I love the fact that you are so encouraging to people who have not yet started their budgeting journey. A lot of the youtubers who do budgeting, that I've seen, are very judgmental when it comes to those not on their level. You are an absolute breath of fresh air.
That is a huge compliment, thank you. I remember being in a hard spot and how hopeless and overwhelming it feels and I don't ever want to be inadvertently discouraging. It's really tough getting started. I really appreciate your comment.
I completely agree with you. She seems to be a lovely person. I also love that she talks about struggling and uses those statements to further encourage. I'm an accountant and I learned some great tips. This video is the first I've seen of hers. I'm back here now to subscribe and binge watch her videos.
I started this budgeting journey 1.5 year ago. I don't follow Dave Ramsey's plan to the letter because I live in Greece and salaries here are not that high. But at the same time sinking funds have made my life a lot easier. I don't run around every time my car insurance or a medical bill is due, the money is already there. I remember watching a budget video of yours that got me started. And I really enjoy watching your videos because you encourage people that are not on the same page as you to keep going without judging them. Something that is really refreshing.
Thank you for sharing this video. My husband and I just bought our first house and your techniques and tips will be very helpful to manage our finances. 😊
Another thing I track in the notes page is charitable contributions, it really helps at tax time. I also have a page where I track the total cost for each vacation we take
I am new to the whole budgeting thing. Love your set up! Do you have a video that shows your month end process? Would love to see how you go through the end of the month and fill out your budget page & totals.
Loved your lay out it definitely gave me a few ideas for my future one as well! My husband and I just started budgeting since we started following Dave Ramsey’s baby steps in January. I ordered the EC deluxe monthly planner today and I’m so excited for it to get here so I can have our budget all laid out clearly in front of us. We’ve been tracking everything since the beginning of the year in a plain ole spiral notebook but I just feel like this planner will make things not only easier but more visually pleasing as well which will motivate us more to keep up with it.
Thank you thank you thank you for doing this video! I am a massive procrastinator and I hate micromanaging every single tiny category. Currently using YNAB and following a couple of other popular budgeting moms but the penny to penny stuff just drives me bonkers. Your system parallels our situation perfectly. I can’t wait to use some of your ideas. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My husband and I are currently trying to pay off our debt along with our regular bills. But we also try to save a little each month for travel, and 2 other things. This is such a simplified way of having your finances all laid out, and for us it’s better to have all our bills on the monthly layout vs making a budget each month and trying to stick to that. Plus living in japan for the next few years does help I’m saving money, because traveling here isn’t expensive and there are a lot of things that are free or museums are cheap.
I set up automatic transfers to savings for 2020 during this video 🙌🏻 thanks for that reminder of saving for sinking funds. We've never done that before.
You were one of the very first budget planning guru's I watched before starting our budget journey. My husband wasn't 100% with me on it, but over the past year, he's coming around. I love (or am addicted to) sinking funds!! Wish I had known about them years ago. Thanks for the awesome tutorials. You're my favorite! :o)
I’m so glad I found you! I absolutely love this! You have solved my budget planning/binder dilemma. I’ve tried a couple of other things and they just weren’t working for me so off to EC to order this planner. Can’t wait to get it and set it up just like this. Thank you so much 🙏
Omg your video is so inspiring and you understand that sometimes we just dont make enough to put a bit on the side. But when we can we should do it. So inspired and motivated
I wasn’t going to do anything with that monthly dashboard page, but I love how you set yours up so I might have to change my mind about that. Thanks for sharing. Your budget book set up is one of my favorite videos of the year!
I use the boxes to track when things go on sale, so now I know when to buy more expensive items. For example, Costco has Berkinstocks in July and storage for my classroom is best to buy after the new year.
I absolutely love your videos I enjoy how you organize things! It’s really helping me Keep making your videos! I love planner videos but I need functional and your channel is wonderfully refreshing for that!
My EC Deluxe Monthly Binder is arriving tomorrow! You gave me some great ideas for organizing it. Also, I’ve been using the Sinking Funds method for years but never had a name for it! 👍 Just re-watched your video for final tips! 😁 VERY HELPFUL!
