TOP GEAR TOYOTA GT86 - What’s It Like To Drive? Goodwood Track Day

  • I had an opportunity last week to spend the day at Goodwood driving some Toyotas. This GT86 was the car I spent the most time in, but I also have some more videos to come from the day in other cars.
This is one of 3x GT86s that were prepared by Rogue Motorsport for Top Gear, to be their "star in a reasonably fast car".

As a gt86 owner it's really interesting to hear your perspective. I find the neutral balance is addictive, Increasing grip too much takes away from the fun on the road. All comes back to the fast car slow or slow car fast debate. I have found increasing camber helps it not feel like it's rolling over on itself

With regards to the TC, I think on 86's there is a procedure known as the "pedal shuffle, or pedal dance" to fully turn it off. Some combination of pressing pedals, switching ignition positions and pressing buttons.

Now then Dan! Enjoyed that, thanks. I love Goodwood and some of the best laps I ever did in my E30M3 track car were there. I loved how late you can brake for the right after the pit straight and the way the whole track flows is just epic. I did a couple of sprint events which were really well run too. Anyway, good to see a GT86 getting some love too.

This is the circuit that, effectively ended Sterling Moss' serious racing career in 63. A couple of years later an up and coming saloon car driver was seriously burned when his Ford Anglia crashed at Lavant corner and also the track where Bruce McLaren was killed testing one of his Can-Am cars on the run from Lavant to Woodcote.
During the recent 79 Members Meeting, one of the commentators suggested that the circuit would make a great BTCC venue, if the owner and the local council would allow it.

Hope someone will let you drive the GT86's replacement - GR86. Even most of the power-hungry Americans noticed an improvement in midrange torque with the increased displacement of 2.4 litres. Even with the bigger displacement engine and more airbags, it hasn't gained much in weight. Sucks that it will only be on sale for two years in the UK...

This is my local. Expensive but memorable trackdays. Trackdays are gentlemanly here, you don't get a K-Swapped EG screaming past. They run in fixed sessions like the Nurburgring GP circuit TF days so by the 3rd lap you're usually on your own once the starting pack shuffles itself into order. That crest you nearly binned it on is flat in every car in the dry, but it's with a straight steering wheel at the apex and just the let the car push wide.

    • @markythegreat
      @markythegreat 2 года назад

I'm amazed this car survived on stock pads though, I've destroyed a full set of road pads in three 15 minute sessions here, it's brutal on brakes with a 150+ mph to 50mph braking zone at the end of lavant.

Try this from GT 86 forum:
    1) warm up the engine fully.
    2) turn off the engine.
    3) the side brake needs to be released.
    4) press and hold the brake and start the engine.
    5) while holding the brake, pull the side brake and let go of the brake.
    6) press the brake 2 or more times and hold the brake.
    7) while holding the brake, release and pull the side brake 2 or more times and hold the side brake.
    8) while holding the side brake, press the brake 2 times.
    9) TC and VSC lights should turn on.
If you can't turn the TC and VSC back on by pressing the buttons, then it worked. You'll need to turn off the engine to turn TC and VSC back on

Michelin Primacy's are a good tire, used to have them all round on my car untill the shop thought they were a bit expensive and recommended Vredestein Sporttracs, never again! I'm doing my best to destroy the Vredesteins asap and switch back to Primacy's. Not for track I reckon though, I did my very first lap around the Nurburgring on Primacy's, took it really easy but the tires were overheating halfway through the second lap

I have a GT86. I quite like it as you do.
Standard pads are indeed pretty poo. My ebay Brembo specials smoke on the road tbf, no way would I track them. I have Yoko Advans, they’re ok but tbh prefer when it had Potenzas with 2mm tread left.
Coming from an EP3 the engine is the biggest let down. Its ‘OK’ but other than a low centre of gravity and the worlds easiest alternator change theres not much character to it. One thing I have been told repeatedly is if you are tracking a GT86 you absolutely need an oil cooler otherwise engine goes knock knock a lot sooner than you think. I think the car would be much improved not with more power but some shorter gear ratios. Engine has asymmetrical conrods (yes really) so your never going to get Rb20 levels of boost because the rods will fold like my nan being chinned by Tyson.
As others have said you need to do the pedal dance to fully turn everything off, think it even turns ABS off as well. For the road, pressing and holding the button is fine. Theres a couple of modes in between fully on or everything ‘off’ but the electric nannies are still wayyyy to aggressive.
I enjoyed this video, would love to see more 86 content if you ever get chance again
