  • When Dan McNulty told me he hated a particular news transition, I knew instantly he meant the "Dip to White" - or "Fade to Color." It's that flash effect cable news organizations use to splice between soundbites. Our full conversation on the ADHDan Podcast: • ADHDan Podcast 2.7 // ...

I’ve worked in news in the UK, this is 100% the case, it is to make any cuts 100 percent obvious, where I used to work it was more of a dip to light grey, to be on the safe side in terms of epilepsy/photosensitivity. but it is about being honest and transparent with the viewer, people are very acclimatised to jump cuts particularly now with digital content becoming more popular, so it’s about being completely upfront with the viewer that we’ve made a cut here to make this more digestible.

I don't think the media in this country have thought about "ethics" in a really, _really_ long time. But I hear what you're saying.

As your friendly RUclipsr/journalist/filmmaker, I'd like to say-
I understand why people view news media cynically-there are of course valid criticisms about the way news organizations operate, and also MANY politicians who benefit through vilifying journalism.
But "the media" is not some diabolical hivemind. It's made up of the same kind of humans that do any profession. Just like bartenders, police officers, or teachers-hundreds of thousands of humans work in news: experienced and inexperienced, talented and untalented, ethical and corrupt-with wildly different opinions, biases, backgrounds, making their own editorial choices.
It all adds up to some poor judgement, some excellent reporting, as well as these ugly "Dip to White" transitions. But I encourage people to resist knee-jerk cynicism towards "the media" as a whole, and recognize the messy, vast continuum of real people who are responsible for the reporting you consume, rely on, hate-read, use to justify a worldview, or whatever value you personally ascribe to news.

Yeah, this is kinda always what I thought it was. Show the audience where the cuts are and make them obvious so as not to be misleading. :)

What's weird to me though, is that they'll go to great visual lengths to call out cuts in a short, highly edited news segment-but then there are DEFINITELY many, many cuts in a 10-minute, 4-camera news interview-hidden by all their lovely cutaway options. (It's like, in one case, we expect you to be only half paying attention. In the second instance, we expect you to be fully engaged!)

@@GriffinHammond very true! I hadn't really considered that. Now I'm imagining a full 10 minute interview where every cut, even to the reporters reaction has a fade to white transition. It'd be nauseating. Lol

@@GriffinHammond haha so true. It's like multi-cam we assume it's real time because there is nothing out of the ordinary happening. But when we see a jump cut the editor is trying to trick us.
It feels like a similar PR problem Apple is having with AirTags. People get notified that one is following them and then find out someone put it on them... so now Apple AirTags are bad. But if they had NOT put in that feature (like many other tracking devices for years) people would still use them in nefarious ways without detection and nobody would have batted an eye. The one people don't notice has way more potential to be misleading and hiding things. Moral of the story: humans are often weird and illogical.

you'd need at least 3 high contrasts changes per second to be a serious issue. a dip to white is a dip to white is a dimmed white in a screen you have full control of, much less the "lense flare" and other effects used on broadcaster curtains. People with epilepsy history probably have also modified their screen settings preemptively. not every flash is the same.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! An ethical concern in news... yeah not in at least the last 25 years my friend.

Ethics definitely are the least of concern by most of the traditional media.
All the reporters waking up to this and trying to do independent journalism is an obvious sign of this.
Ethics in media never existed universally granted those that have an ethical moral outlook of the world do exist in the business.
Local news has traditionally held to an ethical standard but being acquired by bigger agencies has made that market shaky.
Mass media has been a political tool at least since the innovation of the printing press 🥸.

    Theory
    One is lying to you
Let’s smack one in the face
The smack distracts from the fact of the lie
Begin the next lie or creative retelling
    One forgets about the smack
By the time this process is rinsed and repeated one has a range of emotions and is convinced one’s existence is dictated by bobbling heads in distant places claiming seats of power.
Lies outlined with an optical illusion to indicate truth while continually being bombarded with exaggerations, false truths and lies builds trust 🤔.
That may be what they sell some who have worked in such positions but many do not fall for such things. (Unfortunately not enough can discern they are trained to interpret such things)