Love how you set up the sinking funds....I am starting Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University in Feb. at my church and from what I read it looks like you have set up what I will eventually need. Thanks!
Hello Jen, I’ve been watching your vlogs for a few months and had to comment. I ❤️ your idea of different colored labels on you monthly spread especially the extra payment labels (blue). I also ❤️ you mortgage extra payment page set-up.
After seeing your IG post with the productivity pages for the budget planner I got all inspired to try something new for my budgeting/spending tracking this year. I ordered the softbound life planner in vertical so that I can combine the budget with a sort of check registry that is portable. The deluxe monthly was never quite structured enough for me.
This has been been very informative. My husband and I are going to be starting a budget this year. Fortunately, we're not really big spenders, but we do like nice vacations and have hobbies that need funding, not to mention other costs that just come up in the course of living. LOL. We're saving for a house and would like to put down a big down payment, so we're budgeting. It is a bit overwhelming, though, because I'm really not good at "thinking ahead," and breaking things down. I'll get there. I'll be using your video as a guide. Thank you for sharing. Wishing you and your family a Happy & Healthy New Year!
My Husband and I are looking at paying our Mortgage down the same way and I love the way you have set up the extra mortgage payment page... I am off to set my page up the same way. Thank you for sharing.
I've been waiting for this video, along with many others on the JenPlans budgeting FB group! This is one of my favorite videos every year. I watch it several times before I start to set up my budget planner, to let it all sink in, and to figure out what I need to do differently. THANK YOU for this -- it's so helpful and inspirational. This year, I'm using a combo of YNAB and the Deluxe Monthly. I need to write things down to stay on track.
You are so sweet, thank you. I had to spend more time than usual this year really thinking about what worked and what didn't. I've been thinking about YNAB too! Trying to get over the intimidation of the initial learning curve ;)
@@JenPlans I want to also give you a HUGE thank you for these tutorials. I found you a little over one year ago and ended up purchasing my first deluxe monthly planner and use it the same way you have shown. I LOVE it! Also, regarding YNAB - I completely understand feeling intimidated - it is not a very intuitive program. BUT- it is an AMAZING program and I promise, promise, PROMISE you that if you look up Nick True here on RUclips and follow his tutorials you will be up and running in no time at all. Seriously, YNAB should put him on their payroll. lol Please do yourself a favor and just try it out and follow his tutorials to learn how to use the software. YNAB gives you something like 34 days to try it out so that you can see how things look when you move from one month into another. Anyway, I just wanted to encourage you to check it out - it will save you SO much time just by tracking your sinking funds for you and you also won't need to carry cash in envelopes anymore because you can categorize everything and see how much you have in each category. Even your husband can use it and the app will show the balance to each of you in real-time as long as you enter purchases immediately. Anyway, I could go on and on but I'll stop now. lol Just do it! : )
JenPlans YNAB is awesome. They offer workshops that are about 20 minutes each, and they have them at all different times of the day. They’re free and you don’t even have to use YNAB to take them if you want to check those out first to get an idea of how it works before you even sign up for a trial. What a GREAT video!!! Thank you so much! You have completely motivated me and I just submitted my request to join your FB budgeting group. Thanks again!
Tips on someone starting who is realizing they are behind on certain bills? Would you buy a deluxe monthly now knowing they are coming out with a new one in a month or 2?
I loved this video. Thank you for posting it! A question. Do you track daily spends - for example: groceries, random household purchases, eating out etc. If so, do you have monthly budgets for those and do you track them in your planner? I’m starting my third year budget planning in a duluxe monthly and I love it.
In the past I think she did track that on the page where she has her list of bills. That's where I do it and I learned it from Jen. I track the total for Groceries, Gas, Dining Out, and Savings weekly.
