I bought the LP in the 60s. Three conductors seemed so cool!

I recall long ago a PBS broadcast of the complete Ives 4th conducted by Stokowski which was preceded by a brief interview with Stokowski, and I vaguely remember other musicians and critics discussing the work.

I’ve seen the piece done live only once, the New York Philharmonic at one of those rug concerts where you could be wherever you wanted in the hall. I recall a couple of girls from the audience standing up leaning against the organ pipes to get the Full Effect.
    It was the 70’s!

This is a ridiculous miracle of a recording. I wonder what Messiaen thought of Ives' celestial glitter winks?!

Did we ever do a Serebrier conductor talk?
Great chat here. Love this 4th. Love the stoki craziness. Fun fun fun!

Thank you, dear David, for your great work. Just my personal opinion: Those numbers of (World)-Premieres
by Stokowski (2000 or 3000 !!!) must be total nonsense. Lenny conducted at all ca. 1000 works.
I am very interested in your expert-opinion!

I have no opinion. These are facts which you an research for yourself if you're really curious. It would be interesting!

What a range! He made recordings of Hovhaness, Rimsky, Creston, and Ives. Yikes. Plus the 19th-century highlights.
I don't know how you, Dave, feel about this, but Debussy made Welte-Mignon piano rolls of his music. These have been recorded on CD, originally by Pierian (I don't know whether the disc is still available). Idiosyncratic and fascinating. Does this fall under the heading of the series?

No, because I explicitly ruled out composers playing their own music.

Also Mahler recorded Welte-Mignon rolls of some symphony movements and Lieder. They heve een recorded, including the singing for the Lieder and I think the 4th mov. of symph. no
