    I haven't tried the clay method myself, but I saw a video where the clay was stuck onto the thread first. The the wires were poked in fairly well lined up. This leaves both hands totally free to make adjustments and take the measurement.
    It looked pretty practical, I think I'll try it.

    Been watching for a while but I just now noticed in your opener the lathe tool storage wall. I am stealing that for the home shop. A video on tool storage ideas for the home shop (compact, cheap) would be a good one!

      Hi Philip! One of my early videos covers quick change tool posts and I show that rack in better detail. In the years since I've found myself wanting something that holds them a little differently so I can get more density/see the tools better. My welder is in storage right now, so that will probably have to wait. Besides, nobody wants to see me weld.

    Very entertaining! You might consider comparing the 3 wire method to the 1 wire method. Joe Pi described it in one of his videos, but didn't comment on its accuracy. If accurate enough, the 1 wire method should be easier for us fumble-fingered individuals.

    I use grease but I broke down and bought a set of holders from flexbar. They were cheap and seemed to work well although I did not do any comparison to see if they effected accuracy. I found they work best for smaller threaded parts were the grease did not work that well, at least for me.

    Have you ever use tape to tape one end of the wire? it very convention for me for difference size of wire and thread. tape two wires parallelly together space apart as a pit wide, tape one wire on one end of the tape, when folding the tape the two wires and one wire make it about the same as pit diameter.

    Hi, Stuart. My question is off-topic; I hope you don't mind. I received a brand new set of gage blocs today. I have an older set that was purchased on CL and came from the toolroom of a company I once did business with. Small world. As those blocs aren't in great shape, it was time for an upgrade. Naturally, they're wrapped and protected with a coating. What would you suggest for removing the coating? I was told not to use alcohol, as the blocs would be "too clean." Is these such a thing? I have a number of degreasers and solvents. Just not sure what to grab. This is my first ever new set of blocs and I'm feeling a bit cautious. Would a good degreaser be the way to go, or perhaps a solvent for a more masculine approach? Thank you in advance!

      I would use brake cleaner to get the crud off and then coat them with a light oil or WD-40 to keep the moisture away.

    Wires are a misused technique. They are 3rd rate for measuring threads being machined. They are intended only for perfect threads such as on a ground thread plug gage where the thread form is dead on. Better is a thread micrometer that can account for some form variation and best of all is a calibrated precision thread ring gage. Wires can show a good measurement when the thread is actually a reject. Ask me how I know.

    • @oh8wingman
      @oh8wingman 11 месяцев назад +1

      There is no doubt that thread mikes probably the best way to measure thread pitch. The problem is the cost. Most if not all thread pitch mikes don't come with all of the anvils one might need. You can easily spend a could a couple of hundred more to get the full range of available anvils. In addition, to measure ACME tread you will need five micrometers to cover the range up to 5" ACME. If buying brand name tools a full set up could easily run you $1000.00+. How many garage type home machine shops have that kind of cash laying around.

    • @billshiff2060
      @billshiff2060 11 месяцев назад

      @@oh8wingman Yeah, wires are better than nothing for home gamers but you have to be aware of the shortcomings. It's always presented as a viable and valid alternative and it is not. They are intended for inspecting precision gauges with very accurate thread forms. That is why serious professional wires have to be and are made to gauge block tolerances. Van Keuren wires go for $100-$200 for 3 wires, per size, ~ $2000 for a set of 16 sizes. That compares well with thread micrometers.
      Those cheesy 16 sizes per set for $18 are not up to snuff. You can get away with it if you stay away from the limits of the tolerance AND you know what to look for aside from the measurement itself. Then again you can do almost as well with the old cut and try method if you are careful and know what you are doing but there is a hell of a lot to know.EX: I can see the thread shown here is out of spec regardless of the wire measurement.