Love this system and this planner layout looks to be just perfect for that purpose. Is this a new layout of the Deluxe Planner? I did have one from a previous year but the beginning pages of each month were different - Love this one and hesitate to buy it again after seeing this video
So i discovered you today and feel so fortunate. watched both sinking funds videos. it totally makes sense i love it. so this might seem like a ridiculous question, and maybe i missed the video, but where or do you track set expenses? i know you code your calendar and it's on the note pages at the beginning of each month but lets take groceries. so you take cash out on saturday but was there a page that you set up to help you know what you should/could spend at the grocery store. now, i realize you are not a financial planner, but rather showing us erin condren. i was just wondering how you budget groceries, specifically. it seems like most tracking is for sinking funds. maybe i just need to print off the dave ramsey worksheets. just wondering if you planned budget in an erin condren. like how you worked out your spending cash and where you track your hair appointments and all. i guess what i'm trying to say is: do you track fixed expenses? my problem in the past is that my fixed expenses go up or change and then the main budget needs adjusting. sorry to ramble on.
I love your setup. Paying a 13th month on your motgage will benefit you a whole lot more than extras per month, something to do with interest and reducing the amount of years left to pay. Just save the extra in a sinking funds and make a full month payment. Check it out. Nice video, just what I was searching for.
I have used an excel spreadsheet since college 20 years ago, but I love how you use this planner for finances! My main question is how do you track groceries other cash type purchases?
Do you have a cap on sinking funds? For example, your car maintenance. Do you stop when you get to X amount and start back whenever you have to use some? Or do you just continue to add always?
Organized with Olivia it looked like she’s getting cash out weekly for groceries & dining out. And all other spending is saved into sinking funds checking. 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you so much. I have been waiting for your 2020 version. Would love to see some of the quotes you use for motivation. Hard to see from this viewpoint. Thank you again for sharing. This is so helpful.
This is great, thank you for sharing! I’ve been semi-consistent with tracking a budget over the last couple of years, but intend to make this one of my top goals for 2020. This setup is going to be very helpful as I think about the best system for me. Quick question - I see that you are tracking monthly sinking funds and bills, but does this also include other monthly expenses such as groceries or gas? Where and how do you track these expenses? Apologies if I missed this in this video!
No apologies needed! You didn't miss it! I use cash for groceries and dining out so those come out on Saturdays in that cash withdrawal. Gas I note on my bills page after I've spent it!
Thank you so much for this video! I follow you on Instagram and was so happy to learn you film videos as well. Your budgeting videos are inspiring and so helpful (I’ve watched most of them now! 😆) and I’m trying to start organizing my finances better this year - starting with sinking funds! I had a question about cash envelopes if you wouldn’t mind answering. I do many of my purchases online, and I’m just wondering how you reconcile that with the cash envelope system. Do you take the cash out of the relevant envelope and then put it towards the following week/month? I’m wondering if I should try an app that has a digital envelope system or if cash is better because it is tangible. Thank you!
Just curious what made you select analog over digital for financial planning? Wouldn’t an Excel workbook be less work in manual calculations, because formulas do the math for you?
I love how you do your sinking funds. Definitely going to use that tip! So glad I found your channel! For your sinking fund account, do you have a debit card you use when needed for certain funds or is it strictly cash/autodraft?
I'm not sure how Jen does it, but for me, I spend the amount from my main checking and then transfer that amount from my sinking funds acct. Then I mark how much I've taken in the tracking sheets before that month so that I account for it. :)
This is satisfying but truly curious why do budget every single saving? Like, kids clothes VS your clothes. Why not just a big savings for all things you might need? So if you need more money for kids clothes that you didn’t save wouldn’t you just use any extra you had for something else? What is the benefit to doing such specific planning?
I love the fact that you are so encouraging to people who have not yet started their budgeting journey. A lot of the youtubers who do budgeting, that I've seen, are very judgmental when it comes to those not on their level. You are an absolute breath of fresh air.

On the monthly flow where do you show the periodic expenses car registration etc
Hi I am new to your channel I really loved this video.
Are you using cash envelopes for daily expenses and dining out, etc?
Do you have a favorite sticker paper you like to use for your stickers? I got a Cameo 4 for Christmas and am looking to make my own budget stickers.
I love Avery but they can be pricey, so I usually order from onlinelabels!
@@JenPlans Thank you!
I ❤️ your handwriting
This is satisfying but truly curious why do budget every single saving? Like, kids clothes VS your clothes. Why not just a big savings for all things you might need? So if you need more money for kids clothes that you didn’t save wouldn’t you just use any extra you had for something else? What is the benefit to doing such specific planning?
