert a title from a "bus" to "RV" which makes it easier to get insurance.
A bus is a solid platform where you the creator can personalize it to suit any needs. More so than any Van or RV conversion. They are typically more expensive to travel in due to weight, but not overly much more than a typical RV. And they have higher wheel base than an RV, meaning more boondocking capability.

Enjoy your video, Natalie and Jimmy seem like such nice people. I've watched a lot of there videos starting with their bus build videos. They did a great job on their conversion. Even a little something different in their bathroom. The toilet is on a slider and it can be slide back into a little cubby hole so its out of the way giving more room for the shower. I think its a pretty smart thing to do in a such small space.

How do you keep the water tanks from freezing, if you travel to cold weathered States?
It helps to have the tanks inside the cabin, assuming that you also have heaters to warm up the space.
See we want to go to this event with our bus but we have heard so may stories of dogs roaming around and animals getting hurt or dogs getting into fights that it makes us worried to go.
Fair enough. Most dogs that we encountered were friendly and on leash, although there were some off leashed dogs around as well. We (including our GSD Kana) had no problems with random dogs while attending.
