Hiccup from the original How to Train Your Dragon books would probably qualify. Though those books are definitely aimed at a younger audience.
written? light novels have shittons of isekai too
Light novel Kirito is basically what she's asking for
Ok, she doesnt understand that nerd was replaced by geek, a nerd was an insult for someone not very social but hyper intelligent that is focused on sciense, Peter parker started as the golden example of this, a geek was described as someone socially awkward who is into sci-fi media growing up (comic books/novels/books/table games) but now geek means a fucking man child that collects funko pops and waste his money consuming similar media in his 30s or 40s.
Lumi wants a geek that is hyper focused on something like hobby/job and that makes them better than everyonelse in the story, which has been done to death in isekai novels/mangas/detective novels.
Assendance of a Bookworm
Knight's and magic is an isekai about a programer/giant mecha fan being reborn into a fantasy world with magic powered mecha. Applying his nerd knowledge to the magic system he is able design and pilot cool mechs. I think it fits the criteria.
nobody remembers TWGOK
I don't know why my brain thought Cbat was starting at the beginning. 💀
I think most detective novels are like that, nancy drew is a good example.
Lumi, you’re talking about a geek not a nerd. Nerd’s are smart.
Also Genshiken.
I'd propose Sam Gamgee in lord of the rings, it doesn't really come through in the movies but he's a real nerd when it comes to horticulture and he also properly geeks out about meeting elves.
I never thought of Sam Gamgee as a "nerd" before, but now I can't unsee it.
I think if she dismisses Hermione as being a main character, she would also not accept Sam as being a main character. Granted, her goalposts keep moving.
In regards to female characters i'd honestly say MaoMao from Apothecary dairies, much like SAO it was a light novel before the manga & the anime. The girl just get's landed in odd situations and is like welp i'm in and then obsesses over it =p
When it comes to western media though, think she has point especially regarding female MC's, I cant think fo a nerdy one off the top of my head.
People who have innate interest in the details of what makes something good can be a character, though it might be a more possible to happen in JP media, cause it's more common practice over there (to get interested in the details)
I remember the main character of Stargate (the Roland Emmerich movie) was kind of a dweeb who nerds out over ancient Egyptian stuff that he finds, according to Wikipedia there's a novel series based on it, maybe he's the main character in those also? And maybe I'm misremembering but I think some Michael Crichton main characters were geeks?
Yeah Timeline for sure
Lindon from the Cradle books perfectly fits this. Guy is a massive nerd for the world’s martial arts but was raised saying he could never learn it.
Seconding Lindon. The way he geeks out over learning the magic system is very fun.
Only issue is that he is built like a tank, though that doesn't really mater when you're dealing with insane kung-fu magic.
Closest I can think of is Senku from Dr. Stone.
If passion is what counts, there's plenty of light novels.
Go read Ascendance of a Bookworm. Literally what she's asking for with the added bonus of being the greatest thing ever written.
Read Worm.
Based Worm enjoyer
true patrician taste
A man of culture
Sherlock Holmes...?
Guys think of lumi's self insertion. Next time you read a book print her model and use it as a page 🔖 bookmark.
Not printed media.
But aldonoah zero protag was not only nerdy, but downright autistic... And not in the modern sense of the word. The dude really was in the spectrum
And everyone hated him at the time
Most Neal Stephenson novels have some sort nerd main character.
The Laundry Files by Charles Stross might count? It's a nerd/glorified IT worker working for the discount SCP foundation; where the central point is "magic can be scienced and engineered". Later on it falls off but I remember the first few books being a decent read, and did have elements of "wow, this abuse of magic is amazing".
And maybe Anathem (Neal Stephenson), but the first bit of the book was a bit of a slog; and I don't know that I'd call the main character, say, otaku levels of enthusiastic. Has been a while though.
I think bobiverse would also count, but it's kind of written that way on purpose.
@@daznis Aye... it's almost to the point of "does it really count if it's written for nerds"- the ideal would be having a protag that is a nerd, but that's near completely unrelated to the story at hand- and I can't think of anything that qualifies for that off hand, but I'm also not that well read.
The books aren't very good but if she's just looking for reddit tier spam references Dresden files would work
The _Dune_ series is literally about the quest for superhuman space autism. Similarly, the God Emperor of Mankind in Warhams is basically a fedora-tipping atheist who uses his brain powers to convince humanity he's a golden giant. He's such a technology nerd he puts the machine cult to shame. Then he gets locked away for 10,000 years and rarely talks to anyone.
tl;dr: The Emprah is superhuman Chris-Chan and the webway project was his Sonichu fanfic.
Literal woman moment
Isn't Peter Parker considered a nerd?
yes Gwen too but maybe not autistic enough for Lumi lol
Comic
Ready player one?
Garbage near-unreadable book but you’re right
Neuromancer maybe?
